The Imddion of Ch* 189<br />

is that He possessed <strong>the</strong> charms of modesty and meekness<br />

'Learn of Me,' He says, 'that I am meek and<br />

humble of heart I'<br />

"' Thou art beautiful,' says <strong>the</strong> Psalmist, 'above<br />

<strong>the</strong> sons of men; grace is poured abroad in thy tipswith<br />

thy comdiness and thy beauty, set out, proceed<br />

prosperously, and reign.' How lovely must He have<br />

been when He was growing up in wisdom and age and<br />

grace -which was manifest not only to God, but also<br />

to men. When all that heard Him in <strong>the</strong> Temple<br />

were astonished at His wisdom and at His answers,<br />

and when as He read in <strong>the</strong> synagogue all wondered<br />

at <strong>the</strong> words of grace that proceeded from His mouth.<br />

Why did Bis simple words produce this impression?<br />

"Because with <strong>the</strong> latent power of divine gram, <strong>the</strong><br />

'goodness and kindness of God our Saviour hath<br />

appeared to all men, instructing us.' His h&ed of<br />

sin did not make Him gloomy and melancholy, nor<br />

did his zeal for justice make Him hasty and disagreeable.<br />

The Prophet said of Him that He would not be sad<br />

nor troublesome - all His senses are under control4<br />

and <strong>the</strong> placid mitraint which is upon His whole<br />

manner and person is <strong>the</strong> reflection of <strong>the</strong> calm and<br />

peace and order that reign within. 'He shall not cry<br />

aloud, nor shall His voice be heard abroad - <strong>the</strong> bruised<br />

reed He shall not bred, and smoking flax He shall not<br />

quench.'<br />

"If w hod only <strong>the</strong> fn-st ten venes of <strong>the</strong> fifth chapter<br />

of St. Mat<strong>the</strong>w left, out of <strong>the</strong> whole body of<br />

revelation, thy would suffice to make known to us<br />

<strong>the</strong> modest deportment, <strong>the</strong> blessed character, <strong>the</strong><br />

divine conversation of Jesus amongst men.<br />

"When we wish to know <strong>the</strong> characteristic manner,<br />
