They were <strong>to</strong> inspire <strong>the</strong>m instead with holy<br />

thoughts, and instill in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> fear of injuring <strong>the</strong>se<br />

men or hindering <strong>the</strong>ir preaching. The heavenly spirits<br />

obeyed, and <strong>the</strong>y fulfilled <strong>the</strong>ir mission so well, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> venerable Gamaliel delivered himself of <strong>the</strong> opinion<br />

recorded by saint Luke (Act 5, 34). For when <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

judges were thrown in<strong>to</strong> consternation at <strong>the</strong> news, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Apostles, whom <strong>the</strong>y had cast in<strong>to</strong> prison, were freely<br />

preaching in <strong>the</strong> temple without its being known through<br />

whom and how <strong>the</strong>y had been freed from <strong>the</strong> prison,<br />

Gamaliel counseled <strong>the</strong> priests not <strong>to</strong> trouble <strong>the</strong>se men,<br />
