"God, at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke
in times past by the prophets; but in these days He
hath spoken to us through His Son. For the first
time since the fall of man, God becomes irnmediatdy
and visibly our instruttor. Smly it must interest us
to know and to hear the first words that fell from the
lips of Jesus.
"And opening His mouth, He taught them, sllling:

I. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theics is the
kingdom of heaven;

2. Blessed are the meek: for they shall mxses
the land ;
"'3. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall
be comforted;
"'4. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after
justice: for they shall have their fill;
'"5. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain
mercy;
"'6. Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall
see God ;
"'7. Blessed are the peacemakers: for hey shall
be called the children of God;
"'8. Blessed are they that s&er persecution for
justice' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.'
"These words teach me the manna and deport-
ment of Jesus. You will not b y it. Were you to
find that page in a desert, you would say that the man
who spoke it was gentle and modest in mannet and
mien, that be was mild, affable, and affectionate ia
