History<br />

<strong>San</strong> <strong>Gabriel</strong> was founded in<br />

1771. <strong>San</strong> <strong>Gabriel</strong> became<br />

the heart and soul of the Los<br />

Angeles region. Although<br />

this mission was originally<br />

estadlished along the slope<br />

of montebellu, it was<br />

moved to the nativemilies<br />

left and 9 miles west to from<br />

site of lisanchanga. After<br />

de Los Angels ( present day<br />

L.A. After Mexico won<br />

independence from Spain ,<br />

all the mission were<br />

serclized. The land that was<br />

supposed to be given to the<br />

natives was given amostly to<br />

dishunest pulitians and their<br />

the mission to a friend. But<br />

Location<br />

The padre of this mission is<br />

Friar Serra Cumbun. <strong>San</strong><br />

<strong>Gabriel</strong> was originally<br />

established along the slopes of<br />

the Montebello hills at the<br />

native site of Shevaanga. But<br />

in 1775 the mission was<br />

relocated to the native site<br />

which is lisanchanga 3<br />

miles to the northwest. It is<br />

also 9 miles east from<br />

downtown Los Angeles.<br />

Indians of <strong>San</strong> <strong>Gabriel</strong><br />

The Indian that lived near <strong>San</strong> <strong>Gabriel</strong> are the<br />

Chumash and the Tongva. They believed they<br />

were created from the land. So they gave<br />

many thanks to their creat flutes and rattles.<br />

When they were doing rituals and ceremonies<br />

they played carved flutes and rattles. They also<br />

dances and sang songs. The Indian men had<br />

another ritual, as sweet ledges. Sweat ledges<br />

were mud huts built near the river The men sat<br />

inside the sweat ledges by a hat fire until they<br />

dripped with sweat. They would jump in the<br />

river and cleanse themselves. In the winter<br />

they would keep warm with blankets and capes<br />

they made form feathers, rabbit fur, or sea<br />

other skin. The villagers of the Indians would<br />

carve bowls pipes and breads from a soft rock<br />

called steatite.<br />

Purpose Of Mission<br />

The California Indians who joined the<br />

mission were called neophytes. once<br />

neophytes are apart of the mission, they bare<br />

not allowed to leave. In older missions, they<br />

realized if they let the neophytes leave they<br />

will return to their old ways, lose their<br />

clothing, and forget what they learned at the<br />

mission. But at the mission, the neophytes<br />

had little chance to practice their old ways .<br />

They were forced to do what the people of<br />

the church said. This included working,<br />

praying, and lessons. The missions were used<br />

to convert Indians to Catholicism.
