younger years as part of an extracurricular art class.
In addition to being a creative artist, Ned is an
ARTS…
TRASH ART
Ginelle McKenzie, Instructor
Don’t throw it away! You can recycle your
trash and use it to make really cool crafts. In
this class we’ll create great projects such as
paper towel rainsticks, egg carton caterpillars,
paper maché animals, and magazine beads
and necklaces. We’ll also melt old crayons
and put them in molds to create new funcolored
ones. For inspiration we’ll read
books like Grover’s 10 Terrific Ways to Help
our Wonderful World, The Very Hungry
Caterpillar, and others about the rainforest
and animals. It’s not just about art—it’s
about saving the planet too. Ages 4-7.
Tila Ramin, Instructor
Beginning and experienced knitters alike, join
us for a summer knitting spree. We’ll work on
scarf, then you’ll choose your own projects
from a selection of fun pieces, including
stuffed animals, pillows, and more. We’ll
supply accessories so you can decorate your
you’d have done in China generations ago),
and make a range of Chinese arts and crafts
projects from origami to lanterns. Put on
your chef’s hat to create your own delectable
Chinese lunches—including dumplings,
Susan Funk, Instructor
If you love dinosaurs, get prehistoric with
us and make a fictional biography of your
favorite one. You’ll create an original
dinosaur, or borrow one of the guys who
used to live, and make a short book about
that particular dinosaur—who he/she was
and what he was like, where he lived, who
his brothers and sisters were, what pets he
owned, what school he went to, and more.
Kind of like The Flintstones—we’ll create a
whole new world for our unique dinosaurs,
tapping your artistic and creative writing
talents. Ages 4-7.
CRAZY HOUSE WEEK
Susan Funk, Instructor
Young architects, join us on a virtual tour of
the crazy houses of the world. After we view
and discuss the most insane buildings that
actually exist in the world (including upside
down homes), we’ll get to work creating
our own houses—the crazier the better. Of
course, all of the windows and doors must
open, and we’ll draw what we see behind
them. (Our instructor’s version has the ocean
in one room, and an ice cream shop with free
ice cream in another—but she’s a little crazy
herself.) At the end of the week you’ll have
a large funky neighborhood of your own
complete with backgrounds, cool lettering,
and funky stories. We will begin with “reality
ENERGY EXPLORERS
Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors
Build tons of fun projects to investigate
the wide world of energy. In the mornings,
we’ll explore alternative energy by building
solar cars that harness the power of the
sun. In the afternoons, we’ll capture wind
power by building a wind turbine. We’ll
also delve into the properties of balloon
cars, catapults, and rubber band racers in
our investigation of potential and kinetic
energy, and we’ll experiment with chemical
energy and concoct fascinating formulas too.
ADVENTURES IN IT
Jason Agress, Instructor
Join us for a week-long foray into the many
exciting facets of information technology and
computer science: networking, programming,
web design, and more. Working in groups,
each day we’ll explore a different topic that
builds on the previous day’s discovery. First,
we’ll design a network; second, we’ll build
a server; third, we’ll build a website to host
on the server; fourth, we’ll write programs
to run on the server; and, finally, we’ll put
it all together. You’ll leave the course with
significant expertise, and a “virtual” copy
of your server. Through special class visits,
you’ll also have the opportunity to meet and
Judi Fitts, Director
Club Invention brings you a set of high-energy
recreational activities that encourage inventive
thinking and creative problem solving, while
applying science, technology, engineering,
math, and the arts. In week 1, Spark, you’ll
embark on a wild animal adventure to explore
some of the most spectacular and innovative
animals on the planet; employ engineering
skills to build a clubhouse where you’ll
use math and logical thinking to decipher
and send coded messages; and investigate
the science of atoms and molecules by
experimenting with bouncy balls. You’ll also
use objects you bring from home to create
your own fanstastical machines. In week 2,
Geo-Quest, you’ll join expedition teams and
travel the globe to investigate five extremes
of the natural world: heat, height, crystals,
water, and cold; design tools to retrieve the
Earth’s hidden messages, working to master
the elements and earn glyphs to create an
illustrated narrative for a petrosphere journal;
and become expedition trainees using your
newly acquired orienteering, letterboxing,
and geocaching skills. You’ll also take apart
appliances from home and re-engineer their
gears and gadgets to invent the ultimate Duck
Chucking Device. In both weeks you’ll enjoy
outdoor games and use available materials
to create completely new games. Each week
culminates in a presentation for family and
friends. Kids will be grouped by age; we’ll
