In Austria the percentage of volunteers active <strong>in</strong> the field of youth work lies at 88% <strong>on</strong>ly 12%<br />

are paid youth workers. In Germany 97% of the youth workers were identified as volunteers.<br />

In Greece 52% of the youth workers are employees and 48% are volunteers. Volunteers<br />

engagement is high <strong>in</strong> youth associati<strong>on</strong>s but also <strong>in</strong> youth counsell<strong>in</strong>g and youth recreati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In the Netherlands an Spa<strong>in</strong> the percentage of volunteers <strong>in</strong>volved at local level is obviously<br />

higher. In the Netherlands 92% of the youth workers are volunteers. This has to be seen<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the background that sports is the ma<strong>in</strong> youth work activity <strong>in</strong> some of the surveyed<br />

municipalities. In Spa<strong>in</strong> 75% of the youth workers at local level were identified as volunteers.<br />

They are active <strong>in</strong> the associati<strong>on</strong>s and participate <strong>in</strong> cultural, extracurricular and leisure<br />

activities. For Norway the number of volunteers is not traceable.<br />

In Austria there 60% female and 40% male youth workers. While <strong>in</strong> Greece the number of<br />

female and male employed youth workers is balanced, <strong>in</strong> the Netherlands and Spa<strong>in</strong> we<br />

have about 10% more female youth workers. In Romania youth work is above all a female<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>. The rati<strong>on</strong> between female and male employed youth workers is 3/1. In Norway<br />

the highest percentage of female youth workers with 88% has been found.<br />

In all countries – with the excepti<strong>on</strong> of the Netherlands and Germany, where many youth<br />

workers have temporary employment - most youth workers are full-time employees. In<br />
