Nutrients: The Matter of Life In order for organisms to grow, function and reproduce, certain raw materials are required. These raw materials provide: 1. Energy: For movement, work, cellular processes, growth and reproduction. 2. Building materials: To make the raw materials to make cells and tissues (skin, muscle).
