Highlights of 2010<br />

March<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> receives a five-year, $7.6 million Teacher Quality Partnership<br />

grant from the U.S. Department of Education to create a new<br />

“MATH-UP” program initiative. The program will prepare elementary<br />

teachers who are highly qualified to teach English language<br />

learners and students with special needs and to improve the<br />

mathematical understanding and performance of all students.<br />

Ambassador John L. Loeb, Jr. delivers the 41st Annual<br />

Herbert H. <strong>Lehman</strong> Memorial Lecture. A former U.S. ambassador to<br />

Denmark with a distinguished record of public service, Ambassador<br />

Loeb is the grand-nephew of Governor <strong>Lehman</strong>.<br />

April<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> dedicates its $16 million, state-ofthe-art<br />

Multimedia Center with a ceremony<br />

attended by <strong>Lehman</strong> and CUNY officials, representatives<br />

of major firms and funding agencies,<br />

and Deputy Bronx Borough President Aurelia<br />

Greene. The most advanced academic facility<br />

of its kind in the region, the Center is viewed as a major asset both<br />

for the <strong>College</strong> and the Bronx community.<br />

May<br />

Professor Emerita of English Dr. Alice Griffin pledges $100,000<br />

to establish an endowment for graduate fellowships in the Department<br />

of English at <strong>Lehman</strong>.<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> <strong>College</strong> student-athletes are honored for their participation<br />

in the 2009-2010 athletic campaign at the 58th annual<br />

Athletic Awards dinner.<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> awards 1,617 bachelor’s degrees and 850 master’s<br />

degrees at its Commencement ceremony.<br />

June<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> appoints Ronald M. Bergmann, First<br />

Deputy Commissioner of New York City’s Department<br />

of Information Technology and Telecommunications,<br />

as Vice President for Information Technology<br />

and Chief Information Officer, and Vincent<br />

W. Clark, a senior executive in the New York City<br />

Department of Education, as Vice President for<br />

Administration and Finance.<br />

July<br />

Dr. Marzie Jafari, acting dean of <strong>Lehman</strong>’s Division<br />

of Adult and Continuing Education and professor<br />

of urban and regional geography, is appointed<br />

the new dean of that division.<br />

September<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> launches a new Multimedia<br />

Journalism major, designed<br />

to prepare students to meet the<br />

challenges faced by twenty-firstcentury<br />

media professionals.<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> honors all those who have served<br />

in the U.S. Armed Forces with a day-long<br />

town hall meeting. The program includes<br />

one-on-one meetings with Veterans Affairs<br />

providers, a government job fair, and a<br />

book signing.<br />

October<br />

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Díaz gives a reading from his<br />

works before an overflow audience in the Lovinger Theatre.<br />

The <strong>Lehman</strong> Leadership Dinner,<br />

held at the New York Botanical<br />

Garden and sponsored by<br />

the Herbert H. <strong>Lehman</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

Foundation, raises more than<br />

$400,000 in cash and pledges<br />

for scholarships, fellowships, an<br />

endowment, and <strong>College</strong> needs.<br />

November<br />

<strong>Lehman</strong> <strong>College</strong> emerges in a survey as one of two master’s<br />

institutions—out of thirty-two—with the highest levels of job<br />

satisfaction among early-career faculty. The survey, conducted<br />

by Harvard University’s Collaborative on Academic Careers in<br />

Higher Education, evaluated key dimensions of the work experiences<br />

of pre-tenure faculty. <strong>Lehman</strong> was one of four institutions<br />

considered an “exemplar.”<br />
