I want to welcome the Class of 2009
into the West Irondequoit Alumni
Association. Our numbers keep growing,
yet we remain close to one
another. West Irondequoit has always
been a place to come home to, and
our home has seen many changes
throughout the past several years.
We are now in the final phases of
major renovations at IHS. The new
pool and improved tennis courts
should be ready for student use this
coming school year. In the district’s
tradition of excellence, our students
took a record 850 Advanced
Placement exams this spring.
Historically, 75-79% of those students
have consistently attained scores
qualifying them for college credit.
July 2009 Newsletter
Alumni are welcome to visit IHS to see the wonderful improvements
being made. We have over 10,000 alumni still living in the Rochester
area. Many alumni have moved back to West Irondequoit, as parents know
the value of a good education. We should all be proud of our alma mater.
A common theme among the Generations of Excellence Scholarship applicants
is the pride our senior class members feel in having attended the
same school their parents did. We are delighted that so many parents and
children have been able to share the same fond high school memories.
The West Irondequoit Alumni Association values the input of its graduates,
and we are always open to your ideas for the alumni newsletter.
Please visit us at www.westirondequoit.org/ alumni/htm to share your
thoughts and ideas.
In May 2007 West Irondequoit residents
approved the construction of a new
swimming pool at IHS. The original pool
was added to the building in 1958 and
while it had served the community well
for 50 years, it was showing its age.
Mechanical failures were frequent and
the pool was too small to meet today’s
needs.
The new pool is being constructed in the
same location with additional area
obtained by moving the east wall out 24
feet. The pool will have eight lanes,
replacing the previous five and the new
pool will be 14 feet deep at one end
rather than the original 11 feet. You can
follow our progress at
www.westirondequoit.org/capital_project
_updates.htm.
Construction began in June 2008 and
will be complete in September 2009.
Although we have had no swimming
facility on site this past year, all of our
swimming programs have continued at
neighboring pools. Please visit
www.westirondequoit.org for details of
the pool opening toward the end of summer.
We’d love to hear your memories of
the original pool or of school sponsored
swimming activities prior to its construction
– yes there was a swim team
before there was a pool! Send the alumni
office a note at alumni_
Generations of Excellence –
Years of Tradition
Each year, a new class of graduates joins our
Alumni Association. Many of those graduates
are following in the footsteps of parents
and grandparents who are also alumni of
Irondequoit High School. In 2004, the West
Irondequoit Alumni Association began to
showcase this tradition of excellence by
awarding the first Generations of Excellence
scholarships.
To be eligible for this award, graduating seniors
must have a parent, or grandparent who
is a graduate of Irondequoit High School.
They must be a good student who worked
hard in school, they must have attended IHS
for four years and they must be planning to
attend a two or four year college or a vocational
school. Applicants must write an essay
telling of their experience belonging to a
family that has had two or more generations
of students in West Irondequoit Schools and
must provide two letters of recommendation.
On June 2, Steve Arter Englert ’57 presented
the seventh set of scholarships to our
newest graduates. Danielle Crary, Jackson
Frenzel and Michael Keeley each received a
check for $100 and an engraved clock.
Danielle followed in the footsteps of her dad
William Crary ’77 and her mom Michelle
Crevier Crary ’80. In her essay Danielle
wrote, “My father and his four sisters and
my mother and her two brothers and sister
all attended Irondequoit High School. It was
important for me to graduate from the same
school as my relatives for the simple fact
that there were memories and traditions
created within the walls that I have walked
Don’t forget to update personal
information on the IHS Alumni
database so you receive the alumni
newsletter and other
Call 585-336-3067.
for the past four years. I am proud to attend
the same school as my family did.” Danielle
will attend SUNY Fredonia this fall.
Jackson was preceded at IHS by his dad
David Frenzel ’72, his grandmother Joan
Record Frenzel ’47 and his aunt Mary
Frenzel ’85. Jackson wrote, “I have enjoyed
being part of a long line of Irondequoit High
School graduates. I worked at the same
radio station that my father and cousin Mike
did years before and had some of the same
teachers that taught my Aunt Mary. I feel
proud of the education that my family and I
have received at Irondequoit.” Jackson is
headed to the University at Buffalo.
Michael’s mom Elyse Rothstein Keeley ’74
and his uncle David Rothstein ’78 paved the
way for him. Michael wrote, “Having relatives
as IHS alumni is interesting because I
mention names of teachers that my mother
and uncle remember from when they attended
Irondequoit High. It is interesting to
think that even though we attended high
school at such different times, many things
never change.” Michael will attend SUNY
Oswego in September to study Broadcast
and Mass Communications. “My dream job
would be to be a play by play sports broadcaster.”
Do you have a child or grandchild soon to
graduate from IHS? Encourage them to apply
for the generations of Excellence
Scholarship. Applications are available from
the Alumni Office at 585-336-3067 or online
at www.westirondequoit.org/alumni.htm. ■
On May 9, the stadium at IHS was rededicated
to Gordon Allen. Coach Allen’s daughterin-law
Sue, his son Dick, granddaughter
Jessica and great grandson Andrew were on
hand for the ceremony which was led by
Athletic Director David Green ‘75.
Gordon Allen coached and taught in West
Irondequoit from 1942 to 1972, and served
as Athletic Director. The 1963
Neodaondaquat was dedicated to him. He
was a mentor to many, a role model for all
and a true gentleman.
The 2nd Annual IHS Women’s Alumni Lacrosse Game was held
Saturday, August 2, 2008 on the turf field at Irondequoit High School.
Fourteen women from the 2008 graduating class through the Class of
1998 came to participate in the fun. Former coach Chris Harvey was
the referee as the women played half field play. On an overcast morning,
odd versus even graduating classes took the field at 10:00 a.m.
Lots of laughter, goals and ribbing punctuated the play, Sarah Wright,
class of 2004, organizer and goalie, made multiple saves. IHS Assistant
Varsity Girl’s Lacrosse Coach Sarah DePeters was a tough defender
and managed to score some awesome goals. Cousins Clair Sick,
Rachael Harvey, and Cailin Harvey enjoyed the competition. If interested
in scheduling for future games, please contact Sarah Wright at
Alumni Spotlight Shines on
Class of 1981 Nila Webster
By Earl Doser ‘52
How cool is it, to return to your grammar
school after 31 years, and read a children’s
book YOU WROTE, to the third grade class?
That’s exactly what Nila Webster did last
year, at Seneca school (a highlight of her
year). The presentation focused not only on
the books themselves, but also on the wonder
and joy of creative writing.
Nila lived on Baron’s Road, near St. Paul
Blvd. & Thomas Ave., and attended Seneca
School. She walked to school, accompanied
by her mom when she was in kindergarten,
then on her own (how many kids do that
now?).
While attending IHS, Nila worked at the
YMCA during summers, and also had a regular
babysitting gig.
Her best memories of high school? “Mr.
Agor’s creative writing class, and John
Thompson’s Advanced Placement English
class. Both teachers were tremendous, and
it was in these classes that I realized how
deeply reading and writing can change our
lives. Mr. Brown and Mr. Greaves were two
of my other favorite mentors”.
Nila went to Tufts University, majoring in
English. Her first job after graduation was
as a high school English teacher at a small
parochial school in Boston. She taught
English for seven years, and used some of
the same novels she read at IHS. She now
resides in Revere Beach, just north of
Boston. Her first book was Literature for the
Journey: World Literature and the Inner
Life,a text book for high school students,
published in January, 1992.
In her own words: “I never thought of writing
children’s books until I met a professional
children’s illustrator, George M.
Ulrich. He knew I wrote adult fiction, and
we encouraged each other in our art. And
then, in the tragedy of Columbine, I began
to contemplate what might possibly make a
difference for children by awakening in
them a sense of self-love and love for oth-
Nila Webster, her mother Jani Johe Webster and
her grandmother, three generations of poets!
ers. One day, I said to George, ‘I’d like to
write a children’s book that would counterbalance
what happened in Littelton.’ That
day, the Saturday before Mother’s Day, 1999,
I wrote The Gift of You, The Gift of Me, my
first children’s book. George was commissioned
to do the artwork for the book, which
was published in 2005.”
Within a few weeks of publication, Nila was
visiting local schools sharing the message of
the book, which is one of self-love and gratitude.
Since then, word of the presentation
has spread, and she is already booked for
the foreseeable future.
Nila has written two additional children’s
books, both collaborations with her mother,
Jani Johe Webster, who has been writing
and publishing poetry since before Nila was
born (ah ha-that’s where Nila got her inspiration!).
The two books, Remember Rain and
Remember Beauty, tell the story of an
unlikely friendship between a tiny cat
named Budda Baby, and a Great Lone Wolf.
Children relate to the idea that we can be
friends with others unlike ourselves, and
that friendship is a very special and healing
thing. All three of her children’s books have
been read to grammar school classes,
kindergarten through seventh grades.
If you’re ever asked if you know someone
famous, say Nila Webster, renowned author of
books for children, and you both are IHS grads.
And next time you’re in a library, ask for
Nila’s books, especially if you have gradeschool
kids or grand kids. They will be
thrilled with these stories. The Irondequoit
Library, at Titus & Cooper has them!! ■
My Life in Iraq: A Nutshell-Taste
It’s twelve midnight on Sunday, 8 March
– International Women’s Day – and I’m
sitting here at my kitchen table in my
office in Ain Sefni, a rural town in
Sheikhan District of Ninewa (Mosul)
Governorate in northern Iraq whose population
is a mixture of Izidis, Christians,
Muslims, Kurds, Arabs, and Hostas
(“Gypsies”) – and one Buddhist - me.
Maybe by writing about my experiences
today, I can give you a nutshell-taste of
the life I’ve been living here in Iraq
since 2003.
I work as the General Director of
Concordia, a local Iraqi nongovernmental
organization that I helped start in
November 2003 after visiting Iraq twice
on organizational work with the
American Kurdish Center of Fairfax,
Virginia. To fill you in briefly, I was living
in Philadelphia in the spring of
2003, newly divorced after 11 years of
marriage to a Tunisian man, when I
decided to take a job near Washington
as the executive director of a small
Kurdish-American organization with a
project in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil,
now the capital of the Iraqi Kurdistan
Region. I worked six months with the
AKC and found I liked living in Iraq
much more than in the suburbs of
Washington – the people in Iraq were
friendly and welcoming, and I loved the
Kurdish culture of colorful clothes, dancing
at weddings, delicious lunches and
dinners, and hospitality toward
strangers. The people here seemed more
genuine and more involved with basic
things in life than Americans typically
are, and I felt at home in the land of pistachios,
apricots, and sesame.
After helping to organize and run two
training workshops in September 2003
in Erbil and Kirkuk in trauma counseling
and peace education for local Iraqi
organization members, teachers, and
health-center staff, I quit my job at the
AKC and moved to Erbil, living three
weeks in a hotel before relocating in
December 2003 to our first Concordia
office – a two-story house in Ainkawa, a
mainly Christian town next to Erbil
By Barbara Lakeberg ‘70
where many organizations had their
headquarters. With eight Kurdish
Muslim friends from Dohuk and Erbil, I
started Concordia, planning to do
democracy and human rights educational
projects, trauma-counseling training,
and other local civil society-development
work.
By February 2004, after two training
workshops for school counselors and
directors, we were planning a large project
with financial support from an
American NGO, Research Triangle
Institute. For the next five months, our
Barbara Lakeberg at a workshop near Sheikhan.
office in Ainkawa and our newly established
office in Dohuk carried out hundreds
of democracy and human rightsrelated
dialogues with local people, 16
workshops, and one art exhibition
(“Women and Human Rights”) featuring
the paintings of a young Kurdish
Izidi artist who became a close friend of
mine. Concordia quickly had over 30
staff divided across two offices in northern
Iraq and a solidly developing reputation
for good work with local citizens.
Since the RTI project, we’ve had funding
from a number of international NGOs
(American, Swedish, and Norwegian),
UN agencies, and some regional Iraqi
Kurdistan ministries in the north, with
the bulk of our funding coming from
non-Iraqi sources. We’ve worked hard to
keep ourselves separate from political
party control and have never taken
money from any of the political parties.
This is important in a place where
almost no NGOs are truly independent
of political control, and it’s allowed us to
help a number of persons from different
political sides of the fence.
Most of our work has been in the area
of human rights and democracy education
and human rights advocacy and
protection, with additional work in the
areas of trauma counseling, social problem
solving, and environmental education.
We work with women and men of
different faiths and cultures, and our
board and staff are an eclectic group of
people – Izidi, Muslim, Christian, and
Buddhist (me) – mainly professionals
(teachers, lawyers, engineers, and
artists) with others mixed in who have
less education but are interested in
working in a democracy-oriented organization
and have skills to contribute to
our work. Because the population in the
cities where we live is mainly Kurdish,
we don’t have many Arabs working with
us, but some of our staff are mixed Arab
and Kurdish, Arabs from Mosul, Kirkuk,
Baghdad, and Karbala have sometimes
participated in our workshops and art
exhibitions. Occasionally we’ve been
able to include Turkomans in our workshops,
too – they’re a much smaller
minority in Dohuk and not so large in
Erbil, where we closed our office in
March 2005 after moving our headquarters
to the more-northern city of Dohuk.
Our board and staff also include
ChaldoAssyrian Christians, and we’ve
had Armenian Christians as colleagues,
workshop participants and volunteers in
our activities, too.
Good News
from the
West Irondequoit Central School District
A sample of our students achievements over the past year.
The Good News is published monthly at www.westirondequoit.org
Irondequoit High School was recognized by Newsweek
magazine as one of the top high schools (out of
approximately 27,000 high schools) in the United
States, with a rank of 357 out of 1480 schools studied.
Schools are rated on the percent of students who take
Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or
Cambridge exams, compared to graduating seniors.
IHS has been on the list every year that it has been
published. More importantly, more than 70% of our students
consistently score 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams, making
them eligible for college credit. In May 2009, 850 students
wrote AP exams, an all-time record.
Two IHS business students, Sam Kennedy ‘09 and Tyler
Condello ‘09, earned the title of World Champions at
the DECA International Career Development
Conference in Anaheim, CA. Their event required
them to run a simulation program of a retail store. All
decisions to run a store, including staffing, purchasing,
pricing, promotion, location, financial analysis, etc.
were required to be made and managed over a 15
minute window against 16 other finalists who competed
on-line during a period of eight weeks to make it to
this level. It took five matches of 15 minutes against
four teams at a time to finally be crowned – world
champions!
Ryan McCormick ‘09 won the Class A singles
Section V tennis title this year and was the Class A
doubles champion the previous two seasons. He is the
first IHS player to play singles in the state tournament.
Six IHS students were recognized by the National
Merit Scholarship Program. Benjamin Detty, Megan
Supple and Emily Walsh earned National Semifinalist
status. Commended Students are Robert Cigna and
Laura Dolan and Bobbi Mason was recognized as an
Outstanding Student.
The Girls Volleyball Team brought home the NYS title
in November.
Thirty IHS students exhibited their work at ArtPeace
Shakedown ’09 at the Village Gate Square in May.
The show celebrates and showcases the visual and performing
talents of high school students in Monroe
County and featured exhibits from 31 area high
schools.
Jonathan Merritt ’09 was the recipient of the
Irondequoit Art Club Scholarship Award and the
Irondequoit Art Club Award for his promising digital
and traditional photography work. Jonathan’s photos
were exhibited at the club’s annual show in May.
For the eighth time in the past ten years, West
Irondequoit has been named among the Best for
Music Education in America by the North American
Music Merchants Foundation. The district earned this
honor for its “strong comprehensive music education
programs.”
The Odyssey of the Mind program fielded 33 teams
in 2008-09, ten teams advanced to the state competition
and two teams went on to compete at the World
Finals!
Peak Our comprehensive program continues the tradition of excellence
Tales from a Small Town
By Bob Rehbach ‘46
I’ve often been asked by much younger folks,
“Isn’t living your whole life in a small town
(Irondequoit) boring?” Of course not, if you
live life to its fullest, every day.
The class of “46” doesn’t seem so long ago
now that remembering those days is a part
of daily conversation and the good things
that have made life really interesting.
Bob Rehbach and the Blacksmith House as it moves to the
Town Hall Campus from its original home on Ridge Road
near Culver.
As I left IHS, I continued to work at the “Red
and White” grocery across the street from
the “old school.” Working in retail was exciting
to me then, and I’ve only recently retired
from it.
In 1950-51 I took a sabbatical and made new
friends as I traveled with Uncle Sam’s US
Army to Korea. It truly was a great experience.
When I came home, my grocery manager’s
job awaited me. In 1960 I married
Anne Tetamore, Class of 49. She and children
Patsy, Douglas and I moved to Thornton
Road, and in 1962 son Randall was born.
After about 25 years in groceries, I made a
switch to Irondequoit Garden
Center/Fireplace Fashions on Hudson
Avenue, from which I recently retired after
almost 40 years.
In my spare time, I volunteer with the
American Red Cross at blood drives and
coordinate four blood drives annually at
Resurrection Lutheran Church, where I also
keep busy with the committee for social life
of the church.
Anne and I have been very active in the
Irondequoit Historical Society for some 30
years. I was never overly enthusiastic about
history, but felt an obligation to be a part of
the society. After all, my ancestry goes back
to 1832 in Irondequoit (then a part of
Brighton). I served as president of the society
for 13 of those years.
The society became an exciting part of our
lives when, in 1995, the salt box type house
built by Ransford Perrin ca 1839 was given to
the society and ultimately given to the town
and placed on the town hall campus.
It was the third move for this
structure. Finally Irondequoit
would have a museum – not
large, but interesting. We have
kind of adopted this little house
and volunteer there a lot.
Even more exciting was the
move of the “Cobblestone
Blacksmith Shop,” the oldest
known building in Irondequoit,
ca 1830, from East Ridge Road,
near Culver Road to the town hall
campus next to the salt box
house. These two structures were
originally next to each other on
Ridge Road.
The very fragile stone building was, after
about a seven year process, given to the
town. On April 2, 2008, the Matthews
Building Movers began the preparation for
this historic venture. Anne and I made it our
summer “hobby” to see this miracle happen.
Not knowing much about the engineering of
such a move, it became not only a fascination,
but a hands-on (sort of) education. I
wouldn’t say it was a breeze. Truly it was not!
About the move: Preparation is the key. The
building was built into the ground about
four feet. No footers, no interior beams, just
stone and mortar. Although they used
machinery, much shoveling and “wheelbarrowing”
had to be done. Holes were made
through the walls at ground level to insert
steel girders front to back. Picks, pry bars
and shovels were used – all hard work. Eight
of these beams were placed. Dollies were
used to move the 1800-pound beams, all
maneuvered by hand. A good share of the
labor was done without machinery, just like
fifty plus years ago. Some of the equipment
dates back to “grandpa.” It was astounding
to watch the precision of this work. It took
many days to complete the concrete base.
Two by twelves plus steel welded crossbeams
were built on the interior – keeping
walls safely secure – then the beams and
welded corners on the outside gave the support,
now inside and out.
Probably the most interesting part to
bystanders was watching the skill in building
the “cribbing” which kept the building
exactly in place and level. Again, by hand.
The structure was raised so that the 16
wheels could be rolled in underneath to the
back end on 50 ft., 7,000 lb. steel beams. The
truck would pull it from the front; everything
leveled with hydraulic jacks and cribbing.
Finally moving day arrived: Monday, July 14,
2008, about 9 a.m. A few challenges were
encountered in the move, but basically it
was smooth. The day was beautiful – the
crowd enthusiastic (some skeptical). There
were cheers when the 80 ton building was
off the platform and on its way west down
Ridge Rd. Many of the spectators followed
the whole move on foot as we did. It was a
slow and patient trip for this fragile landmark
building and an historic move.
It would take several weeks of preparation to
set the building on its present and permanent
home. At last, after about 50 years, the
Pioneer House and the Blacksmith Shop are
together again. On October 6th, the inside
foundation of stone was poured and the
