heavier clwhing above it; and perhaps that is the &&
way for a man, to veil his eutrapelio under a serious
exterior. But for a boy the other way about is the
better fashion; he should be playful and mirthful to
the eye, but have seriousness and earnestness underneath,
known only to thw who know him well. In the
earliest days of the Society of Jesus, there was a novice
mu& given to laughing. One day he met Father
Ignatius, and thought that he was in for a scdding.
laugh and be joyfui in the Lord, A Religious has no
that you may always be glad and joyful, be humble
always and alwaysobedient." - FR. JOSEPE RICKABY,
subsumed: "O! I don't mean universally and
in eveJy individual case. But your religion- you
kndW your attitude, your temper, is severe and forbidding
and all that."
This saying seems typical. The days have gone by
when Protestants believed that Catholic priests had
horns and cloven feet; but the days will hardly come
when Protestants will give up their notion that Catholicism
and gloom art! synonymous, and that the outward
badge of our religion is an abiding frown. Stripping
the idea of all that is exaggerated in it, it does us honor,
perhaps more honor than Catholics individdally can
