The range of activities provided by youth work associati<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s varies from<br />

country to country and depends <strong>on</strong> different nati<strong>on</strong>al youth work traditi<strong>on</strong>s. But the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

overview shows that even <strong>in</strong> European countries where it traditi<strong>on</strong>ally has a more marg<strong>in</strong>al<br />

positi<strong>on</strong>, youth work provides a broad spectrum of activities. It takes place <strong>in</strong> a wide and<br />

varied sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g recreati<strong>on</strong>al activities, sports, extracurricular educati<strong>on</strong>, youth<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>, counsell<strong>in</strong>g and participati<strong>on</strong> as well as career services, educati<strong>on</strong> and pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

support for youngsters at risk.<br />

youth work listed below were identified as those categories that are most appropriate to map<br />

the range of youth work provided <strong>in</strong> all European countries participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this study. The list<br />

should be understood as an <strong>in</strong>itial systematisati<strong>on</strong> attempt. It is not <strong>in</strong>tended as a def<strong>in</strong>itive<br />

list, and could be expanded by add<strong>in</strong>g new spheres of activity.<br />

The organisers of extracurricular youth educati<strong>on</strong> offer basic services relat<strong>in</strong>g to general,<br />

political, social, health-oriented, cultural, ecological and technical out-of-school educati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

n<strong>on</strong>-formal or <strong>in</strong>formal character. They offer experiential educati<strong>on</strong> programmes, or a<br />

targeted emphasis <strong>on</strong> group sessi<strong>on</strong>s, projects and events. A large number of programmes<br />

and services <strong>in</strong> extracurricular youth educati<strong>on</strong> also c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> aspects of primary preventi<strong>on</strong> -<br />

by exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e's own life, by expos<strong>in</strong>g young people to experiences of enjoyment, fun,<br />
