Observance of Sanitation Week in Purulia

Objective-
• An intensive campaign for promotion of Sanitation & Hygiene practices of rural people
• To communicate the messages of need & scope of HHs Toilet and demand generation
• Joint participation to achieve the target of Nirmal Gram Puraskar
Strategy of Implementation-
I) Decisions and POA was developed in District level meeting involving all concern through
participatory approach. II) Some macro activities from District level III) some micro activities
from GP level. IV) Well designed IEC plan of District level activity was developed by the District
and shared with all area concern Prodhans, Sabhapoti, BDO and concern performing agencies. V)
Circular mentioning the responsibilities had also shared with all concerns VI)) A programme
monitoring committee was formed at District level for hours to hours monitoring and reporting to
the AEO ZP
Use of IEC tools-
I) Mobile well decorated two tableau with folk artist moved throughout the District during 5
days as per root chart
II) Paintings of 100 pictorial walls at GP areas carrying with sanitation messages
III) No. of 50 pictorial flex banner was displayed
IV) Use of Puppetry on sanitation drama
V) Street drama on Sanitation & Hygiene practices
VI) Use of Pot songs on Sanitation
VII) Use of Magic show
VIII) Use of Jhumur and Bowl songs on sanitation message
IX) Use of cable channel of TV providing sanitation clippings developed by UNICEF
X) Use of daily news paper for message communication
XI) Documentation
Area covered –
No. of 65-70 venues at 25 targeted GP areas
Programme follow up-
The sanitation week was observed by Zilla Parishad on 8 th March on occasion of International
Women’s Day of 100 Years and continued up to 13 th March 2010 for promotion of sanitation &
hygiene practices of rural people in Purulia. Field level activity using sound system was not done
on 8 th March due to Madhayamik examination. The news of ‘observance of Sanitation week’ was
broadly published in daily news papers and cable channel. No. of 50 pictorial flex banner and 100
pictorial wall paintings carrying the sanitation messages had displayed at 20 blocks, 20 GPs and
town areas before 9 th March 2010.
Flagging off the programme-
On 9 th March 2010 at 11.00 morning from Zilla Parishad campus two colorful well decorated
tableau with folk artist was flagging off by the Sabhadhipoti, District magistrate, Additional

Executive officer and State chief of UNICEF, Kolkata. Tableau moved the town with women’s rally
and then after started for GP areas divided into two parts which covered around 600 KM area of
the District during 4 days.
On the occasion of inauguration Sabhadhipoti, district Magistrate and Unicef state chief
wishes the success of the program through inaugural
speech. Ms Lori calvo says that she is happy for coming in
the programme and also conveyed her thanks to Zilla
Parishd for inviting her. She congrats to Zilla parishad for
organizing such wonderful programme on Total sanitation
campaign. She also reminds that Purulia is one of the
districts which has to improve in order to Purulia for the
best interest of children & family. The wonderful parade
and also effort of the district, she expressed her hope of
success of the programme. She conveyed her thanks for all.

Out comes from IEC activity at field level-
Sanitation messages was communicated through
mobile tableau at one side and at another side no. of 65‐70
spots of targeted GPs have been covered with folk‐cultural
activity which was very much effective IEC tools for
changing the mind set up of the villagers.
In some places,
people’s opinion was to
demonstrate more show at
villages. In some areas
people’s opinion was they should learn from this and change their
habits.

to PRI members why this message has not communicated from
panchayat side. Huge villagers gathered to see and hear the
programme of Magic show, Pot songs,

Puppetry, Sreet drama, Talking doll and
Jhumur, Bowl etc.
In some areas women SHG has deposited
their contribution for construction of HHs toilet
Now dream is in reality. Women SHG
have come forward and now in relax mood.
Ultimately the programme has
developed a momentum and able to reach as priority sector programme in the District. Now it is
big question of challenge to reach immediate goal ie qualifying of NGP claim.
