20 MARCH 2015 No. 8
Dear Parents
Last week we competed at the AIC swimming
championships. This was the first carnival under the
new expanded AIC format due to the demise of the CIC
competition. Congratulations particularly go to the Year
5 and 6 boys who won the junior division and also to
the secondary boys who came third behind St Peters
College and Marist College, Ashgrove. Many of the
boys swam personal bests which is a credit to their
commitment and to the coaching of Mr Brian Glass.
Currently Year 6 are away on camp at Glendalough.
The boys go in two groups, half the year from Monday
to Wednesday and the remainder from Wednesday to
Friday. Reports in from Glendalough suggest all are
having a great time.
I have just signed a contract to install a roof over the
basketball court behind Oblate Hall. This will provide
welcome relief from the sun and rain for our boys. The
project should be completed midway through next term.
AIC Swim Captains, Hayden Wasiak (Year 6),
Lachlan Carter (Year 12) and Kai Thomas
(Year 6) with the AIC Years 5 and 6 Aggregate
Shield and the AIC Year 5 Aggregate Trophy.
Last year, many of our community took part in a major parent survey. This survey sought your
opinion and thoughts in terms of Iona’s performance in key areas. Fr Mark reported the results of
this survey through the newsletter last year. Of interest is that parents registered a satisfaction
rating above 80% in all areas and in most above 85%. Although we appreciate that these are
excellent results St Eugene would still, no doubt, be demanding that we work even harder, with
passion and zeal, in our endeavours. One of the areas in which we continue to work is in the
professional growth of our teachers.
Iona College’s teacher professional development program emphasises the creation of a collaborative
culture, improving teacher quality, and the development of highly effective teaching practices. The
consequence of this is the promotion of learning and growth for all students. Through professional
growth teams (PGTs) teachers are provided with the framework to observe each other and provide
constructive and meaningful feedback around performance.
Each PGT is guided by a team leader who is responsible for facilitating meetings and discussions.
Teams meet once per fortnight with discussion centred on effective teaching with reference to the
Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) National Professional Standards
for Teachers and current trends in international teaching practice. Teachers are also provided with
time to observe a colleague once per
fortnight, which provides opportunities for
staff to reflect on and strengthen their
own practice.
‘Lifelong Formation”
All teachers at Iona participate in this
program. There are consistent links
showing that teacher development is
inextricably associated with school
development and is an essential part of
school improvement. Our teachers
engage in this professional learning
because they are committed to continual
improvement, no matter how proficient
we may be, and know that this ultimately
leads to better learners and improved
student outcomes.
Best wishes for a great week ahead.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
I wrote a few weeks ago about some of the wonderful openings
available to our boys throughout the year by way of programs, field trips
and the like. The Habits of Mind are a great way to see the benefit in
these opportunities. Students are encouraged to ask questions and
pose problems, they have the chance to imagine, innovate and create,
they may apply past knowledge and more than likely will respond at
times with a degree of wonderment and awe. These opportunities are
also typified by the students’ commitment to remain open to continuous
learning whilst gathering information through a range of senses (i.e.
touch, sight, sound).
For the first time in 2015, Year 9 students have been able to choose the
Science Enrichment elective in order to further their interests and
knowledge in the numerous areas of Science. Please see below some
information relating to two opportunities our Year 9 Science Enrichment
students have undertaken over the past few weeks.
Mr John Christie
Acting Dean of Studies
SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
SCIENCE ENRICHMENT – ASTROPHYSICS
Science Enrichment is an elective subject offered to Year 9 students
who have a passion and interest in science. This term the students
have been studying Astrophysics, developing a better understanding of
our universe focusing on cosmology and rocket science.
T o s u p p o r t t h e
curriculum students and
their parents were
invited to an astronomy
night. Once the sun
went down, students
and their parents
assembled on Davine
Oval to observe the
beauty of space through
four large telescopes.
Members from the Brisbane Astronomical Society shared their
equipment and knowledge to all present about the night sky. Our
Moon, the beginning of a star within a Nebula, and Jupiter and its four
moons were all observed. With such a wealth of knowledge within the
group it was a great learning experience.
Students also attended an Astrophysics workshop held at the Gardens
Point campus of Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This
workshop is part of the STEM program (Science Technology
Engineering and Maths) which aims to increase students’ awareness
through a hands-on experience in a university environment. During the
workshop students were able to look at the possibility of discovering
new exoplanets in a habitable zone. Students used software to build
their own solar system with creative but realistic characteristics of a
new planet.
COMMUNITY NEWS
VANUATU APPEAL
Following the devastation that Cyclone Pam has left in Vanuatu, Iona is
going to run a one week appeal for goods and tinned food which are so
badly needed by families in that country. Mrs Claire Jackson, our new
teacher-librarian this year, lived and taught in Port Vila for the past six
years and she is very aware of many families now struggling to
overcome the destruction.
Below is a letter that Mrs Jackson has drafted and I offer it to you for
special consideration.
As we are all aware, Cyclone Pam has left the island nation of our
close Pacific neighbour Vanuatu, decimated. Vanuatu is a place
very dear to our family, as it was our home for over six years from
2007–2014. There are other families in our school who have also
called Vanuatu home. We are all still close friends with many local ni
-Vanuatu people who we know have lost everything in this disaster.
Many others may have visited this paradise, whether on a cruise
ship for a day or for a more extended stay and experienced the
warmth, humour and hospitality of the people.
Any help or support will be vital to the reconstruction of this nation.
Below is a list of goods which can be left in the Resource Centre up
until Wednesday March 25. Alternatively, if you prefer to donate
money to our collection in the Library, this will be sent through to the
agencies on the ground in Vanuatu. Every candle, torch or dollar will
make a difference.
Thanks in advance for your support.
KID’S LITERATURE QUIZ AUSTRALIA
On Friday March 6, four Year 7 boys represented Iona at the annual
Queensland heat of the Australian Kid’s Literature Quiz. The Kid’s Lit
Quiz encourages students to extend their reading and covers diverse
topics from “all things literature” - authors, titles, characters and plot
events. It relies on the winning team having a broad and wide-ranging
book knowledge. This International event culminates in a final
competition in a different country every year and this year the final will
be held in Connecticut, USA.
Although our boys are not off to
the final this year, they
competed admirably and were
proud representatives of Iona.
We look forward to participating
again next year. Well done Eli
Fowler-Roy, Floyd Stevenson,
Joshua Smith and Rory
Andersen.
ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO READ
Have you asked your son recently what book he is reading? It’s worth
noting that Year 5 – 10 students borrow regularly from our collections
and engage in a range of reading activities, including bookchats, and
silent sustained reading within their classrooms and in borrowing
sessions in the Resource Centre. Reading is an integral part of the
boys’ education at Iona and facilitates effective research as well as
lifelong learning. Reading both fiction and non fiction broadens
students horizons and general knowledge, exposing them to situations
that they will possibly never experience in real life.
Students do not have to wait for a class visit to the Resource Centre to
borrow from the collections. We are open from 8.00 am - 4.30 pm
everyday including breaks and they are able to borrow as often as they
like. We have a wide collection, including ebooks and audiobooks.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
We are planning our first Recital Series 1 concert for week two of Term
2. On Wednesday 29 April we will incorporate our Solos and Small
Groups. For those new families to the College these concerts are held
in our Lecture Theatre from 6.30 pm and offer our students the
opportunity of performing a solo or small group piece in an intimate
setting. Our music supporters group provide drinks in the foyer from
5.30 pm, and invite all families to come along and bring a plate to enjoy
before the concert. The application forms are now available in the
music department for all interested students.
We are pleased to welcome Mr John Varney who will teach Double
Bass and Bass Guitar every Friday. Mr Varney has come to us with a
wealth of knowledge and experience having been a lecturer in music at
the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, along with performing with
the Western Australian and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.
DRAMA DEPARTMENT
YEARS 5 AND 6 DRAMA CLUB
"The future belongs to young people with an education and the
imagination to create." President Barack Obama
There’s been barrels of creativity, clowning, games and lots of
laughter at the weekly Drama Club for the Years 5 and 6 boys.
Tomorrow will be the last meeting for this term as the senior students
running the sessions will be on exam block in week nine. The club will
recommence in week two of Term 2. I thank the session leaders:
Jaycob Beven-Delaney, Rory Hawkins and Paul Henry-Cornish.
Students who have not
previously attended but
who would like to do so,
are still most welcome to
come along. The boys can
attend all sessions or just
come along when they
can. Overall, the Drama
Club focuses on having
fun while developing
important communication
and inter-personal skills.
The ultimate question is:
‘Will one of these ‘clowns’ be a future leader?’
BUSINESS OR COMMERCE DEGREE - WHAT’S THE
DIFFERENCE?
Institutions can differ in what they call their business/commerce
degrees. For example, the Queensland University of Technology
includes all of its business/commerce specialisations/majors in its B
Business. Griffith University and the University of Queensland offer both
B Business/B Business Management and B Commerce with different
specialisations/majors in each degree. When researching business/
commerce degrees, it is important to identify the specialisations or
majors offered as this may influence the types of jobs you can apply for
immediately after you graduate.
According to Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand (CA)
‘business’ focuses on how individual organisations operate, while
‘commerce’ focuses more on the wider commercial and economic
environment. You can explore this topic further on the CA website at
http://www.charteredaccountants.com.au/Students/News-and-updates/
High-school/Business-or-commerce-degree.aspx.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CERTIFICATE,
A DIPLOMA AND A DEGREE?
In Australia we have a national system of qualifications called the
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). At the end of Year 12, you
can apply for the following qualifications from the Framework. These
qualifications can differ in length, content and competitiveness as shown
below.
Bachelor Degree: Usually 3-5 years full-time (or part-time equivalent);
theoretical; entry is usually competitive.
Associate degree/Advanced diploma: Usually 2 years full-time (or part
-time equivalent); combination of theory and practice; range from not
competitive to very competitive depending on the topic.
Diploma: Can be 1-2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent); tend to
be practical with some theory; range from not competitive to very
competitive depending on the topic.
Certificates I, II, III, IV: 1 month - 1 year full-time; usually very
practical; usually not competitive.
The different levels of qualifications on the AQF are a bit like a
ladder. You can use one level to help you gain entry to a higher level of
study in the future depending on your results and the rules of the
institution you want to gain entry to. To decide on the best level of
qualification for you, consider:
The study/training requirements of the job you want
Your past study results
Whether you are a hands-on (practical) or theory person
The cost of the course
The length of time you are prepared to study.
For more information about the AQF and its qualifications, visit
http://www.aqf.edu.au/.
SPORTS INFORMATION
Summer sport comes to a conclusion this weekend with most fixtures
against Villanova – “the local derby clash”. Premierships and aggregate
positions are up for grabs in what is always a competitive round of sport.
This week’s newsletter again lists next week’s rugby / football trials. It
appears that Iona may have enough players to field thirty-three football
and thirty-six rugby teams in the winter season - a difficult task in
selecting / managing / coaching / refereeing. Players and parents are
reminded that initial selections are made for the first trial and that teams
will not be set until after further training and trials. Parents willing to
Proudly presented by the Iona College Old Boys
Iona College
Dear Fathers of Year 9 and 10 boys,
If Iona is about anything, it is about growing good boys into good men. I would like to invite you and your son/s to
attend the Growing Good Men weekend in April (17 th -19 th ). We will begin at 7.00pm on Friday at Glendalough and
finish at 2.00pm on Sunday.
The relationship between a father and his children is one of the most significant relationships that a man will ever have.
The impact that our fathers have on us and we as fathers have on our sons lasts a life time. Fatherhood really matters!
Every young man needs to hear and believe that he is good enough in his father’s eyes. Every boy wants his father to
give him a sense of male acceptance, affirmation and affection. For a boy to become a man and to gain an
understanding of masculinity he needs the guidance of good men and none more so than his father.
We all want to have a rich and rewarding relationship with our sons, and like any relationship it takes commitment,
time, and effort. We all want to give our sons guidance, wisdom and love. Fathers are instrumental in giving their sons
the gift of manhood. The Growing Good Men weekend offers fathers and their sons the time and opportunity to
discuss these issues and make plans for the way ahead. The weekend is a wonderful time to reaffirm the importance of
this core relationship. Plus it is a time to relax and have fun together with other fathers and sons.
Details of the weekend:
Date:
7.00 pm Friday 17 th April – Approx. 2.00 pm Sunday 19 th April
