Our highly specialised Lean Environment team has<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduced a leaner, greener and more efficient approach<br />
to clean<strong>in</strong>g that has a direct impact on your estate. This<br />
is based on Lean Six Sigma, the eng<strong>in</strong>eered process that<br />
is grounded on remov<strong>in</strong>g waste, whether that’s materials,<br />
resources, people, energy, or time. Lean Six Sigma also<br />
helps remove harmful environmental wastes.<br />
One of the ways <strong>in</strong> which we save time and resources<br />
is by process mapp<strong>in</strong>g ‘peaks and troughs’ <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
practices, gett<strong>in</strong>g rid of the downtime that occurs<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g the troughs. Downtime could <strong>in</strong>volve, for <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />
walk<strong>in</strong>g between wards or stores or go<strong>in</strong>g to another<br />
site on the same floor. Instead of just walk<strong>in</strong>g to another<br />
site our people clean along the way, thus turn<strong>in</strong>g that<br />
downtime <strong>in</strong>to another peak or productive time.<br />
We take CAD draw<strong>in</strong>gs of your build<strong>in</strong>gs and plot the<br />
best and most efficient routes. We do this by utilis<strong>in</strong>g<br />
our own bespoke lean software called Lean IT and<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g known productivities <strong>in</strong>to these new routes.<br />
It’s not enough just to create new routes us<strong>in</strong>g lean IT.<br />
Everyone on site who works for <strong>MITIE</strong> is tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the new<br />
techniques <strong>in</strong>volved. We have set up our own Lean Six<br />
Sigma Academy which tra<strong>in</strong>s our own employees <strong>in</strong> Lean<br />
Six Sigma, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g recognised Foundation, Yellow and<br />

In October 2012, <strong>MITIE</strong> acquired Enara, the fourth<br />
largest provider of homecare services. Work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
people of all ages, we provide a range of homecare<br />
services to people who need help and support due<br />
to illness, disability, <strong>in</strong>firmity or old-age. From prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />
meals and help<strong>in</strong>g people get out and about, to<br />
support<strong>in</strong>g more complex conditions such as learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
disabilities or dementia, our aim is to help people live a<br />
happier and more <strong>in</strong>dependent life <strong>in</strong> the comfort of<br />

With over 60 branches across the south of England and<br />
Wales, we work with Local Authorities and Primary Care<br />

What was the Trust look<strong>in</strong>g for?<br />
An experienced FM provider with<br />
dedicated and motivated employees<br />
to deliver improvements to the<br />
hospital’s overall care, environment<br />
and amenities. This <strong>in</strong>cluded significant<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the provision of patient,<br />
staff and hospitality cater<strong>in</strong>g services.<br />
How did we help?<br />
We carried out a full refurbishment of<br />
the staff and visitor restaurant, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a brand new servery, separate coffee<br />
shop and new seat<strong>in</strong>g area. As a result<br />
of our <strong>in</strong>novative re-design, we were<br />
also able to hand back much needed<br />
space for alternative use.<br />
Highlights:<br />

specialist and a dietician to add value<br />
to the exist<strong>in</strong>g cater<strong>in</strong>g offer;<br />
• We extended our current remit<br />
by tak<strong>in</strong>g full responsibility for the<br />
procurement of all patient meals;<br />
• We added all food and dr<strong>in</strong>k<br />
vend<strong>in</strong>g services and the supply of<br />
domestic consumables to our scope<br />
of service, creat<strong>in</strong>g significant cost<br />
sav<strong>in</strong>gs for the Trust.

We provide patient meals <strong>in</strong> a variety of service systems,<br />
from cook freeze and cook chill to steam, and create<br />
efficiencies through our electronic patient meal order<strong>in</strong>g<br />
system. This <strong>in</strong>novative approach allows us to capture<br />
accurate <strong>in</strong>formation for meal order<strong>in</strong>g and production<br />
schedules. As a result, we m<strong>in</strong>imise your food waste and<br />
maximise your cost sav<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
We also conduct comprehensive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes for<br />
our people <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the service of food at ward level.<br />
In retail cater<strong>in</strong>g, our experience ranges from vend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
mach<strong>in</strong>es or coffee carts with<strong>in</strong> an outpatients<br />
department, to full staff and visitor restaurant facilities<br />
with a wide-range of meals, snacks and beverages. Our<br />
retail offer<strong>in</strong>g is supported with active market<strong>in</strong>g plans<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g seasonal dish ideas, loyalty cards for Trust staff,<br />
special offers, customer workshops, theme days and<br />
