death weed. Photo Johan van der Hoeven
Proceedings: On Kite Beach in Maui, Hawaii, a windsurfer with a major dislike for
kiteboarders actively lobbied to have kiteboarding banned. Over the years there had
been some incidents on the water between windsurfers and kiteboarders. This angry
man repeatedly filed complaints with the FAA and eventually succeeded in having
kiteboarding banned within 5-miles of Kahalui Airport for over a year. Even though
there were other launches beyond the 5-mile ban, those areas were typically offshore
with rocky shorelines. It took years for the HKA, notably Martin Kirk, to negotiate with
the FAA, Maui County and others, to conditionally restore kiteboarding.
Don’t Get
Punked!
T
By Rick Iossi and Emi Marino
he sport of Kiteboarding is rapidly growing in popularity.
More and more people are coming out to ride, and some of
our favorite spots are becoming crowded and sometimes
dangerous. Many times we share our favorite launch spots
with sunbathers, swimmers, surfers and windsurfers. Read
on about three killer spots that got the boot.
Result: Today, windsurfers co-exist with kiteboarders in a designated riding area
upwind of Kite Beach or Lower Kanaha. The lesson here is to work at co-existing
with other beach and water users. Many areas have multiple uses for water sports
or just plain swimming and sunbathing. Typically, none of us have a RIGHT to
access. Remember, kiting at some of these spots is a privilege, to be carefully
guarded through responsible riding practices. Many kiters came from windsurfing
backgrounds and still do both sports; it doesn't take that much to co-exist. Use
your common sense and be courteous.
Location: Delray Beach, Florida, USA
Proceedings: At Delray Beach, Florida kiteboarders had been repeatedly crossing
into guarded swim areas which were marked out of bounds. This practice
began to heat up ban concerns with the city. In addition, powered paragliders also
use the same area to launch and fly. One sunny weekend day, a resident in one of
the affluent beachside homes had guests on his pool deck, reportedly, five nude
women. A powered paraglider elected to hover over the man’s residence and
observe the proceedings. As a result, the affluent man called the police who ultimately
banned the “flying” sports in this area. The ban included kiteboarding
because the man apparently could not tell the difference between the two sports.
Chuck Lawson, owner of Delray Watersports and a former windsurfer turned kiter,
Location: Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles
Proceedings: On the windward side of the island sits Lac Bay, a fairly small,
enclosed flat-water area. For decades, Lac Bay has been a popular destination for
windsurfers. Recently, kiteboarders have contributed to some incidents with the
windsurfers on the water. Kiters suggested segregating the two activities; kiting on
one side and windsurfing on the other. It is uncertain as to how universally observed
this policy became but eventually, one of the local windsurfing businesses lobbied to
have kiteboarding banned. They were successful. Unfortunately for us kiters, there
are no other good launching spots on the islands without offshore winds.
interceded with the police. Lawson demonstrated through documents and surveys
that the affluent gentleman’s property did not extend as far East as originally
thought and, therefore, he had no say in the sports that utilized that beach.
Result: A designated launch area was created just to the South of the guarded
swim area at Delray Beach and has become a very popular and safe kiteboarding
spot today. A city ordinance was passed prohibiting kiteboarding within the guarded
beach areas and within 300 yards around the perimeter of that area. So, ride
responsibly! Stay well away from other beach users and posted swim areas.
Respecting these simple rules will protect your access.
Result: Kiteboarding wasn't always banned at Lac Bay.“I was there a few years ago
and was blown away by this ideal riding location,” remembers kiter Rick Iossi.
“I spoke to some of the guys about threats to access and suggested some ideas.
During peak season something might have been worked out, partitioning the bay full
time or during low tide, but apparently it wasn’t resolved.” Reportedly, one of the
concessionaires didn't like kiteboarding, and saw it as a threat; some irresponsible
riding practices gave him ammunition to lobby with the authorities. As a result, kiteboarding
at Lac Bay was banned and is still prohibited today.
Tips to Avoiding a Ban
Don’t let your launch area and favorite riding spot become vulnerable to expulsion.
Be pro-active! Here are five tips from Pro Rider Andy Hurdman to protect your favorite spot:
16
Photo Kim Kern
1 Stay a safe and considerable distance away from other users
including beachgoers, swimmers, surfers, windsurfers etc.
Respect their activities and they will respect yours.
2 Use buoys to mark riding areas and jump zones. Jump and try
new tricks in areas that are forgiving. This means crash your kite
in the water where it is safer, rather than on sunbathers on the
beach or in a parking lot.
3 Keep an eye out for beginners who are inexperienced. Remember,
some beginners have not had any lessons or kiting instruction.
Urge these riders to educate themselves and take a lesson.
4 If your kiting area is used for other water sports, try to communicate
and negotiate with these users. Stay clear of their area or
come to an agreement before there is an issue.
Snowkiting in Colorado.
Photo James Brown
Jeff Swanstrom (1959-2005) passed away on May 16, 2005. He was also
known by local kiteboarders and windsurfers as “Swanie” or “Pony Tail Jeff”.
He was a hardcore kiteboarding pioneer and was liked and respected by the
many people who knew him. Some of his favorite riding spots included
Colorado where he lived, as well as Oregon, Utah, California, Nevada, Hawaii
and Texas. He loved wave riding, big air, kite loops and snowkiting.
Unfortunately, Jeff suffered head trauma and other injuries from being lofted
into a rock spillway while walking around an inland lake. Doctors said that a
helmet would have saved his life. Let this be a lesson to all—wear a helmet.
Music is an integral part of many of our lives and most of us can’t do without it.
Here’s a subjective list of noteworthy music of differing genres to suit any occasion.
Artist: Queens Of The Stone Age
Album: Songs For The Deaf
recent memory! Aggressive power chords and
killer riffs backed by pounding rhythms by
bassist Nick Oliveri and drummer Dave Grohl
Artist: Kings of Convenience
Album: Riot on an Empty Street
Genre: Nu Acoustica
Description: Minimalist, mellow and thoughtful
acoustic music and wholesome vocal harmonies
built on substantial lyrics that blend
together beautifully. They could be described
as a contemporary Simon and Garfunkel with
occasional piano,
stuff added in. Play
■ Free Online Magazine
Dear Editor:
I had two customers in my shop the other day who
were from Guatemala that were totally fired up with
the online PDF download of The Kiteboarder magazine,
and the articles that I had written.
Good job on getting the information out there!
Matt Nuzzo - Owner, Real Kiteboarding, Cape
Hatteras, NC
Thanks a lot Matt! Our last magazine was downloaded
over 34,000 times in one month. We have
been getting emails from kiteboarders around the
world thanking us for our free online PDF download.
We now have the last five issues available at
www.kbmag.com—Ed.
Dear Editor:
We wanted to write you from Poland to say hello.
The magazine available online is very good. Where do we find a subscription or printed
magazine in Europe?
Thank you,
Borys - Via Email
Currently we are not distributing in Europe. We are looking for people who would like to
import The Kiteboarder into their country. Our FREE archive library has our last five magazines
available for download. Check out www.kbmag.com—Ed.
■ Another Perspective on Girls
Dear Editor:
I really like The Kiteboarder, and one of
the main reasons I like it is, because
unlike some of the other kiteboarding
publications, you have actually made
an effort to cover female kiteboarders
as something other than just eye candy.
Still, I don't like the way women are
portrayed on your subscription page or
in Jimmy Lewis' and other manufacturer's
ads. I was dismayed and disappointed
to read the letter last issue ask-
Bri Chmel actually designed this RRD ad.
ing for "More Hot Chicks!" I realize you are in the position of having to please a wide audience
with varying opinions, most of whom are probably 20-something males, but I hope
you'll step firmly into the 21st century and leave the "hot chicks" for Playboy and Maxim,
where any kiter who wants them can find them.
Thanks,
Paul - VA
411
We appreciate your feedback Paul and agree that women should not be portrayed as sex
objects. Did you check out the new RRD ad with Bri Chmel crawling like a commando with
her board during a midnight kite session? Jim Semlor captured her behind the scenes—Ed.
■ Kiteboarding or Kitesurfing?
Dear Editor:
I have a very basic question for you. Is there any difference between kiteboarding and
kitesurfing, as it is called in Portugal?
12K is an Australian adventure born out of twelve thousand
miles of travel to film all sorts of sick riding spots
and progressive riding. You might recognize some of
the spots from a feature in our premier issue, which
followed Andre Philip and his Aussie hosts, up and
down the East coast. In typical Down Under fashion,
there is a good dose of antics including fart bombs,
rental car abuse, skateboarding, bare butts and beer
drinking. This video will make you want to visit the “Outlaw Country” to get
a full kiteboarding experience. For copies visit www.totalvid.com
North 2005 Team DVD
North Kiteboarding’s team DVD is a pleasant surprise
with insane footage of the North team riding spots
everyone dreams of. Will James and Jaime Herraiz
charge dream waves in the Indian Ocean. Charles
Deleau throws down every wake style move imaginable.
Cindy Mosey continues to show why she is one of the hottest women riders
in the world. The DVD includes a gear section where Will James goes over
some of the latest gear. The North team video is more of a promo video but
is still worth checking out. I am sure this video will be playing in shops
If you’re looking for a true snowkite adventure, you definitely have to check out the Wrangell-
St. Elias Mountain Ski & Kite Traverse Expedition scheduled for May 2006. The 14-day trip
starts with a flight to a predestined drop off where you will use kites to cross massive glaciers,
skirting Mt. Logan, Canada's highest peak. Skiing and Kiting endless bowls of powder is the
ultimate goal. Participants must be intermediate skiers and have enough kite skills to land a
back roll on water or snow. All will be carrying large packs on the travel days so you need to
be well balanced on skis or split board and be in good physical shape. Backcountry touring
experience is an asset as is some winter camping experience. Cost is $2500-$3500.
Forecasting Methods 101
By Oliver Govers
“Today will see periods of sunshine, clouds, and breezes with some rain…” We’ve
all seen vague forecasts similar to the one above, but at times, weather forecasting
can be tricky business. Modern forecasts are the result of a variety of forecasting
methods used to give us an overall picture of what the weather will be like in
any given area. Here are some of the methods used.
Persistence Method – The simplest method. This method assumes the conditions at
the time of the forecast will not change (i.e. if it’s sunny and blowing 20mph this afternoon).
This method assumes it will be the same tomorrow afternoon and is useful for
short-term forecasts and in areas where the weather varies little from day to day.
Trends Method – This method involves determining the speed and direction of movement
for high and low pressure centers, fronts, or areas of clouds and precipitation.
Using mathematics, one can predict where any given system may be at a future time.
Climatology Method – Another simple way of generating forecasts by using weather
statistics collected over the years to create a forecast.
Analog Method – A slightly more complicated method of producing a forecast which
involves examining current weather scenarios and patterns and researching a day in the
past with similar conditions to come up with a “good match” to help predict the future
weather pattern.
Numerical Weather Prediction – This method uses the power of computers to generate
a forecast. Forecast models running on supercomputers provide predictions of
atmospheric variables such as rain, wind, temperature, and pressure. Forecasters interpret
this data to assist them in creating a forecast.
It’s no easy feat to come up with reliable forecasts day in and day out, so next time your
forecasters get it wrong, you can cut them some slack knowing a bit more about forecasting
methods. Understanding how forecasts are generated will help you be able to
make better decisions on where to get that next session.
What tips can you offer visiting kiteboarders who want to experience Cabarete?
Experienced kiters should take advantage of the downwind trips and excursions Kitexcite offers.
There are also many brands represented in Cabarete, so it is a good place to come to test all
the latest gear. Beginners should do their research on the various teaching methods, gear stock,
and teaching conditions offered by schools. Kitexcite offers radio helmet and offshore lesson
options which many find advantageous. Check out Cabareterooms.com which is an unbiased
reservation system that allows people to see where hotels are located on the beach or town and
compare pricing and amenities.
What is the best way for people to check the forecast and current conditions in your
area? I have lived in Cabarete for 12 years and know the weather well! Kitexcite.com has an 8-
day wind forecast and 3-day weather and wave forecast which are updated everyday. If you’re
in Cabarete you can also check out the live cams on Kitexcite or eXtreme’s websites
www.extremehotels.com.
What safety tips can you give any visiting kiteboarder? Walk the beach before you ride, so
you know the site. Ask about the reef system. Don’t jump on the beach or ride close to students.
Get out of the water if you hear the air horn blow three times—this signals a squall.
How much growth have you seen in Cabarete over the last six years?
Six years ago there were three kiteboarders in Cabarete and one school. Today there are seven
schools and new construction everywhere. Cabarete is popular with kiteboarders, because it is
easy to get to and has many different riding spots offering a wide variety of conditions. Investors
like eXtreme Hotels are also bringing a higher standard to the area.
Antoinne Jaubert has joined Wipika as National Promotion Manager for the US. Antoinne will be
leading demo tours across North America and displaying Wipika products to the US market and
shops. Antoinne is a self taught kiter who first picked up a kite in 1999. He took 2nd in the King of
the Air in Maui last fall and placed 17th in the PKRA. He is working on perfecting his downloop 3s.
Over the next few months he’ll be on the East coast of the US and Canada as well as the Caribbean.
Naish’s International Kite Team has been stepping it up in competition. 16-year old Dutch rider Kevin
Langeree took 2nd at PKRA Austria and both Bruna Kajlya of Brazil and Rui Meira or Portugal captured
2nd place winnings at PKRA Cabarete. Congrats to the groms!
Dylan Thompson of Hood River is the newest US Team rider to join Wipika Kiteboarding. The 17-
year-old, not afraid to take beating after beating, is well known in the Gorge for putting on a good
show.
The seventh and final year for the Red Bull King of Air event will be from October 9 through 16 on
the wind-whipped North Shore of Maui. Showcasing the world’s top male and female kiteboarders
in what is regarded as the premier kiteboarding event of the season, “Big air” will be the buzzword
as the action unfolds at Ho’okipa. An international field of competitors will be after the prestigious
“Red Bull King of the Air” title and a piece of the $21,000 prize purse. www.redbullkingoftheair.com
PKRA Drops into Cabarete, Dominican Republic
By Marina Chang
The PKRA stop hit Cabarete, Dominican Republic for the fourth year in a
row and still remains one of the more popular stops on the tour. Newcomer,
Rui Meira blew everyone away with a variety of handle pass tricks. In the
Men’s semifinal, Meira took out the Frenchman, Etienne Lhote and went on to the final with Aaron
Hadlow. Hadlow put an end to Meira’s charge with his usual arsenal of handle pass 360, kiteloops.
Hadlow’s win in Cabarete ranks him number one on the PKRA World Tour for 2005 so far. In the
women’s division, Anna Grzelinska battled it out with Bruna Kajiya. Kajiya placed second in the Women’s division to current number one
ranked PKRA Women’s rider Kristin Boese. Boese’s back to blind and huge handle passes made it impossible for Kajiya to win. The
Cabarete stop is not only about the competition. Cabarete’s warm wind and exciting nightlife drew many non competitors to the island.
Maui Kite Festival is all About Fun!
By Sierra Lake
The 2005 Maui Kite Festival was a huge success. Competitors and volunteers enjoyed three
days of almost perfect wind and weather conditions, at Kanaha Beach Park. Spectators got to
watch the latest kiteboarding moves and an exciting Men’s Pro final. It was a close call for the
judges to make between Jesse Richman, Shawn Richman and Scott Drexler. Shawn ended up taking the medal for
first place and Jesse and Scott tied in second. The Girl’s contest saw some great Wahine water and jumping action.
Roni du Preez from South Africa barely beat out Michelle Brown, Fe Garcia and Ala Huntley. On day three it was all
down to the Big Air Hang time contest. With the trades blowing strong and gusty, it was hard for everyone to show
their biggest and longest jumps. Roni du Preez won the girl’s contest with two nice (6.0) second jumps. Sean
Richman won the Big Air hangtime contest with an impressive 8.31 second jump ahead of Greg Drexler (6.21) and
Patri McLaughlin (6.10). The Maui Kite Festival’s main focus is on having fun. This year was no different. Thanks to
everyone who came out and supported the event. For more information on the event, contact kitegirlmaui@aol.com
Who’s the Fastest of Them All?
By Emi Marino
As the popularity of Kiteboarding continues to grow, we
find our sport once again pushing the limits. A new trend
in kiting has emerged; from local scenes to the US Pro
Tour, kite racing and boarder cross events are popping up from coast to coast.
Kite Racing is a course which is several miles long, where riders do one long downwind
tack. This type of event requires riders to develop strong edge control and
stamina with consistent speed for miles. Many times riders are navigating through
chop and waves as they try to gain positions and keep their speed.
Jesse Richman
Photo John Malmberg
On any given Tuesday riders can head to the Sandbar in Hood River, Oregon and test their speed against other riders at the Tuesday
Night Kiter Cross Series. Anyone who can stay up wind is invited to participate; it is a great fun local kiting event. Hopefully these events
will inspire others to race, because the benefits are countless. Not only do they help spread the popularity of the sport, but they also
give riders a reason to get wet. Contest organizer Aaron Sales commented, “Kiter Cross may be the event format of the future. It's in
most athletes’ nature to want to compete to a degree. With this event you don’t have to be 18 and as a flexible as Gumby to compete,
like in freestyle comps. Anyone can do it. Plus the spectators like the up close action and there is always a clear winner.”
A Boarder Cross Competition is a concept that was added to this year’s Velocity Games in Corpus Christi, TX. The Boarder Cross required
contestants to ride as quickly as possible to the most upwind part of the course; once past that buoy, riders followed the course by zigzagging
downwind over and through designated jump buoys. Boarder Cross in Kiteboarding is basically the same as boarder cross events
in snowboarding involving different technical strategies and huge jumps.
The Boarder Cross event at in the Velocity Games (also the 2nd stop of the US Pro- Tour) was a huge success. In both the men’s and women’s
divisions the boarder cross races were definite crowd pleasers. “One person can be leading the whole race and then misses a buoy or a
jump and everything changes. It is very exciting for us (the riders) and the spectators,” says pro-rider and competitor Andy Hurdman.
Boarder Cross and Kite Racing events add a different and innovative new scene to kiteboarding. As more of these events are added to kiteboarding
venues, we will inevitably be introduced to new names and riders who excel at this riding style. Local areas such as Hood River,
Oregon and the San Francisco Bay area in California hold weekly races and are pioneering this segment of the sport. Despite the different
styles between the two, kite racing and boarder cross will only expand and promote the versatility of our sport.
vThe Velocity Games converged on Magee Beach during Memorial
Day weekend. Many of the world’s top professional skateboarders, kiteboarders
and windsurfers traveled from around the world to compete for over $50,000
in cash and prizes. This year’s games brought in major title sponsors such as
Nissan, Budweiser, Coca Cola, Clear Channel, Time Warner Telecom, Quiksilver,
Hurley, Volcom, Element Skateboards, Osiris, Dakine, Reef, Benjamin, Omni Hotels,
The Doctors Center, Hooters, Zero Gravity Kiteboarding, Best Kiteboarding, Wipika
Kiteboarding, and The Kiteboarder Magazine, along with a sleuth of local supporters.
The kiteboarding competition added a new Boarder Cross discipline this year.
Competitors were challenged to race on a slalom course that included buoys to
jump over and strategic upwind tacks. Mother Nature cooperated three out of the
five days and delivered 15-20 knot winds. Sunday’s Expression Session final was
stopped short when a Texas squall came barreling through at the end of the day.
Everyone ducked for cover out of the rain while watching shingles blow off a nearby
building. Over a thousand people watched world-class kiteboarders Sky
Solbach, Clinton Bolton, Andy Hurdman, Adam Koch, Shannon Best and Jon Modica
battle it out in the Men’s freestyle final. Best Kiteboarding rider Clinton Bolton’s
incredible kite loops barely edged out North Kiteboarding’s Sky Solbach for the
win. The final had to be stopped short due to electrical currents in the air. The riders
were getting shocked when landing their moves.
The Boarder Cross competition was an interesting new concept. Naish
Kiteboarding’s Adam Koch blazed the course in the final, but lost his board on his
last tack. Sky Solbach was able to edge him out at the last moment and claim the
win. 15-year-old Morgan Skiperdene from the Dominican Republic came out of the
woodwork and won both the Women’s Freestyle and Boarder Cross disciplines
winning $2,500. The fun factor of this year’s kiteboarding competition was at an
all time high and dozens of new faces came on the scene to stake their claim.
This year’s event was blessed with plenty of sunshine and crowd participation,
estimated at 50,000 over the five-day period. Magee Park was literally transformed
into an action sports village filled with a 68-foot mini-ramp, climbing walls, a competition
trampoline and a live sound stage that hosted several local and nationally
recognized bands. The kiteboarding and windsurfing venue were only steps away
on the adjacent beach, blending the best of both water and land action sports.
Thank you to the city of Corpus Christi and the Velocity Games’ board of directors
for putting together a great event. www.velocitygames.us. ■
