Six colleagues were honoured with the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance at the 57th Anniversary Founders’ Day
Thanksgiving Service on 5 March for their important achievements in or remarkable impact on their respective work areas. (From

The Town Planning Board’s consultation on the rezoning of the southern portion
of the former Lee Wai Lee campus on Renfrew Road from “Government, Institution or
Community” to “Residential (Group B)” will end on 15 April. HKBU strongly opposes the
rezoning which is a lose-lose proposal that fails to resolve the shortage of housing for
people at the grass-roots level on the one hand and results in an irreversible loss of land
for educational use on the other.
Both the Housing and Infrastructure Committee of the
Kowloon City District Council and the Panel on Education of the
Legislative Council have recently expressed their opposition
to the rezoning. It is important to let the Town Planning Board
know the views of the HKBU community so if you have not yet
written to the Board to express your views, please do so. For
details and a template of the objection letter/email, go to the
website www.lwlsite.hkbu.edu.hk. For regular updates on the
issue, “like” the Object to Rezoning of Lee Wai Lee Site Facebook
page (www.facebook.com/lwlsite). Alternatively, visit one of the

HKBU strongly believes that the former Lee Wai Lee Campus site should not
be turned into a luxury housing development. The site is vital to the continuous

development of the University. Our current proposal is to set up a Chinese
Medicine Teaching Hospital on the site to perfect the teaching of Chinese
medicine, benefiting students, patients and the community at large and
facilitating the research and development of Chinese medicine.
The University is concerned about the Government’s decision to
include the site in its land sale programme
when the public consultation by the Town
Planning Board on the rezoning is still underway.
Nevertheless, HKBU continues to have faith
in the due process and we believe the Town
Planning Board seriously considers the views of all
stakeholders. Once again, please join the efforts
of the HKBU community and encourage your
relatives and friends to express their opposition to
the Town Planning Board before 15 April!

Celebrating milestones on 30th anniversary

On 5 March 2013, HKBU
celebrated its 57th birthday,
bringing back memories of
birthday celebrations gone by.
This photograph of HKBU’s 30th
anniversary celebrations in 1986 is
particularly poignant, as the early
1980s were milestone years in the
development of our University. In
1983, the then Baptist College was
brought under the aegis of the
University and Polytechnic Grants
Committee. In 1984, with the
implementation of the Ordinance
of Hong Kong Baptist College,
the College officially became an independent institution of higher education fully subsidised by
the Government. In 1986, Baptist College received permission to launch a BSc (Hons) degree and
a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. No wonder then that the 30th anniversary celebrations were
extremely joyful!
2013 年 3 月 5 日 , 浸 大 慶 祝 57 歲 生 辰 , 也 喚 起 了 好 些 關 於 大 學 周 年 慶 典 的 回 憶 , 包 括 這 張 攝 於
1986 年 的 照 片 , 時 為 30 周 年 校 慶 。 上 世 紀 80 年 代 是 浸 大 發 展 的 重 要 里 程 。1983 年 , 當 時 的 浸 會 學
院 正 式 成 為 大 學 及 理 工 教 育 資 助 委 員 會 的 資 助 院 校 。1984 年 , 隨 著 《 香 港 浸 會 學 院 條 例 》 的 通 過 ,
浸 會 成 為 一 所 獨 立 自 主 、 由 政 府 全 面 資 助 的 高 等 教 育 機 構 。1986 年 , 學 院 獲 准 開 設 綜 合 理 科 學 士
( 榮 譽 ) 學 位 及 社 會 工 作 學 士 學 位 課 程 , 當 年 校 慶 洋 溢 一 片 歡 欣 。

When we walked into Prof Woo’s office to interview him for the Eyes on HKBU e-newsletter, he was
working on a colourful Powerpoint presentation. Not surprising, because Prof Woo has over 30 years of
industry experience with a reputation in North America as a leading expert on energy issues.
It turned out that Prof Woo was not preparing for a boardroom meeting but a class lecture. “I like
to teach. I use a lot of graphics and make the slides pretty colourful,” he says. “I’m introducing business
style management presentation. I follow the style I used for dealing with senior management of very
large companies.”
What Prof Woo learnt from giving depositions in court cases is that even if the concepts are
difficult, the delivery and presentation must be easy. “I might be standing in front of a jury with high
school education. If you don’t present the material as simply as possible, you’re not going to win the
case,” he shares.
“For me, teaching is like a rock and roll show. We need to teach the way the new generation
might appreciate. They don’t pay too much attention to anything, but they can catch a lot of things
simultaneously – they can text, browse the web, and listen to music all at the same time. That’s pretty
amazing! Given how they learn and see things, we might as well teach their way.”

繽 紛 的 簡 報 。 這 並 不 意 外 , 只 因 胡 教 授 在 商 界 累 積 超 過 30 年 經 驗 , 更 是 享 譽 北 美 的 一 位 權 威 能 源 問 題 專
家 。
然 而 , 這 時 胡 教 授 並 不 是 為 商 業 會 議 作 準 備 , 而 是 為 課 堂 講 課 花 心 思 。「 我 喜 歡 教 學 , 並 會 運 用 很
多 圖 案 讓 投 影 片 變 得 豐 富 多 彩 。」 他 說 。「 我 向 學 生 展 示 怎 樣 對 商 界 管 理 層 作 報 告 , 這 正 是 我 過 去 面 對
大 型 企 業 高 層 管 理 人 員 的 經 驗 。」
胡 教 授 從 在 法 庭 上 作 口 頭 證 供 中 學 習 到 , 即 使 涉 及 十 分 複 雜 艱 深 的 概 念 , 在 表 達 時 也 必 須 簡 潔 易
明 。「 在 我 面 前 的 陪 審 團 可 能 是 高 中 教 育 程 度 , 若 我 闡 述 的 內 容 不 盡 量 簡 單 和 容 易 讓 人 明 白 , 便 不 太 可
能 會 贏 得 官 司 。」
「 對 我 來 說 , 教 書 就 像 是 一 場 搖 滾 樂 表 演 , 我 們 需 要 用 年 輕 人 認 同 的 方 式 教 導 他 們 。 他 們 不 會 太 專
注 於 任 何 東 西 , 卻 可 以 同 時 做 很 多 事 情 ─ 同 一 時 間 發 短 訊 、 瀏 覽 網 頁 和 聽 音 樂 , 這 都 令 人 讚 嘆 ! 我 們 不
妨 循 他 們 學 習 和 看 事 物 的 模 式 來 教 學 。」

Ms Tsang joined HKBU in December 2012. As
head of the Internal Audit team, she manages
internal audit and compliance functions,
covering system and operational reviews
to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and
adequacy of HKBU’s internal controls. She
tells us about her switch to internal audit from
financial audit.
I first started my career as an external financial
auditor for a Chartered Accountants firm in the UK.
Becoming an internal auditor was never on my wish list
as it was not a popular career choice for accountants in
those days. After I had been a financial auditor for some
time working for different companies and industries in
the UK, the Mainland and Hong Kong, I found that I had
growing interest in learning the operational aspects of
the companies as I observed that no company even in the
same industry was alike.
At the time, the idea of doing internal auditing
started to pop up in my mind. I didn’t have much
hesitation then so I decided to give it a try. My first job as
an internal auditor was with the Hong Kong Jockey Club. I
have been working as an internal auditor since then, later
joining various public bodies and listed companies.
Internal auditing is quite a challenge as it offers
opportunities to meet different people from different
backgrounds, professions and experience, and keep pace
with the organisation’s ever-changing requirements
influenced by the changing internal and external
environments.
曾 昭 潔 女 士 於 去 年 12 月 加 入 浸 大 , 擔 任 內 部 審 計 處
處 長 一 職 , 專 責 管 理 大 學 的 內 部 審 計 及 合 規 制 度 ,
範 圍 涵 蓋 系 統 和 業 務 審 核 , 以 確 保 大 學 內 部 監 控 的
有 效 性 、 效 能 和 恰 當 性 。 她 告 訴 大 家 當 初 如 何 從 財
務 稽 核 範 疇 轉 至 內 部 審 計 工 作 。
我 的 職 業 生 涯 始 於 在 英 國 一 家 特 許 會 計 師 事 務 所 任 職
財 務 稽 核 。 當 其 時 , 內 部 審 核 並 非 會 計 師 的 熱 門 職 業 , 因
此 這 專 業 從 不 在 我 工 作 考 慮 之 列 。 但 隨 着 從 英 國 、 中 國 內
地 和 香 港 不 同 公 司 及 行 業 財 務 稽 核 所 得 的 閱 歷 , 我 逐 漸 對
企 業 的 營 運 監 控 產 生 興 趣 , 因 即 使 在 同 一 行 業 , 每 家 公 司
的 運 作 模 式 也 不 盡 相 同 。
從 那 時 開 始 , 我 就 萌 生 轉 職 內 部 審 核 工 作 的 念 頭 , 決
心 一 試 。 香 港 賽 馬 會 是 我 任 職 內 部 審 核 工 作 的 首 間 機 構 ,
隨 後 我 也 曾 於 公 營 機 構 和 上 市 公 司 的 內 部 審 計 部 門 工 作 。
我 認 為 內 部 審 計 工 作 充 滿 挑 戰 , 因 有 機 會 接 觸 不 同 背
景 、 專 業 和 經 驗 的 人 士 , 同 時 亦 需 因 應 機 構 的 內 外 環 境 ,
一 起 與 時 並 進 。

At its 57th Founders’ Day Thanksgiving Service on 5 March, 171 staff
who have served the University for 10 years or more were presented
with Long Service Awards in honour of their dedication and valuable
contribution to the University. Colleagues who have served HKBU for
more than 30 years recall a memory from their decades of service that
stands out and tell us what they cherish about working here.
在 3 月 5 日 舉 行 的 57 周 年 校 慶 日 感 恩 崇 拜 上 ,171 名 服 務 大 學 10 年 或 以 上 的 同
事 獲 頒 長 期 服 務 獎 , 表 揚 他 們 多 年 來 對 浸 大 發 展 的 貢 獻 。 我 們 邀 請 成 為 大 學

In the summer of 1978, I joined the workforce and attended my very first
interview in the prettiest VIP Room at Baptist College. Mrs Edna Wong, an
elegant and beautiful lady, who was my first boss, surprised me by saying a
short prayer for the future of my career after the interview. Till today, I have not
forgotten that kind of indescribable joy. I still remember the first day I started
work; Mrs Wong taught me to be polite, to always keep a smile on my face
and to give every task my best. All this advice became my motto through my
decades of work here.
In 1982, Baptist College was on the verge of becoming a governmentfunded
institution and had to accept the recommendation of the University
and Polytechnic Grants Committee to close the Department of Civil
Engineering. That was a painful option. To protest against the move, students
initiated a sit-in outside Academic Community Hall, and President Daniel Tse
joined sadly. From the window of my office, as I saw President Tse sitting on the
curb, withstanding strong criticism from Department staff and students, I could
not stop my tears. That scene is still vivid in my mind.
In the past 35 years, I have grown up with the University and it is indeed
a grace that I can witness many important moments in HKBU’s history. I do not
see this as a job, but also regard myself as a part of the University. The affection
I have for HKBU will last forever in my heart.
1978 年 夏 天 , 初 次 踏 足 社 會 的 我 , 在 浸 會 最 漂 亮 的 貴 賓 室 面 試 。 雍 容 華 貴
的 王 劉 燕 容 女 士 , 即 是 我 的 第 一 位 上 司 , 面 試 後 為 我 工 作 的 前 途 禱 告 , 那 種 難
以 形 容 的 喜 樂 , 我 至 今 仍 不 願 忘 懷 。 猶 記 得 首 天 上 班 , 上 司 教 導 我 要 有 禮 貌 、
要 常 常 微 笑 待 人 , 做 事 要 用 心 盡 力 , 從 此 更 成 為 我 數 十 年 來 工 作 的 座 右 銘 。
1982 年 , 由 於 浸 會 要 成 為 政 府 資 助 的 院 校 , 必 須 接 受 大 學 及 理 工 教 育 資 助
委 員 會 的 建 議 , 停 辦 土 木 工 程 學 系 。 那 是 一 次 很 痛 苦 的 抉 擇 , 同 學 為 抗 議 這 決
定 , 發 起 在 大 專 會 堂 外 靜 坐 , 謝 志 偉 校 長 亦 黯 然 參 加 。 我 從 辦 公 室 窗 外 , 望 見
坐 在 石 壆 上 的 謝 校 長 , 承 受 著 學 系 教 職 員 和 學 生 的 強 烈 抨 擊 , 難 過 得 眼 淚 不 住
地 湧 出 來 , 那 情 景 仍 歷 歷 在 目 。
35 年 來 , 能 夠 與 浸 大 一 起 成 長 , 見 證 浸 大 走 過 許 多 重 要 時 刻 、 經 歷 甜 酸 苦
辣 , 實 在 是 一 份 恩 典 。 我 沒 有 只 視 之 為 一 份 工 作 , 反 而 深 深 感 受 到 是 浸 大 的 一
份 子 , 那 份 濃 厚 的 感 情 , 永 載 於 心 。

In 1980, the then Baptist College was
developing rapidly. The original athletics
field, basketball courts, soccer fields,
badminton courts and other sports venues
were requisitioned for the development of
new school buildings. We had to use the Shek Kip Mei Service Reservoir Playground
at Cornwall Street as the venue for physical education lessons. Initially school buses
were not arranged for us, so we had to walk for about 20 minutes to and from the
playground carrying balls for the different sports and other equipment with us. In
case of rain en route, all of us really struggled, and trudging there in the hot sunshine
was not much easier. Those tiring days lasted several months, until the College
arranged coaches to transport teachers and students. Looking back, this was the
most unforgettable time in my 35 years here, and I believe those alumni who walked
along Cornwall Street with me would find it memorable too.
In 1981, I participated in the Hong Kong all-round athletes competition
organised by TVB and entered the two-day final, which involved swimming, cycling,
basketball, football, 1,500 meters running, a 100-meter sprint, an obstacle race, etc.
Since the second day’s events were broadcast live, teachers and students of the
College were all eager to watch the programme. In the end, I was only the secondrunner-up,
but the cash prize was HK$4,500, equal to 1.5 months of my salary at that
time. I donated it to the College for its further development. Although the donation
was small, my intention was sincere.
1980 年 , 由 於 當 時 的 浸 會 學 院 發 展 迅 速 , 原 有 的 田 徑 場 、 籃 球 場 、 足 球 場 、 羽 毛
球 場 等 體 育 場 地 均 被 徵 用 來 興 建 新 校 舍 , 我 們 只 好 借 用 位 於 歌 和 老 街 的 石 硤 尾 配 水 庫
遊 樂 場 來 上 體 育 課 。 初 時 學 院 沒 有 為 我 們 安 排 校 巴 , 因 此 我 們 上 下 課 都 要 徒 步 約 20 分
鐘 往 返 遊 樂 場 , 同 時 要 攜 帶 籃 球 、 足 球 、 排 球 等 所 需 器 材 , 若 半 途 遇 上 天 雨 , 更 是 狼
狽 不 堪 , 而 在 烈 日 當 空 下 行 走 , 也 一 樣 難 受 。 那 段 艱 辛 的 日 子 維 持 了 數 月 之 久 , 直 到
校 方 安 排 旅 遊 巴 接 載 師 生 上 下 課 才 終 於 結 束 。 現 在 回 想 起 來 , 那 的 確 是 我 在 浸 大 35 年
歲 月 中 難 以 忘 懷 的 一 段 , 相 信 當 年 曾 與 我 一 起 走 過 歌 和 老 街 的 浸 大 舊 生 , 也 同 樣 不 會
忘 記 。
1981 年 , 我 參 加 TVB 舉 辦 的 全 港 全 能 運 動 員 選 拔 賽 , 並 得 以 晉 身 決 賽 。 決 賽 分
兩 天 進 行 , 項 目 包 括 游 泳 、 單 車 、 籃 球 、 足 球 、1500 米 中 距 離 跑 、100 米 短 跑 、 障 礙
賽 等 , 第 二 天 的 比 賽 更 是 現 場 直 播 , 因 此 全 校 師 生 都 十 分 關 注 。 雖 然 我 最 後 只 奪 得 季
軍 , 但 獎 金 有 港 幣 4,500 元 ( 當 年 是 我 一 個 半 月 的 薪 金 ), 後 來 我 把 款 項 全 數 捐 給 浸 會 作
為 發 展 之 用 , 雖 然 捐 款 微 不 足 道 , 卻 是 我 的 一 份 心 意 。

I started my career here in 1983 as a lecturer. At
that time, we solely did classroom teaching and were
deeply involved with students and their activities.
Later, our work expanded to online learning and the
Mentoring and Internship Programme, which I have
been focusing on.
An event I really cherish is the Annual Ceremony
of the HRM Mentoring Programme which showcases
our work through the year under the Programme
and brings together managers, professors, students
and alumni. I am always in happy tears at each year’s
ceremony as I see how the Programme transforms
students’ lives. The 2012 event was particularly
memorable as we bid farewell to the outgoing HR
Director of MTR Corporation, Mr William Chan. He had
had close connections with the School over the years
and the atmosphere at that ceremony was very warm.
A decade of hard work and networking has
certainly paid off. It is rewarding to see our students
starting their careers in organisations as big as HSBC,
MTR Corporation, Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hospital
Authority. The heads at the Department and deans of
the School of Business over the years have supported
me in making the Mentoring and Internship Programme
succeed beyond my wildest dreams. Through the
Programme, I developed a good community network
and my work has become part of my life.

師 , 那 時 純 粹 上 課 教 學 , 與 學 生 的 關 係 密 切 , 並 且 積 極
參 與 他 們 的 活 動 。 後 來 , 我 們 的 工 作 擴 展 至 網 上 學 習 ,
以 及 推 行 實 習 和 師 徒 計 劃 , 而 這 個 計 劃 也 是 我 一 直 專 注
的 範 疇 。
一 年 一 度 的 「 人 力 資 源 管 理 良 師 益 友 計 劃 典 禮 」 是
我 十 分 重 視 的 活 動 , 它 彰 顯 我 們 每 年 在 師 徒 計 劃 下 共 同
努 力 的 成 果 , 並 讓 業 界 高 層 、 教 授 、 學 生 和 校 友 歡 聚 一
堂 。 每 次 在 大 會 上 見 證 計 劃 如 何 改 變 學 生 的 生 命 , 我 眼
中 總 溢 滿 快 樂 的 淚 水 。2012 年 的 活 動 特 別 難 忘 , 因 我
們 歡 送 當 時 即 將 離 任 的 港 鐵 公 司 人 力 資 源 總 監 陳 富 強 先
生 。 多 年 來 他 與 學 院 緊 密 聯 繫 , 那 活 動 的 氣 氛 更 是 溫 馨
感 人 。
看 到 我 們 的 學 生 能 夠 獲 大 型 機 構 聘 用 , 於 匯 豐 銀
行 、 港 鐵 公 司 、 香 港 賽 馬 會 和 醫 院 管 理 局 等 機 構 開 展 他
們 的 職 業 旅 程 , 實 在 欣 慰 , 更 讓 我 覺 得 多 年 的 辛 勤 工 作
和 建 立 的 網 絡 獲 得 回 報 。 工 商 管 理 學 院 多 位 系 主 任 和 院
長 , 多 年 來 一 直 給 予 我 支 持 , 令 實 習 和 師 徒 計 劃 的 成

When I look back, I can clearly remember my very
first day of work at HKBU. I was briefed by Mr Chang
Kuo-sin, Head of the Department of Communication, in
the Sing Tao Building on the Department’s background
and nature of work. Then I proceeded to Room S1102
to start my work with two other colleagues. Time has
flown by quickly over the past 30 years, and I am proud
of witnessing the development of HKBU and the School
of Communication. I am deeply thankful to all the
supervisors and colleagues I worked with for enabling
me to develop my skills on the job.
此 刻 回 首 , 我 仍 清 楚 記 得 第 一 天 上 班 的 情 景 。 那 天
我 到 星 島 樓 , 與 當 時 的 傳 理 系 系 主 任 張 國 興 先 生 見 面 ,
聽 他 講 解 學 系 的 背 景 和 工 作 性 質 。 然 後 , 我 便 前 往 當 時
的 S1102 室 開 始 工 作 , 那 時 連 我 在 內 只 得 三 位 同 事 。 一 轉
眼 , 便 過 了 三 十 年 , 看 著 浸 大 發 展 至 今 時 今 日 的 規 模 ,
同 時 見 證 傳 理 學 院 茁 壯 成 長 , 我 也 感 到 自 豪 。 我 更 感 激

I have witnessed the growth of the Academic Community Hall
over the past three decades. In the old days, many international stars
held their concerts here and it was enjoyable to meet them. However,
out of all the events that I have seen, if I had to pick the one that most
impressed me, it was the graduation of the Capacity Building Mileage
Programme, a learning programme for the elderly launched by the
Open University of Hong Kong. I was particularly touched to see an
elderly lady celebrating her graduation from the programme with four
generations of her family.
In the early 80s, there were only three major venues in Hong Kong
suitable for performance – AC Hall, City Hall and the Lee Theatre. AC
Hall was run on a self-financed basis so we had more commercial events
such as concerts. After AC Hall began to be funded by the University
Grants Committee, we got more bookings from within the University
and other educational institutions. Our equipment has also been
upgraded to keep up with the trends.
I am happy with my job but what has kept me here for 30 years are
the people – my colleagues and the student helpers. Here at AC Hall, we
have a strong culture of working closely as a team, because teamwork is
important in running the facility.
過 去 30 多 年 , 我 見 證 了 大 學 會 堂 的 成
長 。 昔 日 , 不 少 國 際 巨 星 在 這 兒 舉 辦 演 唱
會 , 遇 見 他 們 固 然 開 心 , 然 而 , 最 令 我 印
象 深 刻 的 , 是 一 次 公 開 大 學 「 自 在 人 生 自
學 計 劃 」 畢 業 禮 , 當 時 一 位 長 者 在 四 代 同
堂 的 見 證 下 畢 業 , 實 在 令 我 感 動 。
在 80 年 代 初 , 香 港 只 有 三 個 主 要 表 演
場 地 , 包 括 大 會 堂 、 利 舞 臺 和 大 學 會 堂
( 時 稱 大 專 會 堂 )。 由 於 當 時 大 學 會 堂
要 自 負 盈 虧 , 因 此 大 部 分 節 目 都 是 商 業 性
質 , 例 如 演 唱 會 。 隨 著 大 學 會 堂 獲 大 學 教
育 資 助 委 員 會 資 助 , 學 校 和 大 學 的 使 用 率
亦 隨 之 增 加 , 場 館 設 施 和 設 備 也 順 應 時 代
變 遷 不 斷 提 升 。
我 很 喜 歡 我 的 工 作 , 但 能 夠 令 我 做 上
30 多 年 的 是 「 人 」, 包 括 同 事 和 在 大 學 會
堂 兼 職 的 同 學 。 大 學 會 堂 有 很 強 的 團 隊 文
化 , 須 知 大 學 會 堂 的 運 作 講 求 合 作 性 , 同
事 之 間 的 默 契 和 團 隊 精 神 十 分 重 要 。

I first joined HKBU as an assistant coordinator
in the Division of Extramural Studies and was
responsible for the upgrading of the application
procedure through computerisation. Some years
later, I needed to write a proposal on upgrading
the computer hardware and systems and
present it to the management board, including
the President and other senior staff members.
As a junior staff member, I felt very tense and
spent a lot of time preparing. Fortunately, the
proposal was approved. That was one of the most
memorable moments of my career here.
The Division of Extramural Studies has
grown into the School of Continuing Education
and over the years, the School had moved office
several times. Before we moved into the current
headquarters in Franki Centre, all of my colleagues
were passionate about organising the renovation
to make the office more efficient and comfortable.
I am glad to have been one of those who helped
to overcome the difficulties that arose during the
process.
初 加 入 浸 大 時 , 我 擔 任 校 外 進 修 部 的 助 理 統 籌
主 任 , 專 責 設 計 電 腦 系 統 來 提 升 報 名 流 程 的 效 率 。
在 入 職 一 段 時 間 後 , 因 需 更 新 電 腦 硬 件 及 系 統 , 而
要 撰 寫 計 劃 書 並 在 管 理 委 員 會 內 作 報 告 。 委 員 會 成
員 包 括 校 長 及 其 他 高 層 管 理 人 員 , 那 時 作 為 小 職 員
的 我 , 心 情 實 在 非 常 緊 張 , 花 了 很 多 時 間 去 準 備 ,
還 好 計 劃 書 順 利 通 過 。
校 外 進 修 部 發 展 至 現 時 持 續 教 育 學 院 的 過 程
中 , 我 們 也 搬 了 數 次 辦 公 室 。 記 得 剛 遷 入 現 時 建 新
中 心 的 總 辨 事 處 時 , 同 事 都 齊 心 共 同 籌 劃 , 希 望 令
辦 公 室 更 有 效 率 和 舒 適 。 我 很 高 興 能 夠 參 與 其 中 ,
與 大 家 一 起 克 服 當 中 的 種 種 困 難 。

Southern ties
In January, I was
part of a delegation
led by President Albert
Chan that visited
three institutions in
the US South: Georgia
Southwestern State University (GSW), Emory
University and Georgia State University(GSU).
Each institution follows a slightly different
model, giving us a different perspective on their
operations. Emory is a private university with a rich
endowment while both GSU and GSW are state
universities that rely on public funding. We set out
to look at five areas: internationalisation, teaching
and learning, research, community service, and
whole person education, and we got more than we
bargained for.
We were impressed by how colleagues work
with each other towards the greater good. For
example, at Emory, the staff in many offices we
visited could recite the vision of the university,
showing that they keep it in mind in their everyday
work. We already had a student exchange
agreement with Emory, and on this trip we signed
a student exchange agreement with GSU and an
agreement of cooperation with GSW.
Although we didn’t have time for sightseeing,
we did visit the Carter Center which was an eyeopening
experience. It was relevant to me as I
was just getting ready to join the work force after
completing my Master’s degree in the US when
President Carter stepped down. The work he did
after his presidency speaks for itself.
Both President Carter and his wife Rosalynn
had graduated from GSW and they attended our
meeting and had lunch with us there and showed
us the new building that had been dedicated to the
Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving. We were
happy to renew our friendship with them.
These people-to-people connections go a
long way. At the end of February,
the founding dean of the Honors
College at GSU came to HKBU for
a one-day visit and in May, the
President of GSU is slated to come
by to meet President Chan.
I had spent most of my time
in the US in the South, so I really
enjoyed a breakfast of traditional
Southern biscuits and gravy with
a big helping of bacon on the side
that I had at the airport before my
flight back.

雖 然 我 們 沒 有 時 間 觀 光 , 卻 仍 參 觀 了 卡 特

With flash drives and different kinds of memory
cards gaining popularity, CDs and DVDs are going
out of use. Most CDs and DVDs are not reusable. In
addition, since they are made of mixed plastics,
recycling them involves complicated procedures and
high costs. Instead, they can be upcycled into beautiful
decorations. Here are some simple steps to make a
mosaic photo frame.

淘 汰 。 由 於 大 部 分 光 碟 都 不 能 循 環 再 用 , 而 且 它 們 以 多 種

Materials: Used cardboard, single-side used paper, CD/
DVD fragments, scissors, white glue, paints.

1 Draw the intended shape of

Creating a superb space for learning
營 造 良 好 學 習 環 境
I work under the Campus Life and Amenities Team of the Student Affairs Office and am mainly
responsible for the management of the “Our Zone” and “My Zone” at the Learning Commons on
the fourth floor of the Academic and Administration Building. To ensure a nice and comfortable
learning environment for students, every day I have to walk around the Learning Commons and
check all the fixtures and facilities, manage the usage of the study rooms and large seminar rooms,
help students in using the facilities and compile various guidelines.
Since we had only a few months to plan, design and set up the Learning Commons, one could
imagine how hectic and tough it was. Thanks
to the support of my teammates and the help
from the Estates Office, the Office of Information
Technology and the Finance Office, we managed
to open the doors of the Learning Commons in
the new academic year. The official opening on
19 October 2012 was an unforgettable day for
me. Hearing so much praise and appreciation
from colleagues and students, all the feelings of
hardship vanished.
The Learning Commons is spread across 1,600
square metres and there are a lot of facilities I have to take care of, ranging from door handles and
electricity sockets to computers, ceilings and seats. In the beginning when I didn’t have much
knowledge of these things, it was quite a task for me but I am happy to have learned a lot after I
got familiar with them. What makes me feel most satisfied is seeing students make good use of the
space, especially in “My Zone” where students quietly focus on their studies. This motivates me to do
even better for them.
我 隸 屬 於 學 生 事 務 處 的 校 園 生 活 及 設 施 組 , 主 要 負 責 管 理 位 於 教 學

當 天 , 聽 到 同 事 和 同 學 讚 賞 的 聲 音 , 之 前 的 辛 苦 都
一 掃 而 空 。
整 個 學 習 共 享 空 間 佔 地 1,600 平 方 米 , 要 管 理 的
設 施 也 真 多 , 小 至 門 柄 、 電 插 頭 , 大 至 電 腦 、 天 花
板 、 座 椅 , 我 都 要 兼 顧 , 最 初 對 這 些 東 西 沒 什
麼 認 識 時 真 的 有 點 吃 力 , 唯 有 邊 學 邊 做 。
最 安 慰 的 是 看 到 許 多 同 學 善 用 這 個 學 習 空
間 , 尤 其 在 「 思 語 」 區 , 同 學 都 安 靜 地 埋
首 溫 習 , 令 我 更 有 動 力 為 他 們 做 得 更 好 。

The University has appointed Prof Huang Yu, currently
Acting Dean of Communication, Professor of the
Department of Journalism and Executive Associate
Dean of the Graduate School, to the post of Dean of
Communication with effect from 1 April. Prof Huang joined
HKBU in 1994 and served as Head of the Department of
Journalism from 2006-2011. He received the President’s
Award for Outstanding Performance in Service in 2011. He
was Associate Dean of Communication for almost two years
before taking up the Acting Deanship in September 2012.
大 學 委 任 傳 理 學 院 署 理 院 長 、 新 聞 系 教 授 及 研 究 院 行 政 副
院 長 黃 煜 教 授 為 傳 理 學 院 院 長 ,2013 年 4 月 1 日 起 生 效 。 黃
教 授 於 1994 年 加 入 浸 大 , 於 2006 年 至 2011 年 出 任 新 聞 系
系 主 任 。 他 曾 任 傳 理 學 院 副 院 長 近 兩 年 , 之 後 於 2012 年 9
月 起 擔 任 署 理 院 長 一 職 。
The Institute of Creativity held two distinguished lectures
at which Prof Robert Grubbs and Dr Freddie Fu, two
renowned scholars in the fields of science and sports
medicine respectively, were invited to speak. Prof Grubbs
shared on “Fundamental Science to New Technology” on
26 February, and Dr Fu spoke on “Innovation in Sports
Medicine: Is the Latest Always the Greatest?” on 6 March.
創 意 研 究 院 分 別 舉 行 了 兩 場 傑 出 學 人 講 座 , 邀 得 在 科 學
和 運 動 醫 學 方 面 的 著 名 學 者 Robert Grubbs 教 授 和 傅 浩 強
博 士 演 說 。Robert Grubbs 教 授 在 2 月 26 日 主 講 「Fundamental
Science to New Technology」, 傅 浩 強 博 士 則
於 3 月 6 日 主 講 「Innovation in Sports Medicine: Is the
Latest Always the Greatest?」。
The HKBU • Regal Holdings Golf Day held on 1 March
at The Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling, attracted 150
HKBU staff, students and alumni as well as friends of
the University who formed 38 teams to take part in the
competition. The activity raised HK$1.28 million for the
University.
「 香 港 浸 會 大 學 ‧ 尊 榮 控 股 高 爾 夫 球 日 2012」 於 3 月 1 日
在 香 港 高 爾 夫 球 會 粉 嶺 會 所 舉 行 , 除 吸 引 150 位 浸 大 教 職
員 、 校 友 、 學 生 和 各 界 友 好 , 組 成 38 隊 參 賽 外 , 更 為 大
學 籌 得 128 萬 港 元 。
The University named the multi-purpose hall on the second
floor of the newly built Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Sports
and Cultural Centre on the Shaw Campus the “Mr and Mrs
Lau Chor Tak Multi-Purpose Hall” at a ceremony on 8 March
in recognition of the donors’ staunch support to HKBU.
大 學 於 3 月 8 日 舉 行 命 名 典 禮 , 將 位 於 逸 夫 校 園 、 新 落 成 的
郭 鍾 寶 芬 女 士 康 體 文 娛 中 心 二 樓 的 多 用 途 會 堂 命 名 為 「 劉
佐 德 伉 儷 多 用 途 會 堂 」, 以 答 謝 劉 佐 德 伉 儷 多 年 來 對 浸 大
的 鼎 力 支 持 。

A total of 1,200 colleagues, students and alumni, including
President Albert Chan, competed in the Standard Chartered Hong
Kong Marathon
2013 on 24
February, bringing
home four trophies
in addition to the
“Top Ten Most
Supportive Group
Award”, which the
University won for
the third consecutive year.
So Man-ho (Physical Education and Recreation Management,
Year 1) scooped the first runner-up prize in the men’s junior
half-marathon race. Cheung Ting-yan (Physical Education and
Recreation Management, Year 3) won the championship in the
10 km women’s overall race. Alumnus Chan Ka-ho clinched the
second place in the 10 km men’s overall race, and alumnus Fung
Ying-ki captured the championship in the men’s half-marathon
wheelchair race.
An HKBU support team cheered the athletes, took care of
their bags, offered them food and beverages and provided a
massage service. A great team effort all around!
