Smart Ecology Project - Massive Mobile Phone Recycling, Done Right
Over 10,000 Units of Mobile Devices to Undergo Ethical Recycling
SHAH ALAM, 17th May, 2013 – Ninetology Marketing Sdn Bhd, an Asean mobile device technology
company in partnership with Malaysia’s largest non-profit environmental organisation, Malaysian
Nature Society (MNS) successfully integrated the execution of the much celebrated, Smart
Communication system’s crucial feature for the environment’s betterment, Smart Ecology.
MNS’s engagement in the closing ceremony of this project involves receiving all 10,000 units of the
gathered mobile devices to be sent for e-waste recycling. Smart Ecology is a nationwide ethical
recycling project of old or unused mobile devices project which simultaneously functions to convert
feature phone users into using smart phones.
“Today, we witness 10,000 units of mobile devices to be sent for recycling. From how I see it, it
represents 10,000 Malaysians who have and are contributing (working together) towards a greener
earth. We should strike a balance as technology has a never ending growth, hence we must never
forget our earth and our very own wellbeing in the long run,” said Sean Ng, Chief Executive Officer of
Ninetology.
“Looking back at the start of our partnership last year, Ninetology’s entry-level smart phone Palette
i5300 was the device of collaboration with MNS, which allowed users to receive additional rebates
upon surrendering their old or unused mobile phones in order to purchase Palette at a lower price.
On top of the rebates, RM 1 of each Palette sold is contributed to MNS for its conservation activities
nationwide and 22,333 units were sold in total within the two months from the date it was launched. I
am truly proud that Ninetology is working with MNS in becoming a part of something spectacular for
our environment,’ he explains.
According to MNS's Executive Director, Mr. Shah Redza Hussein, “Recycling raw materials from
exhausted electronics is the most effective solution to tackle the growing e-waste problem in our
country. This worrying state of daily e-waste accumulation is an undeniable issue faced by all
developed and developing nations. Most electronic devices contain a variety of materials, including
metals that can be recovered for future uses. By dismantling and providing reuse possibilities,
precious(unimpaired) natural resources are conserved. Land, air and water pollution caused by
hazardous disposal can be continuously avoided with our extra effort.”

“Additionally, recycling reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the
manufacturing of new products, especially when it comes to electronics’ production which can further
amplify the existence of polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), used as flame retardants, and
phthalates, used as plastic softeners – which are all hazardous to our ecosystem. The 3Rs ( Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle ) should always be remembered and implemented for us to captivate the balance
in our ecosystem. Production of electronics and mobile devices is continuous hence the effort of
recycling and reusing continuity must be equally as intense,” he added.
“We urge everyone to recycle and for mobile phone and electronic gadgets users to utilize technology
in a thrifty manner. With the awareness translated into action taking, each individual can make a
significant difference,” he continued.
Ninetology and MNS’s partnership shall see future project collaborations to cultivate in-depth
knowledge and awareness among the society in becoming more acquainted of what is happening to
our mother earth. Rather than only pursuing latest technologies mobile device brands could offer.
