Páramo is a carbon
balanced company
If you walk, ride, cycle or run outdoors, you
have a vested interest in protecting it and
enjoying its landscapes, wildlife and flora,
and absorbing its moods while weathering
its weather!
Similarly, if you love to watch wildlife in the wild, to
photograph the great outdoors, are fascinated by its
landforms and geology, or work outside in any
capacity, you’ll no doubt appreciate outdoor gear
that not only keeps you comfortable but makes less
impact on the outdoors.
This year’s Páramo activity catalogues
September 2008
Special nature edition of our Hill,
Hike & More catalogue
Covers the whole gamut of ‘on the hill’ activities
and includes wildlife and bird watching, outdoor
photography and key environmental aspects.
October 2008 High Activity catalogue
Combines high altitude, high latitude and high
adrenaline adventures and activities – from
mountaineering and climbing, to mountain
biking and paddling, to adventure racing
and expeditions.
April 2009 Trek & Travel Catalogue
Looks at Active Travel ® and adventures all over
the globe – including UK summer walking and
backpacking as well as exotic destinations. With
gear for gap years, career breaks, working vacations
and all kinds of holidays.
This catalogue aims to capture the essence of the
relationship between the outdoor enthusiast, the
environment they enjoy and the gear they choose:
with contributions and feedback from wildlife watchers,
cameramen and photographers as well as from countryside
workers and walkers;
with news on some of the initiatives you’re involved in
through your Páramo purchases – from the Miquelina
Foundation and Aspira Fund to the World Land Trust and
Trees for Life;
with an appraisal of why Páramo offers a better alternative
for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds – with no compromise
necessary between outstanding performance and
safeguarding the environment;
with an insight into sister companies Nikwax and Directional
Textiles and how they help to complete the package.
Of course, all this is complemented by an overview of the
collection of Páramo garments you can choose from for
your outdoor activities – in an array of colours, maybe muted
shades designed to blend in with nature or brighter ones to
provide visibility when needed. We’ve tried to make it quick
and easy to home in on the colours you want by using the
the Kingfisher icon on the garment pages:
The Kingfisher icon denotes muted colours ideal
for wildlife watching, photography and country
pursuits in general
Sizes: In most cases
• our Men’s garments come in Small, Medium, Large,
Extra Large and XX Large
• our Ladies’ garments come in Extra Small (8-10), Small (10-12),
Medium (12-14), Large (14-16) and Extra Large (16-18)
• our Unisex garments often come in all 6 sizes from
Extra Small to XX Large
However, not all colours in a style come in all sizes so please
check the website for the most up-to-date information.
You can find a detailed size chart on the website in the
garment finder menu.
Our full up-to-date – and growing – range with all
available colours and sizes can always be viewed
on our new website at www.paramo.co.uk
Or visit any of our retailers to see the comprehensive
range ‘manual’, regularly updated, featuring the whole
range of our garments in detail.
If you’d rather save paper and receive your catalogue
electronically – along with occasional newsletters and
invitations to events in your area – then send your email
address to info@paramo.co.uk or log on via
www.paramo.co.uk
If you’d rather not receive a copy please tell us too,
please pass this copy to a friend or colleague who you think
WHY CHOOSE PÁRAMO? IT’S THE ‘NO COMPROMISE’ OUTDOOR GEAR
LEADERS IN COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE
Why is Páramo better?
How is that good for me?
Fabrics
Simple but very clever fabrics from
Nikwax Directional Textiles designed
specifically to ‘direct’ water to where
you need it to keep you comfortable
and dry.
This extends from the reversible, next
to-the-skin, stretchy Parameta T to the
ultimate outer all-weather protection
of Nikwax Analogy.
Nikwax Analogy fabric is based on
mammal fur – just as an otter or bear
keeps warm and dry in the very worst
of weather, the
fabric structure
moves water
away from you
and traps air to
keep you warm.
Designs
Páramo designs come from talking to
professionals who use kit outside all
day, every day.
Our designs make garments work
harder – often fulfilling more than one
function, and able to be worn
comfortably for more of the time.
Our philosophy is to create classic
style, working from functional and
practical advantages.
Páramo garments work well together
– they’re designed to be combined
Our fabrics work harder...
• Keeping the weather out
• Removing perspiration and
condensation more effectively
when you’re working hard
• Whatever the conditions – even in
high humidity when conventional
waterproofs give up
But feel better...
• Quieter – they’re soft, supple and
rustle-free
• Warmer and cosier – no hard,
crisp-packet feel, comfy enough to
wear all day or even to sleep in!
And last longer...
• No membranes or coatings to
break down
• Renewable with Nikwax aftercare
• Repairable with a needle and thread
• Puncture doesn’t compromise
performance
For example:
Hoods – that move with you, with
wired peaks, minutely adjustable
Ventilation – options to ventilate so
you don’t have to remove your
garments to stay comfortable
Pockets – in the sizes, shapes and
places to be most useful and hold
the things you need on the hill or in
the field
Articulation – to make movement
easy and unrestrained
Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Tavistock
Who says so?
John Aitchison Wildlife cameraman
Outdoor professionals
Rescue teams, outdoor instructors and
guides were among Páramo’s earliest
converts. It continues to be chosen by:
• 30+ teams within the UK Mountain
Rescue community
• Outdoor instructors and mountain
guides
• Outdoor workers including Natural
England, the Forestry Commission
and National Trust for Scotland
Nature professionals
Since discovering Páramo’s unique
fabric and design benefits, a whole
host of ‘nature professionals’ have
adopted Páramo for work and leisure:
• Cameramen and sound recordists
– including Mark Carwardine,
Philip Lovel & Stephen Moss
• Wildlife enthusiasts and
birdwatchers – including John
Aitchison
• Landscape and wildlife
photographers – including Joe
Cornish & Charlie Waite, Andy Rouse
& Ben Osborne
Páramo users and testers
• Páramo voted a top gear brand by
Ramblers’ Association members in
the walk magazine awards for
the last 3 years
• Which? Magazine named Páramo as
best waterproof jacket
• Outdoorsmagic.com readers voted
Páramo the number 1 clothing brand
ORIGINATORS IN ECO-FRIENDLINESS AND ETHICAL PRODUCTION
Why environmentally better? How ethical?
Páramo make garments designed NOT
to become obsolete. Buy Páramo and
enter a long term relationship with
gear that outlasts conventional outdoor
kit. When we talk about renewing and
recycling we don’t mean abandoning
your garment in a recycling bin and
buying a new one...
Renewable – we guarantee
performance and comfort that lasts.
There are no laminates or membranes
to break down, so garments can be
rejuvenated and re-waterproofed
indefinitely with eco-friendly Nikwax
Aftercare.
Repairable – Accidents do happen
and Páramo garments can be repaired
without compromising performance.
After all, you could stick pins all over a
Nikwax Analogy garment, take them
out and still be waterproof!
Recyclable – and if you want to
invest in a new Páramo, your garment
can lead a useful life when passed on
to a new appreciative owner, thanks
to the longevity Páramo enjoys
(and guarantees).
How else do we ‘give back’?
We endeavour to be environmentally
and ethically conscious in all sorts
of ways:
Reducing – inspired by our
Environmental Management Team we
continually seek to optimise and
decrease our use of materials and fuels.
Restoring – working with the World
Land Trust we contribute regularly
each year to protect existing vital
rainforest under threat and replant
new rainforest areas.
Replanting – for every Pájaro jacket
bought we donate a sapling to Trees
for Life to help reforestation of the
Caledonian forest.
Páramo’s production facility
established in 1992 in Bogotá,
Colombia is part of a valuable social
programme with the charitable
Miquelina Foundation. The little
sewing machine workshop set up
then by a nun has grown into an
efficient garment factory, providing
employment, training and practical
help for ‘at risk’ women wanting to
improve their lives.
Factory profits fund a housing project,
a virtual library, a kindergarten and a
canteen for local children.
Every Páramo Analogy garment sold
improves the quality of life of a South
American family:
1500 people live in the housing project
460 under 5s attend nursery daily
450 children eat daily at the canteen
400 women trained each year
400 people trained in the virtual library
17 houses built
When overspill requires, we have
carefully monitored production in
Vietnam which fulfils our ethical criteria,
manufacturing selected garment types.
Rebalancing – in partnership with
wildlife photographer Andy Rouse, we
set up The Aspira Fund using profits
from his Páramo range to donate
annually to diverse conservation and
research projects that often miss out in
funding initiatives – see The Aspira
Fund pages.
Redistributing – we’ve been able
to help charities like Remploy and
Fairbridge to take disabled and young
people out on the hill by donating kit.
And we work with World Emergency
Relief to provide garments for
refugees and the homeless elsewhere
in the world.
Every sapling helps...
Páramo’s charity partner, Trees for Life, has pledged to
plant quarter of a million trees by the end of 2009 as part
of the United Nations ‘Seven Billion Tree’ Campaign.
This follows the success of their tree planting drive in
2007, when the charity exceeded its target by planting
109,000 trees. The success was due in part to the
support of Páramo and customers who purchased a
Pájaro jacket, as some of the proceeds go directly to
plant saplings. Trees for Life’s Executive Director
Alan Watson Featherstone said, “We’re immensely
grateful for Páramo’s continued support. Every tree
planted helps secure the future of the Caledonian
Forest, an ancient and remarkable woodland.”
The charity’s vision is to restore the native,
biodiverse ecosystem to 600 sq miles in the
Scottish Highlands, advocating the return of
beaver, wild boar and lynx. It runs 45
Volunteer Conservation Weeks a year,
enabling people to take practical action that
is inspiring and makes a positive difference
to the environment. “The simple act of
planting a tree has far-reaching
consequences for the wellbeing of
both nature and humanity”,
said Alan.
Hummingbirds
on webcam!
Last year Páramo and Nikwax began working with
the World Land Trust to conserve forests for the future,
by committing to donate each year for the next
10 years. Our donations to WLT have contributed
towards the purchase of an 815 acre extension to the
Buenaventura Reserve in Ecuador. It will assist in
keeping large quantities of CO2 locked in the soil and
established plants, as well as protecting the habitats of
rare species of parakeet, tree frogs and other wildlife.
Our MD, Nick Brown, was invited along to witness
patron David Attenborough launch a WLT webcam
which can transport you into the heart of the
Ecuadorian rainforest within one of their reserves.
Visit www.wildlifefocus.org to marvel at some
32 species of hummingbird feeding.
The World Land Trust is an international conservation
charity (Reg. No. 1001291), based in Halesworth,
Suffolk. Since 1989, the WLT has been working to
preserve the world’s most biologically important and
threatened lands, helping to purchase and protect
over 350,000 acres of habitats rich in wildlife across
Asia, Central and South America and the UK. Sir David
Attenborough, patron of the WLT has stated,
“The World Land Trust’s policy of buying land is
the most direct and certain road to conservation.
It deserves the support of all who care about the
survival of the wild places of the world.”

EXPERIENCING ICELAND’S EXTREMES
“Iceland gets under your skin – the trick is not to
let its notoriously fickle weather get inside your
clothing! I’ve visited Iceland since 1999 but had
ambitions to go there since my teens. In Iceland
you can experience extremes of both landscape
and climate. Its landscape offers elemental
contrasts with frozen deserts, boiling mud pots,
volcanoes, incredible waterfalls and enormous
icecaps. The climate is unbelievably changeable –
an old saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather
now, wait five minutes – it’ll be worse!” In June
we experienced winds over 70 mph, torrential
rain, sea mist for days and glorious sunshine.
And this is their summer...
For me, weather is crucial for a landscape photographer.
I love what most people call poor weather – rain, snow,
freezing temperatures, fog. Weather plays a huge role in
the quality of light. Clouds filter sunlight, change its colour,
affect its quality (making it soft or bouncing light into
shadows) and the sky-scape is often integral to the wider
landscape image. A coating of water lends objects an
appealing gloss that deepens their colour (like a beautiful
pebble found on a beach whose beauty fades when dry).
Falling rain softens distant views. Snow simplifies the
landscape, leaching colour and bestowing a peculiar beauty.
So, to make the best images I must be out in all conditions,
often stationary for long periods to set up a shot or wait for
the light or clouds to be in the perfect position.
A highlight of my recent trip was returning to the west side
of Dettifoss. Most people visit the east to avoid an hour’s
journey on an atrocious road. But the effort is definitely
worthwhile. Spray from the waterfall can be seen 10km
away. Walking the last kilometre you feel the mist wetting
your face. Cresting the last ridge you’re assaulted by the
view and deafening roar – a visceral experience that
always makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise. There’s
nothing pretty about Dettifoss – the water is the colour of
concrete slurry rather than a delicate white veil – but it is
awesome, an overused word truly applicable to this
incredible waterfall. The statistics are impressive – 500m 3
of glacial meltwater from the largest icecap outside the
Poles make the 50m drop every second – but they can’t do
justice to the experience of standing on the gorge edge as
the water thunders over the fall and drenches you in icy
spray. I wore my Velez Adventure Smock to keep my upper
body dry. The large front chest pocket is useful for my meter
or other gear I need to keep dry but reach quickly. Foolishly
I opted for shorts, reasoning that skin is waterproof.
I probably should have worn my Cascada trousers as I
became chilled after half an hour standing in freezing spray.
Billy Connelly, misquoting John Ruskin, said “In Scotland,
there is no such thing as bad weather – only the wrong
clothes.” The same sentiment applies to wherever I make
images in the world – my Páramo gear always helps me cope
with all that Iceland (or any other climate) can throw at me.”
David Ward
David Ward led the Light & Land tour to Iceland in July
2008. Light & Land landscape and wildlife photographic
tours are renowned for the calibre of tutors as well
as the awe-inspiring locations they offer. David
Ward is one of Britain’s most accomplished
large format photographers. Visit
Long life & renewed vigour
“Old comfortable gear tells stories. All those trips, all those
adventures, all those memories. Just looking at a
well-worn item can conjure up a trip and take me back
into the wilds. Gear that lasts is environmentally friendly
too. Far better to renew and restore gear than replace it.
Páramo clothing does well here as it goes on working
year after year and can be reproofed and repaired without
affecting the performance.
I’ve had a pair of Alta trousers for over a decade now and
worn them on many trips from day walks in the
Cairngorms to long ski tours in Yellowstone National Park.
They’re a little faded now and have been repaired a couple
of times and washed and reproofed frequently. However
I expect them to last another decade at least. And that
pleases me, both because I hate waste and because they
have become one of my favourite pieces of gear and
I would be reluctant to replace them. Being a gear tester
for TGO magazine and for Backpacking Light.com means
I have the opportunity to try out many new products but
I haven’t found anything I’d rather wear than the Alta
trousers or that will last as long.” Chris Townsend
now re-christened the
Aspira trousers – see
Springs in Yellowstone
– quite challenging for
any clothing!
Dear Nick
It’s nine years now since I was trundling up to
John O’Groats, clad all over in Páramo. I’ll never forget
the wonder of the clothes in keeping me so dry.
I thought you’d be interested to know that the
original trousers you gave me which were worn every
day for the 15 weeks of the walk, and at least once a
week during all the nine years since then, are still in
perfect condition. The tiny tear where I got caught in
barbed wire before I even started the walk is still
there – and has got no bigger. And the waterproofing
is as good as ever. I think it’s amazing!
A life less ordinary
“My work takes me literally all over the world for more
than half the year. As a wildlife photographer and
broadcaster, I experience diverse conditions, from the
depths of a humid jungle in the Amazon presenting a new
BBC-TV series with Stephen Fry to the extremes of
Antarctica leading photographic tours.
Packing gets increasingly difficult with luggage restrictions,
and I have an awful lot of bulky camera kit. It’s important,
therefore, that I choose clothing that is perfect for the job
and takes up as little space as possible. Ubiquitous and
handy pockets for camera gear are essential, too. The right
clothing, obviously, adds enormously to the success of a
trip. I was, therefore, delighted to discover Páramo, which is
a one-stop shop for all my outdoor garments.
Being a marine specialist at heart, my default location is
out at sea. My annual treat is the best whale-watching
safari in the world – a boat-based trip to photograph the
grey whales that approach our boat, and much more, in
Baja California, Mexico. The conditions are surprisingly
varied, from rather cold and rough as we travel south from
San Diego, to hot and dry once we pass the Tropic of
Cancer. The Velez Smock is perfect for the wetter, cooler
first few days; and I can also easily squeeze in the light
Fuera Windproof Smock for when it’s warmer but still
windy. Performance base layers are obviously crucial, and I
find the Cambia long-sleeved baselayer invaluable.
When on more land-based trips – such as on anti-poaching
patrol in the tropics – I favour the Kea shirt. I was in the
Amazon recently filming the rare pink river dolphin under
water for the programme, and the Trek & Travel trousers were
great for walking through jungle undergrowth by the river.
Just a shame Páramo hasn’t moved into diving gear yet.”
Mark Carwardine
Wildlife photographer, broadcaster & zoologist

A FALKLANDS DISCOVERY - FINDINGS OF A CAMERAMAN
“For 20 years I’ve visited the most inhospitable corners of the Earth to film wildlife for the major TV
broadcasters. I know you won’t believe me if I tell you of all the blood, sweat and tears to get the
sequence. Yes, it is the best job in the world when it comes together and you can show millions of
people a unique wildlife moment.
You encounter huge climatic differences between locations.
I was gently incinerated filming Meerkats in the Kalahari
but three days later at a cool minus 35 filming the wolves
and Sami reindeer herders of Arctic Lapland. I love cold
weather filming and am drawn like a magnet to the High
Arctic. I’ve spent months on the ice in Greenland, Svalbard
and Franz Josef Land. But in truth it can be hell! You worry
so much about the cold when in fact overheating is often
the big issue. My perfect recipe for a mobile sauna –
tracking a mooching Polar Bear whilst carrying 30+kgs of
film gear, dressed like Michelin Man. When the Bear stops
for a nine-hour kip, you freeze.
In these conditions there is a real art to managing your
clothing. You have to stay dry. I’ve tried most fabrics,
man-made and natural, and sooner or later discovered
“I just need to say this... ...and it’s true!”
“Somehow when you buy a jacket of this nature there will
always be some little niggly thing that you grow to
tolerate and just put up with. It could be a bit of velcro
that is not quite long enough, a stud that is out of
alignment, a zip that is fiddly and that you cannot find and
a hood that just does not 'quite' give you that secure
feeling that you are all cosy and safe and protected inside.
Well, the other day I tried a Páramo jacket that is truly
faultless. It is perfection personified and I am in love with
it. I truly did not think that such jackets could exist.
Every strip of velcro, every button (wrong term I know),
every cord and zip is in just the place you need it to be.
WWW.PARAMO.CO.UK • 01892 786444
their shortcomings. Generally, they’re not versatile enough
for changing conditions and none breathe rapidly enough.
I thought I was asking too much – I’d always sacrifice
waterproofing for greater vapour transpiration.
I recently spent two months filming in the Falkland Islands
for the Tourist Board and RSPB. I was sceptical when the
Director of Tourism recommended Páramo to keep me
working in all conditions! I needn’t have worried. My Alta
Jacket, reversible Mountain Pull-On and Cascada Trousers
worked as hard as I did and kept me comfortable
throughout. I very often yomped 60+kgs of gear around the
remote outer islands – hot, exhausting work but to film Killer
Whales hunting Elephant Seals, or share a glorious white
beach crowded with penguins – boy, was it worth it!
I lived in my Páramos. Most of the time I didn’t even think
about them, as I was always comfortable and dry. I could
easily regulate the system with the venting zips. Summer in
the Falklands is pleasant but always windy. I was especially
impressed with the Cascada Trousers. They gave totally
unrestricted movement and, despite crawling about in rock
pools, kept me warm and dry. The greatest confirmation of
Páramo’s ‘Directionality’ came when I threw an immersion
survival suit over my Páramo to film Albatross off the stern
of a huge fishing vessel. To say I was a ‘Sweaty Betty’ would
be an understatement. When I slithered out of the suit, I was
surprised to see great pools of ‘liquid’ caught on the outside
of my Páramos unable to escape past the impermeable suit.
The Falkland Islands proved one of the best wildlife locations
that I have visited. My Páramo clothing exceeded even my
demanding standards. I still wear it every morning in the UK,
whilst outdoor fitness training for the next job – I can’t wait
to take my Páramos North.”
Philip Lovel
It is truly a great pleasure to put on and I am finding that I am
putting it on when the weather is in fact so mild that I do not
really need it, but put it on for the sheer pleasure of wearing it!
If you think I am going over the top then so be it... ...the fact
remains that I cannot commend this piece of clothing enough.
I have zillions of emails to write like we all do but I just HAD
to tell you that this jacket is for me the best I have ever
known... ...and I have known a few over 40 odd years.
So Bravo to you and the company and obviously the man
behind these staggeringly high class all weather jackets.“
Charlie Waite
“As a farmer and TV presenter, I often wear my 3rd
Element Jacket or Velez Adventure Smock to keep me
warm and dry. The variety of presenting for BBC’s
Countryfile can mean doing anything from walking in
the Lake District, to mountain biking in Glencoe or
riding a horse across Exmoor. Whatever the event, one
minute there is lots of activity, the next I’m standing
around waiting for the next shot. The Páramo jackets
work brilliantly, to breathe when I am active, keep me
warm when standing around and dry when the sky
opens on me. Brilliant!”
A pioneering carbon conservation scheme,
developed by National Trust for Scotland (NTS)
and Páramo Premier Retailer, C-N-Do Scotland,
celebrates its first year on the island of Arran.
The peat in Scotland’s soils is one of the most significant
peat bog carbon stores in the world. If it dries out, carbon is
released into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
To conserve both soil and carbon, NTS and C-N-Do Scotland
established its Carbon Conservation Scheme in January 2007
with a web-based appeal for donations.
Work commenced in August 2007 at NTS Goatfell property,
with volunteers damming drains on the damaged upland
peat bog in Coire a’ Bhradhain.
Kate Sampson, NTS Senior Ranger on Arran, commented:
“The NTS volunteers made real progress with controlling water,
stopping the peat drying out, recreating boggy conditions,
and promoting species like sphagnum mosses, sundews and
bog cotton grass. The scheme with C-N-Do has been integral,
raising awareness as well as funds, and encouraging
individuals and businesses to act on their carbon footprint.”
Contribute to the project, as an individual or a business,
and reduce the carbon impact of your energy costs.
PÁRAMO DIRECTIONAL WATERPROOFS
The Páramo approach to staying warm and dry in the outdoors is inspired by nature. In the same
way that seals, otters and bears remain warm and comfortable in extreme conditions, Páramo
Directional Waterproof garments mimic the action of animal fur and push liquid outwards.
Nikwax Analogy fabric
does not have membranes
or coatings; instead it is
full of ‘holes’ that let air
and moisture pass through allowing
greater efficiency in removing excess
moisture vapour and condensation.
These are the most breathable
waterproofs – no more clamminess!
By removing moisture from next to your
skin you remain dry and comfortable
whether you are working hard or standing
still. And like a mammal fleece, Nikwax
Analogy fabric stands up to the rigours of
outdoor life day after day, year after year.
“For photography, concentration is aided if
you’re comfortable and my Pájaro jacket
ticks all the boxes. I’ve worn it in extreme
cold, gale force winds, driving rain and it
performs impeccably. All from a garment
that is light, comfortable and silent to wear.
Quite simply the best piece of outdoor
clothing it has been my pleasure to own.“
We’ve seen mammals grow a thicker winter coat
WHERE CAN I BUY PÁRAMO?
Consult a specialist retailer with
a nature focus
This catalogue is well and truly a
celebration of nature – not all our
retailers have the space to display and
stock the whole Páramo range and
certain Páramo retailers can offer a
particular interest in and commitment
to such ‘country pursuits’ – wildlife
spotting, bird watching, outdoor
photography, conservation activities,
fieldwork or research.
So we’ve worked with these retailers
around the country to develop some
‘Páramo nature specialists’ – ranging
for example from our very own flagship
Páramo store in London’s Covent
Garden to Cley Spy situated in a
conservation area in the wilds of Norfolk,
from Focus Optics, a green oasis in the
“Another disappointing
morning seemed
inevitable as heavy
grey clouds hurried
across the dawn sky pursued by a cold
autumnal north westerly at Steel Rigg
on Hadrian’s Wall. Patience was
eventually rewarded when the cloud
thinned as the sun cleared the horizon,
motivating the cattle to stir. I noted the
sequence of events; stand up, stand
still for a few seconds, relieve oneself,
walk away. Once the graduated filters
were in place and composition and
exposure determined, it was a case of
waiting for a cow to rise. Timing had
to be spot on; depth of field
necessitated an exposure of up to four seconds, about the time the cow
stood relatively motionless. Once the cow stood the shutter was opened – it
closed just as the cow was about to relieve itself. A benefit of shooting into the sun
was the “rim lighting” illuminating the cow’s coat, lifting it from the background.
A few years ago an ad convinced me to buy a Páramo jacket. I was so impressed
that I now have Páramo clothing for all seasons and weather. In autumn,
outdoor clothing has to cope with big temperature variations between dawn,
midday and dusk. In winter, it needs to be suitable for strenuous walking with
a heavy rucksack then waiting for the right conditions for photography. Two
immensely useful items in these situations are the insulating Torres Smock and
Torres Gilet. In spite of their necessary bulk when worn, they can be compressed
to take up little room in a crowded rucksack.
I’m a big person; Paramo’s range of clothing and sizes allows me to easily find
the outdoor clothing I need.”
THE ASPIRA FUND
Simple but effective – the Aspira Fund was set up by Páramo with Andy Rouse
Wildlife Photography in 2006 to benefit small charities and research projects which
often get bypassed by major funding initiatives.
Proceeds from the sale of every Andy Rouse limited edition garment go straight into the Aspira Fund,
helped along by contributions from Andy Rouse events, books, prints and calendars.
So far, three projects have been delighted to benefit from the Fund:
Clever cameras and capercaillie
Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) manages biodiversity in Scotland’s forests and one key species is the
capercaillie – the largest grouse in the world! Huge efforts are being made to improve habitat for capercaillie
across 35,000 hectares of the National Forest Estate. However, as FCS Ecologist Kenny Kortland, explains:
“It’s important to ensure that this work for capercaillie benefits as many species as possible and isn’t detrimental
to other protected species. This can be difficult when we don’t know if certain species are even present!”
To help Kenny, the Aspira Fund helped purchase four camera traps to survey forests for shy mammals such
as wildcats and badgers. “If we know these species are present, we can include them in our habitat
management plans,” said Kenny. “The cameras in the forest take a picture every time an animal walks
through an infrared beam. They will hugely improve our knowledge of mammals in our capercaillie forests
and help me do a better job. I’m very grateful to Páramo, Andy Rouse and Aspira Fund customers for
providing this generous grant.”
Wells for tigers
In March, emails flew
across the ether between
Andy, photographing
tigers in India, and the
Páramo office in East
Sussex, as Andy detailed
exactly why the tigers in
Ranthambore National
Park needed money from
the Aspira Fund right then! He explained that one huge
area of Ranthambore is off limits to tourists but has a very
dense population of tigers. Great – except that this area is
prone to water shortages and for the hottest three months
of the year is dry. The tigers there are forced to roam
outside the park for water, putting them into potentially
fatal conflict with the local population.
Andy’s friend, Dicky Singh, a local conservationist and great
wildlife photographer, had already funded 5 boreholes to
create natural waterholes. Andy had the opportunity to
provide a further permanent water source for the local tiger
population – so we funded the digging of the borehole and
landscaping of the waterhole from the Aspira Fund.
Andy reported back enthusiastically “Dicky and I switched
on the first jet of water and that night a male tiger came to
drink. It made us feel so good and showed that you don’t
need a large amount of money to make a difference, just a
willingness to protect and conserve.”
WWW.PARAMO.CO.UK • 01892 786444
Towards a new centre for rYico
The Rwandan Youth Information Community Organisation
was founded in 2003 to support vulnerable young people
through the Centre Marembo in Kigali. Those helped
include youngsters orphaned or in difficult conditions
following the 1994 genocide. While tracking the
endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda last year, Andy
was impressed by the incredibly friendly and resilient
people and we decided to contribute to local community
projects in this vulnerable area in order to help the people
as well as the wildlife.
The Aspira Fund contribution came at a vital time as
the Centre Marembo recently had to move into a new
building as the lease on the old premises expired
– and have now launched an appeal to build their own
purpose-built building.
The Aspira Fund is an initiative that Andy Rouse
is passionate about...
”As a professional wildlife photographer, I’m privileged
to have been to some of the most exciting natural places
in the world and witnessed the most miraculous wonders
of nature. It’s opened my eyes to the dangers the
world’s wildlife is currently facing and highlighted
the determination of those in the conservation and
environmental fields to do something about it. My work
depends on the vital efforts of such organisations and it
is my pleasure to work with Páramo to give a little back
– with The Aspira Fund.”
Andy Rouse is one of the
most well-respected
wildlife photographers
from the UK. His images
are famed for showing
dramatic action of
some of the globe’s
most dangerous and
inaccessible creatures.
Andy has captured
images in the most
extreme locations from
the Arctic to Antarctic,
Alaska to Asia.
Andy, seeking clothing to take him to the world’s
most inaccessible places and extreme climates, was
recommended to try the Páramo Directional Clothing
System. After testing the garments in Alaska, the
Falklands and Antarctica, he suggested refining the
design of three specific garments to suit the needs of
outdoor photographers like himself.
The ARWP range offers all the benefits of the unique
Nikwax Directional fabrics that Páramo use, plus Páramo’s
intelligent design features, but with the added benefit of
Andy’s input as an ‘extreme’ outdoor photographer.
All sales directly benefit The Aspira Fund. Visit
Nikwax Waterproofing – Easier, Safer, Drier...
Why is Nikwax better for me, my gear and
the environment?
On all Nikwax WaterBased products you’ll see “No
propellant gases, non toxic, environmentally safe. Not
tested on animals. Does not contain fluorocarbons”.
WaterBased
Nikwax uses water to ‘carry’ the waterproofing
ingredient – anywhere water can get, so can the
waterproofing. Using water is more effective, and
means Nikwax doesn’t use harmful chemical solvents
or propellant gases. Nikwax products are safe for
home users and the environment, reducing global
warming and ozone depletion. They’re effective in a
cool 30°C wash and don’t need a high temperature
treatment to activate the waterproofing.
No persistent fluorocarbons
Fluorocarbon-based aftercare is potentially hazardous
