3. Maternity, Parental, and Adoption Leave<br />

An employee shall be entitled to maternity, parental, and adoption leave in<br />

accordance with The Labour Standards Act <strong>of</strong> Saskatchewan.<br />

4. Compassionate Leave<br />

i) Definition<br />

For the purposes <strong>of</strong> this section, immediate family (including<br />

common-law) is defined as: father, mother, brother, sister, son,<br />

daughter, including in-laws, husband, wife, grandparents,<br />

grandchildren, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, legal guardian, or ward.<br />

ii)<br />

Application<br />

Upon authorization from the employee’s immediate supervisor, an<br />

employee shall be granted compassionate leave with pay for up to<br />

five (5) consecutive working days per occasion to attend a critical<br />

illness and/or death in the immediate family. For the purpose <strong>of</strong> this<br />

section, “critical illness” shall mean an illness or circumstances that a<br />

physician deems life threatening or where a physician believes death<br />

to be imminent.<br />

Additional Leave<br />

5. Jury/Witness Duty Leave<br />

The Director <strong>of</strong> Education may grant compassionate leave in excess <strong>of</strong><br />

five (5) working days at his discretion. Such leave may be with or<br />

without pay.<br />

An employee who is absent from work as a result <strong>of</strong> being subpoenaed to be a<br />

witness in court or being required to serve on a jury shall be paid his/her normal<br />

salary while absent subject to the following conditions:<br />

i) The employee shall pay to the Board any remuneration other than<br />

expenses, which he/she receives, for such absence. With respect to the<br />

Court <strong>of</strong> Queen’s Bench, the employee, if appearing as a witness, shall<br />

make application in accordance with “The Queen’s Bench Fees<br />

Regulations” for witness fees.<br />

ii)<br />

The employee shall notify the Superintendent as soon as possible after<br />

receipt <strong>of</strong> notice for such absence.<br />
