To transform 12 cities to places where God reigns!
Through Doxa Deo God raises
people of purpose and passion,
who live to make a difference in
their cities. We call these people
CITY CHANGERS. God has given
Doxa Deo a variety of unique
channels through which CITY
these channels extend over 8
cities – we trust God for 12.
Challenge Your Church Thinking
Chantalle Schutte (Editor)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1996 God spoke to the hearts of our leadership revealing His dream and
special plan for Doxa Deo to play its part in the transformation of cities. The
Scripture which forms the bedrock of the Doxa Deo ministry is Habakkuk
2:14: “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
as the waters cover the sea”. This is our ministry’s calling.
People are the key to God’s plan for changing cities to places where His
glory is established. In Doxa Deo we raise people of purpose and passion,
people who live to see cities changed. We call these people CITY CHANGERS.
They are agents of the Kingdom establishing God’s reign in whatever area
of society they function. Doxa Deo has a variety of channels through which
CITY CHANGERS are raised. These channels include our campuses (Tshwane,
national and international), a City Changers Institute, our schools and
colleges, skills training and development centres, a potential and character
development course for the youth, children’s homes and our City Changers
Foundation.
For some people the idea of church also being a school or a training and
development centre is a challenging one! But that is exactly the beauty of
God’s intention with the Doxa Deo dream. God is not only present in a Sunday
service, He finds expression everywhere in the world around us. Christianity
Through Doxa Deo Lives Are Changed
Alan Platt (Visionary Leader)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Doxa Deo dream is God’s desire to see entire communities come under the
Lordship of Christ. In essence God changes the way people live through our
ministry. For God it is vital that people will find a new way of engaging life to
align themselves with His purpose and plan. Changing the way people live
involves three areas: (i) the way they live in relation to God (Surrender), (ii) the
way they live towards each other (Serve) and (iii) the way they live towards the
world (Sub-due).
If we allow God to consistently impact people’s lives through our ministry on
these three levels, it will ultimately lead to changed communities and changed
cities. We are thankful to God for giving us the mechanisms through which
people’s lives can be impacted. Whether it is a campus, school, skills training and
development centre or children’s home –
God is using these vehicles to change the
is not something that only takes
place within the walls of a church
everyday world and functioning.
This publication takes you on a
special journey through all the
channels that Doxa Deo is the
custodian of. Although these
channels are diverse, they are all
unified by one purpose or mission:
Raising CITY CHANGERS, people
who live to see our cities changed
to places where God reigns!
May you truly encounter God’s
passionate heartbeat for cities as
your read through the publication.
way people live their lives. We invite
you to take a journey through all
these amazing mechanisms. May
your heart be stirred and align with
God’s heartbeat and special plan for
cities.
Tshwane Campus Life
Jean Symons (City Leader of Tshwane)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doxa Deo has nine campuses and three ministry points in Tshwane.
Our Brooklyn Campus, under the leadership of Jaco and Mariette Schutte,
celebrates the launch of a new English multi-cultural ministry point facilitated
in the Encore Theatre in Hatfield. We thank God for His grace as this campus
ministers to hundreds of young adults and TUKS students. We always celebrate
the impact we see in the next generation.
At the East Campus Jurie and Karin Kriel have settled in as campus leaders. We
celebrate a growing leadership momentum as well as an increase in attendance
of celebration services – 10% more compared to last year. One of the focus areas
includes connecting not only new partners with the campus, but also promoting
a richer level of community among current partners. The campus launched a
“Connect Team” to help welcome new partners and also started serving cake and
cappuccinos with their barista team taking fellowship to a new level.
In our Midstream Campus, under the leadership of Johan and Charmaine
Poggenpoel, we are excited to report that we are facing huge capacity
challenges with all of our venues. Although this is a problem, we stand amazed
at the growth with which God is blessing this campus! On the 4th of March an
additional service was started at 17:00 to make room for more people. We are
also proud of Jacques van Wyk, our worship leader, who recently launched his
own gospel album.
The Moot Campus has seen wonderful growth over the last year with Carlos
and Simone Coveiro as campus leaders. People have bought into the vision of
community transformation with wonderful excitement. A recent project has
enabled Moot to replace all the old pews with beautiful new chairs. We now trust
God for His provision to tackle the lack of air conditioning in the auditorium.
Our Inner City Campus, under leadership of Johannes and Emily Lehoko,
has seen a surge in Sunday attendance. A recent ministries exhibition was a
great success with many partners registering to take part. We thank God for
a large impact across many cultures of the inner city of Pretoria. We also have
the privilege of ministering to people of the nearby Salvokop community – a
community that faces extreme poverty and hardship.
awareness about the campus in the
local community. They expect to see
fantastic momentum from this new
location.
In our Silver Lakes Campus Jacques and Amanda Goosen have settled in
The North Campus, under the leadership of Jean and Willianna Symons, has
seen wonderful momentum in attendance and the release of CITY CHANGERS
in the past season. On behalf of the city, North Campus is also facilitating
the growth of our new Akasia Ministry Point in Pretoria North. Here we have
experienced a 100% growth in attendance since September last year with Louis
and Lynette Fourie taking responsibility for the ministry point. We praise God for
His faithfulness!
We always celebrate partners who stand up to take responsibility for the
church. Such is the case at our Raslouw Campus where a recent sermon titled
“It’s time” challenged everyone about their involvement in transforming their
communities! Under the leadership of Alan and Ivy Sutton, the campus has seen
wonderful momentum in its volunteer training program and recruiting day.
Apart from this, partners responded with a massive financial offering to purchase
air-conditioning for the auditorium, enabling Raslouw Campus to increase
their ability to host the increasing growth they are seeing on Sundays. We also
celebrate the unique opportunity to have Doxa Deo Kinderland and Centurion
Christian School on our property.
In our Hartbeespoort Campus, under the leadership of Kobus and Louisa
Windt, we have seen tremendous breakthroughs including a Monday evening
ministry at Hartbeespoort High School and GHS Primary School. We started with
an English service on Sunday mornings and the campus discovered a fantastic
National Campus Life
Nico Nell (National Cluster Facilitator)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doxa Deo has five campuses and three ministry points across five
national cities in South Africa.
Our Langeberg Campus in Durbanville Cape Town was the first Doxa Deo
planting nationally. Heinrich and Charné Dry take responsibility for leading the
campus. Currently the development of a ministry point in Langebaan in the
Western Cape is underway known as the Weskus Ministry Point. An individual
from the public has donated a piece of land to Doxa Deo for the development
of a campus in the Langebaan area. Lofty and Petra Nel are supporting
the project out of Langeberg Campus assisting with the development of
leadership, infrastructure as well as overseeing the building project. The
Weskus Ministry Point has shown tremendous growth confirming our beliefs
of new growth and momentum in the Cape Peninsula area.
new group of people who would
otherwise not have been reached
with the Afrikaans services. We
are also thankful to partners who
sponsored a new visual identity
within the campus auditorium
welcoming a new and fantastic
flavour to the celebration services.
Through our campuses we reach
new believers to find Christ, restore
people who are broken, teach a
new way of living, release the Holy
Spirit in people’s lives and train
leaders to take responsibility for
other people. We thank God for our
campuses through which He brings
people in a closer and more intimate
relationship with Him.
In Port Elizabeth Braam and
Sonja Botha are amazed at the
unprecedented growth, grace and
opportunities God has opened
up to them. Our West Campus has two morning services that are overflowing and evening services that are filled to
80% capacity. As an urgent alternative, a creative solution was placed on the table – the establishment of the Artuo
Ministry Point in Richmond Hill. Here ministry through the arts is used to bring people in a closer relationship with
God. Church is in the format of a street café and theatre productions facilitated by an assortment of art forms such
as singing, drama, piano, violin and acoustic guitar. Leadership capacity was increased when Jaco and Lindi Bruwer
relocated from North Campus in Tshwane to Port Elizabeth to take up responsibility for the praise and worship as well
as management roles in the campus.
Pinetown Campus in Durban brings the warmness, fellowship and friendship which are such distinctive
characteristics of the Doxa Deo Family culture. We are trusting for the next wave of momentum in the city which
will find its expression in English because Durban is primarily an English speaking community. We are confident that
that the campus has a tremendous impact on the “felt needs” of the community and that it can eventually become a
community centre. This belief was confirmed with the success we’ve experienced with the Aftercare Centre that was
launched on the 1st of March last year. The purpose of the centre is to create a safe after-school facility for learners
of various ages. Currently the centre looks after 22 children with partners from the campus running the day-to-day
operations. Gary and Hanelie Kelly, our campus leaders, together with their team dream about an evening service in
English with an alternative approach. We trust with them for a new season of breakthrough!
At Meyersdal Campus in Alberton Johannesburg we are experiencing great excitement as we are embarking on a
“Cornerstone Project” which refers to Doxa Deo’s capital building initiative. Recently the campus made their first ask
and recorded R1.2 million in cash and promises. Hennie and Antoinette Viviers together with their team are amazed by
what God is busy doing in their campus. They plan on handling the enlargement of the facilities in phases to decrease
unnecessary risks that may arise due to the unstable economy.
On the 12th of February 2012 our Fichardtpark Campus in Bloemfontein integrated with the Fountain Head (NCMI)
Assembly to form the Doxa Deo Bloemfontein Campus. Chris and Anet Gerber are the new leadership for the
campus supported by Danie and Joharita Roodt. Together with the new leadership we also welcome their whole
NCMI leadership team! One of the first adjustments the NCMI team made was the introduction of a Coffee Shop in
the campus. “Heartbeat Café” is an area where leadership can connect with partners while enjoying rich, fine coffee
products made by trained baristas after each service. We are learning so much from our new NCMI friends as other
Doxa Deo campuses are already using these fresh and unique ideas in their own campuses. The campus is also planning
an additional ministry point in the Northern suburbs of the city in the next month.
God is blessing our national campuses in a special way. We trust Him for His perfect timing and provision. Jesus said in
Matthew 16:18: “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.”
International Campus Life
Anton Venter (International Cluster Facilitator)
The Doxa Deo Family finds expression in three international campuses.
Our Auckland Campus in New Zealand, under the leadership of Karel and
Marinda Botha, is facilitating Sunday services in the North Shore. More than
200 CITY CHANGERS are currently part of the Doxa Deo city transformation
strategy in Auckland. A proud initiative is their “Out of Africa” day which is
already running for its third consecutive year. Last year the event attracted
8000 people and this year we’ve received a $10 000 donation from a bank in
New Zealand due to the previous success of this day. We are also excited about
Lizahn Crauwkamp joining us from our South African Moot Campus. She is
assisting with the Metamorpho processes in Auckland.
Two campuses are situated in London in the United Kingdom. The Stratford
Campus, under the leadership of Don and Cecelia Price, recently relocated to
Loughton and is now known as the Loughton Campus. Sunday services are
held in the Roding Valley School Hall every second week. Our second campus
is Raynes Park Campus situated near Wimbledon and under the leadership
of Ioannis and Cheray Dekas. In London we have more than 250 partners
committed to establishing the Lordship of Christ in the city. We are trusting
God for a Doxa Deo London School. We already activated a process for the
establishment of the Raynespark Christian School which will be a community
school funded by government.
The most recent development on the international front is the planning of a
Doxa Deo church in Stuttgart, Germany. Basti and Lizzy Hagenlocher have
The City Changers Institute (CCI) formally equips people through post-secondary and tertiary training mechanisms
with the aim of presenting programmes in all of the eight different areas of society. The CCI team is celebrating God’s
abundant favour and grace as student numbers have continuously increased over the past three years to an astonishing
total of 250 students that are enrolled for the 2012 academic year.
We are proud that all CCI courses are Christ-centred and leadership oriented.
Within CCI we not only train people for a specific job or vocation but we train
them to become godly leaders within their respective vocational fields. CCI
focuses on raising CITY CHANGERS in different disciplines which currently
include: (i) ministry training (the City Changers Ministry Program & School
of Divinity), (ii) pre-primary through to secondary education (School of
Education), (iii) organisational leadership (masters in either organisational
leadership or strategic foresight), (iv) business (Masters in business
administration) and (v) various other short courses (Professional Continuous
Education). Recently CCI also started to host a five year Bible study and a three
year leadership curriculum for learners in our Doxa Deo Colleges.
(University of South Africa), Xpand
Leadership Consultants and Ryan
International Schools to name a
few. The CCI team is convinced that
God is on the verge of orchestrating
major breakthroughs. We are
indeed preparing to ride the waves
of His glory when this happens!
CCI has wonderful partnerships that enable us to function meaningfully. This
Doxa Deo schools are environments where children are supported to develop to their full potential in Christ.
In Doxa Deo we have a passion for God and because of this we cannot but have a passion for people. Love and passion for
our city follow with a special focus on education due to its incredible impact on the formation of people in a city. Doxa Deo
schools are the vehicles through which God transform children and society. Our dream is to raise a next generation of CITY
CHANGERS that will know God intimately, love others and act in accordance with Kingdom principles.
The Doxa Deo East School & College (Pretoria East)
This is where it all started 14 years ago and we are still overwhelmed with stories
of life change that keeps on happening on a daily basis. We have 720 learners
ranging from Grade RRR to Grade 12 and 2011 was our fifth year with a 100%
matric pass rate!
We are blown away by the Mobi-Learn Project that was launched with our
48 Grade 10 learners this year. Every learner received an Android based Tablet
containing all their textbooks in electronic format as well as other electronic
resources supporting their learning experience. Gone are the days of carrying
heavy textbooks around all day! Tablets are capable of offering enhanced
eBooks featuring images, video and audio. Other benefits include higher levels
of attendance, participation in the
classroom, more cost-effective than
textbooks, and pacing the learning
experience according to each
learner’s individual need. The College
is changing the face of education
in South Africa! Moving away from
merely conveying knowledge to
teaching learners the skills for
continual learning in a technology
based society. Over the next three
years this initiative will be rolled out
to all College learners.
The Doxa Deo Edendale School (Mamelodi)
Edendale is currently our biggest school in Doxa Deo with 770 learners. We are
astonished at what God is doing here as we celebrate the fact that the school has
grown from only 397 learners in 2007 to 770 learners in 2012 which means that
the school has more or less doubled in the last five years. Our hostel with 137
learners is another area of celebration. Here we have a strategic focus to ensure
further growth in the future.
page _ eight
The Doxa Deo Xanadu School and College (Hartbeespoort)
Our Xanadu School and College have 251 learners enrolled for 2012. We are
excited about our first five matriculants who passed in 2011! At no point in time
do we despise small beginnings. The fact that we are embracing the Mobi-Learn
Project at East College gives us the opportunity to develop a model that can serve
other Doxa Deo schools in the future.
Doxa Deo Kinderland (Raslouw)
Kinderland is our pre-primary and after-school day care centre caring for children
between the ages of three months and Grade 7. We thank God for the wonderful
growth we have seen as our number of children increased from 110 last year to
154 this year. We are also excited that we now have our first English classes as an
addition to primarily Afrikaans classes. The aim is to be a fully parallel medium
school in order to utilise our capacity.
POPKids (Salvokop, Pretoria & Mmakau, Ga-Rankuwa)
POPKids (forming part of POPUP) are day-care centres providing care and love
to 70 children of the Salvokop area and 90 children from the Mmakau area. The
POPKids in Mmakau was launched in January 2012 and we can already see the
difference in the lives of the children. The impact that God is orchestrating in
these children’s lives is just amazing and in sharp contrast to their impoverished
community background.
We are embracing the fact that we are now investing between 30-40 hours
per week in the lives of over 2000 children. We are trusting God for His divine
provision as we aim to redefine the financial models of our schools to ensure
sustainability and more affordable products as we continue with God’s mandate
to establish His reign in our cities.
TREE
Basti Hagenlocher (TREE Coordinator)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TREE is Doxa Deo’s vehicle to TRansform the Educational Environment to
a place where God reigns.
To change a city we need to take responsibility for every school in our
city, making an impact for God in this critical area of society. 2011 was an
important year for TREE where we fully transitioned from a youth worker
program to a movement which calls on the church as a whole to get involved
in the schools in their area. Our campuses are stepping up to the challenge
and we celebrate the privilege to invest in thousands of learners as well as
hundreds of teachers. We are also seeing a growing number of parents taking
responsibility for prayer groups and coaching of sports. For the first time we
are also able to measure the transformation in the schools we are involved
with through an annual learner survey.
---------------------------------------
POPUP (People Upliftment Programme)
Marlene Freislich (CEO of POPUP)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
POPUP is our skills training and development initiative.
POPUP is not only a programme where the unemployed receive marketrelated
skills training but also a place where people are restored on every level
of their being. Apart from receiving skills training, learners also have access to
medical assistance which includes dental and eye care services. Counselling
is available for those in need as well as weekly food and hygiene parcels.
Learners receive a balanced meal every day of their training and also have
access to a clothing bank. POPUP’s holistic approach to the total restoration
brings new hope to so many people’s lives.
From 2005 to 2011, 3 827 people successfully completed their training at
POPUP with 2 297 learners accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord
and Saviour. We are excited to report that 77% of these learners found
employment either in a temporary, contractual, or full-time position. We give
all honour to God when it comes to these statistics.
Last year we launched a second POPUP centre in Mmakau Ga-Rankuwa and
we are planning to launch a third in Soshanguve soon. Both centres will
provide skills training programmes as well as a variety of support services. In
Taking responsibility for
schools in our city
This year will be a year of expansion
to our other national cities in South
Africa, we are trusting God for 120
schools by the end of 2012. Our
focus will be on identifying the
change agents for every school
and serving and supporting of
principals. We are also excited
to transition the coordinating
responsibility of TREE to Cias
Metamorpho is a one year full-time potential and character
development course for school leavers (gap year) or students between
the ages of 18 and 25.
Metamorpho in Tshwane is currently based at the Doxa Deo Brooklyn Campus
with 63 students registered for 2012! We also have three dedicated houses
or communes for student accommodation. Not only do we want to impact
our students but also their immediate family through special events such
as marriage investment days and adventure days for the families. We have
various projects throughout the year aimed at transforming our communities
as well. A highlight so far has been our involvement with the Nuwe Hoop
School for Disabled Children where we helped them to prepare their grounds
for athletics and maintenance work on the classroom.
We are proud to announce we have launched Metamorpho at both our
Auckland Campus in New Zealand as well as our West Campus in Port
The Doxa Deo Children’s Homes are environments where children in need
can flourish and grow in the glorious reflection of God.
We thank God for the wonderful privilege He has given us to witness His
glorious and healing touch in so many children’s lives. Through our Children’s
Homes God is touching abused, neglected, abandoned, orphaned, HIV infected
and special needs children in a profound way. Many of the children enjoy
good health, attend a local school, play sports and are able to take care of
themselves. Other children and babies have more intensive needs and require
the intensive care and love of a dedicated caretaker. In partnership with
children.
The Makhulong Child and Youth
Care Centre (MCYCC) is a special
haven for abused children and AIDS
page _ eleven
elated orphans, some of the children have been placed in foster care with us. Situated at the Doxa Deo Edendale
Independent School the homes currently care for 20 children. To create the most normal home possible the “family
home” model is followed consisting of two houses: (i) the Jabulani House for high school children and (ii) the Shalom
House for primary school children. Our North Campus takes responsibility for the operational support of the centre.
Ki-Deo creates a loving environment for children between the ages of five and 18, suffering consequences of abuse
and neglect. Our slogan “a place to call home” reflects our heart for the children entrusted to us. At the end of last
year two of the children left the home, one successfully matriculating and the other moving in with family. Ki-Deo
welcomed three new children and we are now taking care of 10 children in total. It is such a joy to see how God is
transforming children’s lives. Ki-Deo is linked with our Midstream Campus.
Heneka Haven is a house with 10 special needs babies. The biological parents abandoned these children due to their
severe mental and physical disabilities which include being blind and deaf to epilepsy and a number of other serious
conditions. Some are HIV positive with a generally short life expectancy. We have two babies that are fed through a
tube directly connected with their stomach. Despite all these special needs it is a house of laughter from early to late.
Heneka Haven is connected to our East Campus.
House Lesedi which means “house of light” is a halfway house where abused and neglected babies and toddlers are
taken care of until they can be adopted or reunited with their families. Currently House Lesedi cares for six babies and
is linked to our Hartbeespoort Campus.
Thembiso Baby House is a house for abandoned and orphaned babies. The babies are cared for until they are
placed with suitable adoptive or foster parents. Currently we are caring for five babies and whenever a baby is placed
with an adoptive parent we celebrate it as a glorious victory. We had such a case two weeks ago when a premature
baby born at 28 weeks was placed with his adoptive parents. House Thembiso is based in Cape Town and linked to our
Langeberg Campus.
My House takes care of traumatised children who no longer have a house to call home. They are assisted in all facets
of their development including sport and educational support. My House is based in Johannesburg and linked with
our Meyersdal Campus.
Not only are the lives of the children impacted and transformed through the homes, but those who serve and love
as volunteers are equally changed. You and I were created to be the carriers of His grace and love. These Children’s
Homes give everyone an opportunity to make a difference.
The Doxa Deo Foundation
Gerrit Heymans (Foundation COO)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Foundation was established to empower the Doxa Deo Family to
carry out our calling to city transformation.
The purpose of the City Changers Foundation is to secure partnerships and
obtain funding for ministries and projects in the Doxa Deo Family. We have
seen significant progress since we started about 18 months ago. The two most
important victories are that the Foundation has been able to secure funding to
the value of R1 601 122 for the family during 2011 and the many significant
partnerships we have established. We are excited about the people and
organisations God has linked us with – there are so many lives we still need to
touch and these partners will help us to do just that.
2012 is promising as we have secured funding to the value of R803 620 for the
Doxa Deo Family so far. One of the greatest advantages of being involved in
the Foundation is awareness of the victories and miracles God is providing in
the lives of people through Doxa Deo.
Let the journey
continue...
There are many opportunities for
investment in the Doxa Deo Family,
apart from touching the lives of
people there are also tax benefits
and the possibility of earning BEE
scorecard points in some areas.
An investment in the Foundation
contributes to the transformation of
people, communities and eventually
cities. We trust God for testimonies
of miraculous provision during the
rest of this year.
