say: We wish to love ehrist; we do love 11M in a
way -and yet we are so far off. Yes - becaw you
do not love Him with a whole heart; your heart is
divided; and other things come between you and Him,
and keep you apart from Him. There is a sense in
which they who love Christ must lwe nothing else but
Christ, though in a sense also the love of Christ makes
us love aH things better.
"It is of the nature of human love that it is both
exclusive and inclusive. Loving one truly leads you
to love all; and yet in every true love there is an element
of exclusiveness which gives the relationship it creates
its special character. So in our love of Christ - in its
properties it implies a high exclusiveness from all eels;
a surrender of self which can be made to Him alone.
And if any interest or creature tends to break down
that exclusiveness, to claim an equal share with Him,
to set us apart from Him, then it must go. He must be
loved for Himself in the highest degree - all else only
as it leads up to Him, or is related to Him.
"It is, then, when the soul is guided by faith and be,
that it comes to that true union with Christ which is
the perfect Christian life, and which St. Paul sums up
in words: 'I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.'"

HIS hidden life at Nazareth we have to learn from
r our divine Master the great lesson of obedience, the
love of obscurity, the love nf humility, the love of poverty
(the spirit of poverty, detachment from creatures),
and the love of Iabor.
In His public life and in His passion we must dlao
consider Jesus Christ as our model and !earn from Him
the lessons He inculcates both by word and example,
