Dad and I thought it would be fun to raise deer so we started in the early 2000’s. I was
22 when we started. We had an one acre pen and a few does. Our first year fawning was a good
year, we did not lose a single fawn. We thought it was so easy to raise deer! That year at the Top
30 we talked to several other deer farmers and got even more excited about raising deer. We
then went out and bought a few more does with good genetics.
When we heard of the Iowa Banquet in Cedar Rapids, we were ready to go. There we
met deer farmers like Fred Hubner, Chad and Sheila Machart, and others. We wanted a good
genetics buck to breed our does, and we heard that Chad and Sheila Machart had some really
nice bucks, so we wanted to take a look at them. This one buck caught our eye.
His sire was Avalanche and the dam was a Big Jake daughter. He was a yearling and
even though he looked really good, we didn’t buy him right then.
We went back the next year to see him again. He looked good! A few weeks later he
looked even better! I thought they wanted too much for him, but a week later I called Chad and
asked if he would consider selling half the buck to me. He said he needed to think about it, so
I called him back 2 days later and he said he would be happy to sell half the buck to me! There
were some very happy people!
My wife, Anna and I have 4 daughters: LeAnne (9), Marilyn (7), Lu Etta (6), and Mariam
Sue (3).
A cold little boy was selling newpapers from door to door. At one house a lady
thought he looked almost starved. She asked if he would like a glass of milk. She didn’t give him
just a little glass of milk, but she gave him a Big glass. Years later, she needed surgery. As it can
happen the doctor bills needed to get paid. She talked to the doctor about them. The doctor
replied that when I was selling newspapers door to door, you paid your doctor bills with that
Big glass of milk.
Kindness can collect interest without knowing. In this land of plenty to eat, kindness
can be a glass of milk, a cup of coffee or even just a smile. We may think that we have it rough
compared to some, but there is always someone else who has it worse. We all must be thankful
for what we have.
Gene’s Place
Friday
Bred Doe, 2 Years Old
The history of Gene’s place is rather short. I came down to southern Iowa in October
of 2006, bought some land, built 2 deer pens and started on a handling facility. We also AI’d 34
does in partnership with Teague Ranch and Butch Caylor. I then went back to Wisconsin and
helped out at Wilderness Whitetails until mid August 2007. At that time I moved here permanently.
Scott Kent took care of our first group of fawns. In the fall of 2007, I bought over 19 does
from the Teague Ranch most of which were Little Boomer, Poncho and 30-30 genetics. We also
added 4 of Scott’s does. We AI’d these 23 plus 43 more at Teague Ranch.
In 2008, we purchased several more does. We AI’d 25 does here and 78 more at the
Teague Ranch. In 2009, we AI’d over 150 does.
Gene’s Place had no deer in April 2007, but by July 2009 we had over 100. Between
the Teague Ranch and Gene’s Place we now have genetics from most, but not all of the bigger
bucks in the country.
Friday
It’s just me and my wife and we have a nephew helping us when we need help. He has
3 little boys ages 1,3, and 7. The two oldest boys also like to help. We had 16 fawns this year and
bottle fed them all, with my wife doing most of it.
In the year of 1992, my nephews, LaVern and Raymond Graber and I would go to
Woods & Waters Exotic Sales and bought birds, Ostrich, Rhea, and Emus. We had birds until
1995 then decided to buy some deer. We bought 4 does and 1 buck fawn from Kenny Clark. We
went to a sale at Whitehouse and bought 4 straws of Thunder semen (Eddie Ray Burkholder).
We then went to Roy D. Yoder’s farm for AI lessons and in 2000 we AI’d 4 does with success. That
is where Thunder Hy Lite comes in. We then continued to improve our herd with better genetics.
In 2001, we made a farm pond on the back of our 80 acre farm.
In 2006, we divided our does (the does were all at LaVern’s) and brought our does
home. (We still help each other though)
When I am not at deer sales or doing something with deer I like to spend my time
fishing and working back by the pond.
2011 Mid-America Invitational Whitetail Deer Auction
Bred Doe, 1 1/2 Years Old
Bred Doe, 2 Years Old
In the mid 1980s Dave & Rick Griffith purchased their grandfather’s farm from his estate. With a burning desire to
bring the old farm to life their idea to raise whitetail deer began. They formed Griffith Brothers Whitetail Ridge Trophy Deer Ranch.
Although the whitetail deer industry was in its infancy Rick and Dave st ill made genetics their main focus. After traveling the
country for a year looking at deer herds they purchased their first breeding stock. The breeder bucks came from northern
Pennsylvania out of a herd started by Bill Dyroff. Bill, a computer science teacher, impressed the Griffith Brothers with great herd
records and a reputation for raising championship sled dogs. Bill’s herd was almost 10 years developed; thus the three original
breed sires were purchased from the Dyroff farm.
The first buck was StudIy, PA Geronimo’s father, a main frame 6x6 purchased for his tine length and typical frame. The
second buck was Chief purchased for his great width and frame. The third buck was Goliath 1 purchased for his tremendous mass.
At the same time Penn State University had produced a huge typical buck known as J-44. J-44 was ahead of his time with an
impressive set of typical antlers scoring just over 200”. That was a very big deer for the 1980s. The herdsman at the time was Bob
Mothersbaugh. Bob has since retired from Penn State and is now a master breeder in the whitetail industry. Dave & Rick were very
impressed with Bob’s record keeping and knowledge of his herd at Penn State; thus several does were purchased from the J-44
line. Some of those does included ROM Goliath’s mother, Marlin’s mother, along with two full J-44 sisters K-l and 150 to name a
few. After a few years of breeding a special buck hit the ground by the name of “Geronimo”. Dave and Rick had no idea how special
this buck they had named Geronimo was going to be. Today Griffith Brothers are one of the proven leaders in the whitetail deer
industry and PA Geronimo is one of the most inheritable and popular breed sires in the country.
Located in northwest Pennsylvania we have been raising whitetails for over 20 years
on a small family run farm and hunting ranch. We were fortunate to have raised one of the
largest whitetails in 2003, RDM Goliath at 429 6/8. With his influence in our doe herd, they are
producing the big framy animals that the hunting industry is looking for. We use AI on about
half of our does, adding such bucks as Primetime, Maxbo XL, Maxbo, Maxin, Tonto, Grizzly,
Rocket, Timberjack, Highroller, Rocky, Sundance and many more. The rest are bred to our own
herd sires, several over 300 this year.
Two unique things that we do here at RDM are we bottle feed every fawn on the place
and we work the bucks with a dog during hard antler season.
does are bottle fed and extremely tame, out of the huge Powerball, sire of Big Ticket est. 240” @1. This damside is
proven, Purple 15 is the mother of Mossy Oak, 228” @2 and big framed. Climax is the sire of this years largest yearling,
Renegage, 288 @1. He will bring in Maxin and High Roller to this pedigree. X-Factor is one of the world’s largest bucks
We have a small deer farm in western PA that we started in the spring of 2007. We
bought 2 bred does. Green 176 which gave us a buck and doe fawn and Pink 17 gave us 1 buck
and 2 doe fawns. Now by the first of June we had 7 deer. We kept our deer at Hickory Hill Whitetails
as we didn’t have any fence of our own.
By the fall of 2008 we moved all the deer to our own pens. Now our buck fawn from
Geronibear and Pink 17 was 1 1/2 years old and we decided to use him for our breeder as that
was all we had. So we named him Lil Bear. He was 14 1/2” inside and scored 288”. Then a couple
of guys from Indiana, called the Dutch Boys came to our farm one day and ended up buying
him. Thanks to them and everyone who purchased deer and made it possible for us to be deer
breeders. We now have about 60 deer and really enjoy it.
Everyone is welcome to stop by or give us a call and chat deer or whatever may be on
your mind. God bless one and all!
Bred Doe, 2 Years Old
We’ve got what the industry is talking about...Large framed typical deer plus one of
our other goals...healthy whitetail deer. They both go hand in hand at BB Genetics.
We are located in Northern Indiana. We began raising whitetail deer in 2000, starting
out with one buck and 6 does we had bought from local Indiana deer farmers.
Each year there was and still is new challenges we face when it comes to raising and
treating our deer. Since I had been a hog farmer for 40 years, I knew the importance of vaccinating
livestock to produce the healthiest animals that I could, so that was a plus for our farm and
carried over to our deer.
In the first year we got with our local vet and came up with a vaccination
program for our herd. Our fawns are vaccinated and tagged within the first 12 hours of birth.
We also vaccinate our whole herd each year with the same vaccinations. We have also been vaccinating
our whole herd with the EHD Type 1 & 2 & Blue Tongue17 ever since Indiana acquired
Missouri’s vaccine.
Let’s say BB Genetics does not skimp on the cost of producing healthy deer. That
goes for the feed we mix ourselves also. They get the best of the best in nutrition and care that
anyone could give them.
We want those deer farmers who buy deer from us to have big bodied, healthy deer
when they leave our farm.
breeding #235 to BB Widowmaker. With BB Widowmaker’s long tines including 16” G2’s (no splits included here to
equal up to 16 inches) and #235 being out of BB Snaps/Bucky granddaughter, I’ll bet on this one to make great big
typicals. What you get, I will get because I am keeping her twin sister #236. If you think I’m keeping the best one, then
if you buy this doe #235 and you want to switch, then we’ll switch and we will still both have the same breeding and
both be winners on this lot.
