"My soul is sorrowful even unto death," He said to His
disciples, whom He asked to watch with Him. Fear,
sadness, and a loathing for the sins of which He is the
innocent Victim, and of the horrible tortures and death
awaiting Him, besides the sorrow of His Heart on account
of the ingratitude of men and their insensibility to His love,
which He foresaw, have forced a sweat of blood from His
sacred veins. Exhausted with the intensity of His anguish,
He faUs prostrate on His face to the ground. In His agony .
He prays: "My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice
pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou
wilt " (Matt. xxvi. 39).
When your heart bleeds, pray as Jesus prayed to His
Father in Heaven. Fear not to say: "0 my God, remote
this chalice; it is too much, I can bear no morel" But
also add, as He did: "Nevertheless, 0 ray Father, as
Thou wilt; Thy will be done, not mine I" And by virtue
of this divine prayer your heart will be consoled, or, at
least, it will always be strengthened, as was Jesus, to
Whom an angel descended; and this angel, instead of
removing the chalice, p~esented it to His lips.
There is a blessing m the cup of bitter sorrow; there
is salvation in the chalice of suffering. Some day this mill
be revealed to us. Jesus received no sympathy, no comfdrt
from His friends, His disciples, who slept while He was
in His agony. He says by His prophet: "I looked for one
that would grieve together with Me, but there was none;
and for one that would comfort Me, and I found none''
(Ps. Ixviii. 21).
Place your confidence in the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
which has experienced every kind of human woe, and which,
loving you, is both able and willing to help and comfort
you.
Jesus suffered so intensely in the garden on account of
the vis~on He then had of the loss of so many souls, despite
His passion, and of the ingratitude with which men would
meet His love.
Oh1 let us, then, repent siscerely for the past, consider-
