ANY men of literary taste, and many professional
m writers, haql the practiceof gathering the justest
and most striking thoughts they meet with in the cmrse
of their reading, they thus form a repertory which
grows richer day by day, and becomes in the end an
invaluable treasupe. Here is an excellent device which
we ought to make use of in the spiritual life. We read
the Gospel, the writings of the saints, certain ascetic
works; let us faithfully note down the thoughts which
make the most impression upon us, and even the personal
reflections which these thoughts suggest to w. In
a few years we shall possess a collection more precious
than all our books of piety, and one which we may read
again and again with great profit, especially in moments
of e m i and sadness. Each phrase of our little notebook
will become like a rby of light to dissipate the darkness
of our soul, or a drop of balm to calm our sorrows.

ET US often read the "Lives of the Saints," specially
those inner lives in which the details are given in
abundance. There we shall learn how we ou ht to
behave toward God, toward others, and tows$ ourselves,
in order to possess true happiness. Nothing
is more instructive or more profitable as regards piety
and even as regards our temporal interests, properly
understood, than the attentive and meditative reading
of the "Lives of the Saints." - Zbid.
