self-control, and the sweet joy of the consciousness of
duty well done - done with the best motive and the
purest intention.
We read in the Book of Proverbs (xvi. 3a): "The
patient man i better than the valiant; and he that ruleth
his spirit thf he that tahth cities.'' Perfect selfmastery
is the grand achievement of the humble follower
of Christ.
" Peace is what all desire," we read in the " Imitation,"
"but all care not-for those things which appertain to
true peace. My peace is with the humble and meek of
heart. Thy peace shall be in m u patience. He who
knows how to sutfer will enjoy much peace. Such a one
is a conqueror of himself and lord of the world, a friend
of Christ and an heir of heiven." The majestic power
of selfcontrol keeps the heart quiet in danger, calm in
trial, and undisturbed in suffering. Much more, however,
does our peace depend upon our trust in God,
submission to His holy will, and perfect confidence in
His providence. "Blessed be the Lord, my God,"
sings the Royal Psalmist, " my mercy and my refuge:
my support and my deliverer: my protector; and I have
hoped in him" (Ps. cxliii. I, 2). "He that dwelleth in
the aid of the most High shall abide under the protec-
tion of-the God of Jacob: my God, in Him will I trust.
He will overshadow thee with His shoulders; and
under His wings thou shalt trust. . . . He hath given
His angels charge over thee: to keep thee in all thy
ways. In their hands they shall bear thee up; lest
thou dash thy foot against astone" (Ps. xc. I, 4, II,IZ)
The "Imitation" says:
AKE no great account who is for thee or against
thee, but let it be thy business and thy care that
