UP AND STAYING UP
Michael Sholly
The very size of the VAFA poses operational
challenges but the reward is more good news stories.
There would have been plenty of celebrations around
the city on the weekend but none bigger than at Old
Carey. Last Saturday’s semi-final was clearly the
biggest game in the club’s 56 year history and to claim
a spot in Premier for the very first time is a just reward
for the magnificent work done by all the players and
administrators.
I was fortunate to spend most of the afternoon
surrounded by the Carey folk and there was a
great deal of delight as they gradually gained the
ascendency. Whilst they have achieved their first
priority, a flag gives a club that much more confidence
as they venture into uncharted waters.
What struck me most about Old Carey is that the
desire to reach Premier is not their end goal. Behind
the scenes there is already plenty of planning and
building on the success of this year into a bigger
and better model for 2011. If the size of lunches has
anything to do with it then they are on a winner, as
they had over 300 diners at a recent game when they
established a Sporting Hall of Fame.
Eleven of the twelve positions for promotion have
been settled. While all of these clubs will have one
eye firmly fixed on the premiership battle this week,
the other must be on preparing for next year. Promoted
clubs come from a winning culture that all players
share. Obviously, retaining those players is the best
start to next season’s program.
It can’t be absolutely quantified on how much harder
it is to play in a higher section, but judging by how
Promoted to Lasted One year Lasted Two years
Premier C 7 5
Division 1 6 6
Division 2 12 5
many clubs who struggle when promoted, list-building
is as necessary as retention.
The table below shows this starkly. In the eleven years
since the beginning of the century, these are the fates
of the teams who have been promoted.
According to these statistics the biggest jump is into
Premier – Old Carey be warned!
Last weekend’s matches were heavily affected by
the huge amounts of rainfall and after a month of
continuous rain, the grounds turned into mud. Whilst
this may have been an issue for the players, it made
for interesting viewing. Many players and umpires
had never experienced football in those conditions
and maybe those who were able to remain focus rather
than being distracted by external influences were the
ones who held sway.
Congratulations to all teams who successfully won
promotion on the weekend. Old Carey, Beaumaris,
Monash Blues, Old Paradians, St John’s and Mt
Lilydale will all be up a section. Good luck to these
teams on the weekend with four getting the opportunity
to avenge their second semi final loss.
The other final on the weekend saw Collegians win
the right to play in the Premier Section Grand Final.
There was little between them and Old Xaverians
all day but a late goal to Collegians captain, Chris
Blumfield got them over the line.
The heavy conditions may have an effect on the Old
Xavs players as they back up this weekend to play
De La. The matches between these clubs over the last
two seasons have been epic affairs, played in front of
huge crowds, and living up to the hype. We expect
no different this week. Both may have
preferred this rivalry to be played
out next week, but this is now not
an option. Sunday will be an intense
afternoon for the devotees of each
club, who will find no joy in defeat
or solace in their club’s magnificent
season. For them, and for the players
I’m sure, losing is unthinkable.
PREMIER
LIONS IN WAITING.
Michael Fitzgerald
If it wasn’t obvious to all, it is now. The Lions
are a very good team and they are roaring. They
survived a furious beginning from Xavs, then
barged their way into the game like a gatecrasher
at a twenty-first, and then kept things tight the
rest of the way. In the end, they beat Xavs for the
fourth time in a row. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a
gut wrenching affair from go to whoah!
In a tension packed game on a field made muddy
by Melbourne’s torrential early spring, players
fought for every yard and system went out the
door. Hard at the ball, hard at the contest were
the only available options. Neither team gave an
inch and neither team managed to establish any
significant advantage. The clock rolled on as both
teams sought the defining moment.
When that moment came at 22:25 in the last,
Trent Zimbachs put Chris Blumfield clear with
a slick handball and the skipper rammed it home
to put the Purples in front to stay. Given the
appalling condition of the field and the heavy
ball, even the greatest Red ‘n’ Black optimist
would have realised there was no bullet left in
the chamber. Xavs had their chances to win it,
but too often their forward thrusts amounted to
zero when even a minor score might have been
valuable. Three times in the tense final term they
had set shots from the arc, albeit from difficult
spots. By contrast, James Kondarovswkis and
Andrew Scott twice nailed set shots at important
stages.
The result might have been different had James
Jorgensen not played another blinder. The big
broad left-footer, whose father wore red and
black at school, seems to save his best for games
against Xavs, patrolling the backline as if he
owns it, filling space, taking marks, launching
forward offensives. He’s now played seventeen
games this season. The two he missed, the Lions
lost.
As predicted, it was a game where defensive
pressure held sway most of the afternoon, but
when the breakouts came, Collegians made them
count a bit more. There was little between the
teams and there will be little between them if
they meet again next week.
That, of course, is a big if.
TODAY: Xaverians must face De La Salle,
brilliant, rested and aggressive. Their first semifinal
win over Uni Blues showed them at their
best, albeit on a much firmer track than last
week’s combatants endured.
There will be battles waged on several fronts on
Sunday. Xaverians’ defence is rock solid and will
need to be to hold the rampaging forward setup
it will face. Pickett, Oakley, Moore, Duggan,
Semmel and Roberts against Wynne, Noonan,
Lynch, Biddlecombe, Dimattina and Rogerson.
The sparks will fly there. Xavs will get first hand
on the ball with John Shaw, who was the X Men’s
best last week, and Cam Purss the best ruck
combo going around. Then it’s the smaller men:
Lowe, Shields, Gotch and Pollard against Agius,
Allan, Ball, and Mercuri. On the wings, Colbert
and Prowse versus Williams and Collins. If we
suppose an even contest across those lines, then
the attention turns to the Red ‘n’ Blacks’ forward
half. Matt Handley destroyed DLS in last year’s
second semi final and must play another monster
game here. His season has been interrupted twice
through injury, but if he is on, there’s no greater
threat in VAFA football. He’ll need help from
the men around him to get a decent score on the
board.
Then there are the intangibles. I believe De La
has more class, but the Xavs are loaded with grit.
They were below their best at Waverley Park but
lost only narrowly. They ran and tackled De La
into the ground at Toorak Park in their best win of
the season. Both teams are coached by fellos with
sharp football minds, able to spot a weakness
quickly and pull a move to capitalise on it. Both
2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010

will have hordes of supporters who will not
countenance a loss. Expectations are sky-high in
the Blue and Gold camp, the lid long ago blown
off. Then again, expectations are always high
among the Xaverians, who have been treated to
unparalleled success over the past decade and a
half.
So who wins? Again, it may come down to
conditions. The ground should be better than
last week’s bog, but perhaps not firm enough for
DLS to unleash its power running to maximum
effect. Their form a fortnight ago was irresistible
but it wasn’t so hot when they played Uni Blues
on a heavy Elsternwick a few weeks ago. They
struggled to hit targets and were well beaten.
This week, I can see Xavs closing them down to a
more manageable level. The Red ‘n’ Blacks never
surrender sovereignty over Casa VAFA without a
massive fight and have many times found ways to
win the near impossible. Despite all this history, I
suspect this is De La’s time and that they will do
enough to win. If they do, they will surely know
they’ve earned it, as the Xaverians’ never gift
grand final spots to anyone.
PREMIER B
PENSIVE PANTHERS PREPARE FOR PREMIERSHIP,
AND PREMIER SECTION
Fraser Cameron
Oh, what a trying day it was for all and sundry
who braved the miserable conditions and rolled
into HQ to witness history in the making.
Frankly, when the final siren sounded at 4.48
pm at a wet, soggy and testing Elsternwick
Park, the anticipated scenes of jubilation in the
Carey camp were somewhat muted given the
achievement of their chosen 22 in defeating a
gallant Old Haileybury and earning the club’s
first ever Premier ticket for 2011.
From the dank dark depths of G section back in
1994, the Old Carey giant slowly awoke over the
next decade, returning to fielding a reserves side
in the late 1990s and then establishing a foothold
in E section before the turn of the millennium.
However last Saturday bore final fruit, which had
started most likely in the seeds first sown in the
U19 flags of 2003 and 2004, and then nurtured
further through the return of prodigal sons from
other VAFA and suburban football clubs. No
doubt they will be primed to give things a real
crack in their debut Premier Section season in
2011, but there’s the small matter of a Premier
B title to fight for first. Let’s go to the game
now…..
The weather gods were comparatively kind to
the second semi-finalists given the predicted
snow, sleet, gale-force winds and torrential rain
which beset other parts of our great state. Still,
nothing is ever clam and collected at HQ and
with the solid, slightly heavier than usual breeze
favouring the southern scoreboard end, and the
odd hailstorm lurking, the Bloods kicked with
the obvious advantage and set about establishing
a 1 st innings lead. The ground itself was heaving
under the massive load it’s taken over the past 3
weekends, and it resembled the Lakeside Oval in
those days when Lou Richards and Peter Landy
used to call the Army Reserve Cup Sunday fixture
after World of Sport. This looked like playing
into the Bloods’ hands as they’d selected a side
with plenty of run, and would look to carry, parry,
push, prod and urge the ball forward in whatever
manner possible, but almost exclusively at
ground level.
As the game commenced, it was clear the
faithful from Old Carey were there in full voice,
and outnumber the Bloods fans by 3 to 1 at
least. The clear highlight of the first term was
a slashing running goal off half forward from
Sam Langford-Jones who found space and was
measured in ramming home a big major to get
his side into it ‘up to their necks’. Still, once the
huddles converged you couldn’t help but feel the
Carey lads had done pretty well in slowing the
game down and now looked to press home an
advantage.
David Lappage urged his boys to work hard into
the wind and try to maintain possession, and to
this end they were fantastic until half-way through
the term. It was at this point that the Carey bigguns
in Al Parton, Grant Baldwin and Tom Evans
all started to fire as Andrew Willingham made
the most of his ruck dominance at the stoppages.
Jarrod Reid chimed in and Luke Maslin managed
to find space to create. By the time Carey had
slammed on six goals to one the onlooking Uni
Blacks’ brains trust were already making plans
for a showdown with the Bloods!
Brett Voss wouldn’t let his charges fall by the
wayside as easily as Carey would have hoped
and he kept things interesting as Tom Chisholm,
Dave Combden and Mick Stowe worked hard
further upfield. Importantly, Laz Siapantas and
Tony Brown were well blanketed by the Carey
defenders, and this was critical to keeping the
Carey lead to over 2 goals at the final change.
Everything was in the Panthers’ keeping provided
they continued to play disciplined, dour footy
and minimised their risks and errors. As Trevor
Rowe pointed, the game was there for the taking,
4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010

and they simply had to maintain their work rate
and use the ball cleverly. To their credit, the boys
followed instructions to the letter and a few ‘junk
time’ goals were the result of the Bloods taking
their foot off the pedal realising they had another
game to prepare for next week.
Which takes us now to the toughest match of
any VAFA season, the preliminary final. For the
victor the spoils of promotion and a grand final
to play, for the vanquished a summer of regret,
going back to square 1, and basically thinking
everything was a waste….but let’s not talk gloom
and doom here, there are some salivating matchups
to look forward to, and I’m thinking the
Blacks will fancy their chances after a week off.
During the regular season, the Students pinched
the points on both occasions, and I daresay if
their backline can perform as well as they did
two weeks ago, it will go a long way to achieving
an unlikely victory and promotion which seemed
a pipe-dream going into round 18. Dubois on
Ford/Mason looks good to me, with Walsh or
Guthrie to rotate on Voss. At the other end, I’d
expect Bolton to return if there’s any chance and
this would provide enormous support for Foster,
Lacey and Gaylor. I’m not sure if the Bloods
defenders will find it a task too hard to cover the
plethora of options that Marc Woolnough has at
his disposal, particularly ground level crumbers.
Still, it all comes down to supply and here’s where
I feel Blacks have an edge with a shade better
quality run and delivery to the Bloods. If it’s a
PREMIER C
RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW
Di Langton
There’s a definite symmetry today as we watch the
season’s top two place-getters, barely anything
between them, duke it out one last time. They
finished one-all in the home and away series,
Beaumaris took the minor premiership, Caulfield
took the second semi: but every result before today
is meaningless and quite frankly, cold comfort if
it can’t be repeated to your liking. Both sides are
elevated to Premier B next year, but do you place
greater importance on promotion or actually
winning the flag? It’s not the bragging rights, or
the silverware or the giant felt triangle you add to
your clubroom bunting (although all of these are
pretty special). It’s the team - on the park and off
- that is forever forged in the sweat and mud and
blood it took to get there. It’s the glory you wrap
yourselves in; it’s the history you create for your
club. Losers can suit themselves. No doubt both
clubs will give the B-boys a run for their money
and Fraser plenty of fodder; but this scribe will
still cast an eye on them from time to time – as
you would a precocious child who has outgrown
you. In the meantime the prodigal son returns,
MHSOB, plus his crook mate Old Essendon. But
first things first. Right here, right now, between
the Fields and the Sharks, we find out the team
that won’t yield; the team that refuses to accept
promotion as a consolation to losing. Who really
holds supremacy in Premier C?
Preliminary Final Review
Beaumaris had the double chance chip up their
sleeve and boy did they cash in that sucker,
surviving a late spurt from AJAX in a heartstopping
finish to win by four points. The Jackas
went into the game “chock full of confidence”
according to one club stalwart, and me with
them for that matter. After their decisive win
over Old Camberwell they looked to be in far
stronger form. It didn’t go that way, the Sharks
took early advantage in the heavy conditions,
taking a 21 point lead into the main break as
rain steadily fell. The third was a tussle between
half back lines; the fourth a lockdown after two
early Jacka goals cut the margin to 6 points with
a serious sniff. Neither side could manage a goal
in the final 15 minutes, the onslaught withstood
by a courageous Beaumaris side and AJAX are
left to rue the poor conversion that has plagued
them throughout the year. Eugeni Routman
was outstanding for the Jackas, big man Jarrod
White toiled hard around the ground and Jason
Seidl booted three. For the winners Will Murton
(3) showed four quarters of his exciting brand
of football, while the experience of Sean Coote
at half back, Luke McNicholas in the ruck and
Tim Collins (who held Jason Ritterman in the
first half), were telling factors in the win.
Grand Final Preview
Weather, ground conditions and switched days
have been much-talked of this finals series, yet
when these two met in the second semi, it was a
traditional sunny Saturday arvo with not a breath
of wind across the loveliest deck we’d seen all
year. Football was the feature act, a fast-moving,
roller coaster of a game. Last week’s rain suited
Beaumaris’ smaller fleet far better, so make what
you will of today’s conditions.
McNicholas has peaked for finals and gives the
Sharks versatility in the ruck and up forward,
and takes the pressure off danger player Coote,
leaving him to shore up CHB. There are some
big engines amongst their raft of small running
forwards (Dean, Petering, Murton etc) who
are creative and quick to the ball but three finals
may be taking a toll on the legs. Captain Haynes
is under a cloud, as is Caulfield’s Sinclair, but
Daly at CHF works well in tandem with Slevison
forward and Meredith alternating the ruck and
forward pocket. The real danger for Beauy is the
impetus Caulfield gets from their running backs,
namely Winter, Hyland and Perkins on the
wing. Certainly, they look a winning machine and
last year’s nightmare would be neatly exorcised
by a flag. Oh, but I’m loathe to tip against Beauy
again, they have a beautifully balanced team plus
a big dose of x-factor and will rise to the occasion
in front of the cheering tribes at Trevor Barker.
The Fields have a significant psychological
advantage with their reserves playing the early
game, and if the rain holds off, I think we’ll see
another arm-wrestle that goes right down to the
wire.
Prediction: Caulfield Grammarians by 5 points.
In overtime.
Big Night Out: Monday’s VAFA Awards night
will see the presentation of the L.S. Zachariah
Best and Fairest Medal for 2010 with a number
of likely vote-getters, including Tim Allen from
Ormond who is also in contention for the Rising
Star Award. Now that would be some double!
Premier C Team of the Year
Thanks to those who sent through considered
and balanced nominations of your own players
…and those you covet! The TOTY is obviously
subjective, and I was sometimes torn between
the consistent and the enigmatic. Surely a true
representation has some of both, and therefore
some players have missed the cut by the barest of
margins. Next year fellas.
DIVISION 1
NORTH OLD BOYS GROUND INTO MURPHY’S MUD
Rees Quilford
With a ticket for the last tango up for grabs,
Monash and North Old Boys/St Pats traveled out
to the St Bernard’s mud quarry for the D1 prelim.
What they found was a howling wind, mud and
spasmodic rain. The wind was blowing straight
down P.B Murphy Oval and Monash had first use
of it.
Conditions were always going to make life
difficult but it was the Blues who had the run of it
early. Their ability to get numbers to the contest
and win the one-on-ones saw play confined to
their forward half. It wasn’t long before their mod
squad, who had set up camp on the far hill, were
given something to cheer about. Tom Craven
capped off a stellar week (he became a first
time father midweek) by kicking the first at the
four-minute mark. While the Blues peppered the
sticks, their inability to convert was a worry for
their fans. At one point, VAFA officials mistook
the baying coming from behind the camera on the
grandstand balcony for a fallen mid-week hurdler
and called for the vet and rifle.
With Matt Keown and Michael Layley keeping
their side in it and with the likes of Lachlan
Ezard providing good run out of defense NOBs
looked to switch and run. It worked to a degree
but they continually broke down across half
forward. Sam Baring had the job minding NOBs
full-forward Todd Paterson but with Blues
coach Tim Powell opting for an extra man back,
he wasn’t short on assistance. Matt Coe was in
everything, zoning off to take a numerous telling
grabs and was equality effective on the deck with
some deft touches and even a crucial smother.
Monash finally managed to capitalise on their
ascendency late in the term. Smart play from
Craven saw him square up from the boundary
and find old-stager Brock MacKenzie on the fat
side who. He converted from 20m. The helmet
wearing pocket rocket Mark Frater capped off
a fine first term contribution with a model wet
weather rovers goal.
The quarter time siren couldn’t have come quick
enough for NOBs coach Richard Peoples.
Clearly unimpressed with his charges lackluster
and scoreless performance he questioned their
appetite and pleaded for greater accountability
and more run. A valuable give and get Monash
goal from Frater into the wind wasn’t the start
NOBs were looking for but going man-on-man
they rallied thereafter. The sun peaked through
but with the wind showing no sign of abating
the ball spent much of the term in the NOB/SP
forward half. Monash persisted with an extra
man back but for a 10-minute period NOBs
threatened. Their skipper Harwood showed
the way and with Patterson finding a bit of
ball they looked dangerous but their inability
convert proved costly. Harwood, Brady and
Patterson all missed gettable shots on goal and
a disappointing return of four behinds saw them
25-points in arrears at the main change.
Andrew Hickey started the second half in style
for the Blues with a classy running goal from the
out wide. Finding the going hard into the breeze,
nothing seemed to be going right for NOBs. A
clearing defense kick off the boot of Layley
seemed destined for the chest of a teammate
before it was intercepted midair by a seagull. It
told the story of the day. When a Monash set shot
from 40m cleared the pack at the midway point
of the term the lead was out to six goals. There
were a couple of positive signs for NOBs, some
convincing running and quick ball movement
brought the grey nomad Scott Sleep into the game.
A number of classy touches culminated NOBs
first major. Taking possession at half forward
Sleep drew three defenders before dishing off
over the top to Pete Carnovale who ran into an
open goal. But that was pretty much all she wrote
for NOBs. Two separate acts of desperation
from Monash players epitomised their desire.
Finding himself camped under a hospital ball
deep in defense Daniel Brogden never looked
like squibbing it and got himself pole-axed for
8 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010

the trouble. A bit of push and shove ensued but he
dusted himself off and gingerly continued about
his business. A couple of minutes later Hickey
saved a certain goal, earning a free kick with a
desperate come from behind tackle on a North
Old Boy opponent 15m out. Monash piled on the
next four goals and effectively ended any hope
for the boys from Brunswick.
The heavens opened again at the beginning of the
final term. Chris Hosley booted NOBs second
but the Blues continued to dictate play, three final
term goals saw them run out deserved 67-point
victors. The win secures Monash promotion back
to Premier C but more importantly gives them
another crack at Werribee.
The grand final will be the third time the two
sides have faced off in a month. Monash will
have taken plenty of confidence from their much
improved effort a fortnight ago. They will again
look to test the Bees with their height and will
definitely need to kick straight again but it’s hard
to see Werribee, with its depth and discipline, not
getting the cup. Werribee by 18 points.
DIVISION 2
PARADIANS GET IT DONE
James Coyne
Old Paradians will be joining Banyule in Division
1 next year thanks to maintaining the buffer they
earned in the first term to snare a 27-point victory
over Glen Eira. The Raiders had jumped the
Saints early on and realistically could have been a
lot further in front at quarter time, if it wasn’t for
solid Eira defence and inconsistent kicking from
the Raider forwards. Trailing by the 18 points at the
first change, Glen Eira went about scraping their
way back into the contest of the back of Stefan
Krull and Alex Tsirogiannis and while the quarter
time margin still stood at the long break, there were
positive signs for the team trailing. The start of the
second half was a slow slog, with poor kicking due
to the weather nullifying either teams’ attacking
thrusts at advantage but the 18-point margin slid out
to 25 again in favour of Old Paradians going into the
final quarter. Brett Mcallister, Dave Spithill and
Daniel Mahony lifted and ensured the Raiders were
promoted and Grand Final bound.
In the Reserves match, Bentleigh squared off
against Old Paradians, with the proud suburban
club getting one back over the Old Boys by
seven points. In what was a wet and windy day in
Melbourne, both teams were evenly matched at the
first change with the Raiders holding the only goal
of the game. The game dramatically changed after
quarter time as the Demons stepped up a gear, piling
on 4.4 to 1.4 to gain so much need ascendancy. As
the conditions worsened, the only goal of the third
term went Bentleigh’s way as things appeared to be
wrapped up. But the boys from the northern regions
of this fine city weren’t done, booting three goals to
one to narrowly fall short of a famous comeback.
Michael Patena was clearly best afield for the
Raiders, with valuable help coming from Trav
Girovski and Matty Raponi. Bentleigh’s character
got them through, but Mick Lee wouldn’t be happy
with how the boys stopped running. Brandon Hunt
stepped up with his stable mate Dracula Morrison
leading the charge. Rex Coles who had played third
fiddle to Mick McCullagh and Elliot Box, gave
Bentleigh something for once.
THIS WEEK: Looking now at the big dance,
Banyule, the heavy favourites will be pitted against
a worthy foe in Old Paradians. The week over will
have done the Bears a world of good, with injuries
playing a huge role in their 2010 campaign. While
for the Raiders who have emerged from the mud
of last week, can they run on heavy legs to power
themselves to an upset win? Once again whilst
trying to avoid sounding like a broken record,
David Boundy and Peter Brabender and Brett
McAllister will need to have a huge impact to get
over the line. For the rested Bears, Ash Brown is
once again key, and with eight goals, ‘he is only as
good as his last game.’ The best duo in the backline
all year, Dave Drapac and Michael Christian, will
just need to be as consistent as they have been all
year to ensure a title for Banyule.
Arguably we have the best two teams squaring up in
the “twos” Grand Final. Banyule like their seniors,
will be well rested, but will the week off take an
edge off that killer instinct or add to it?
DIVISION 3
POWER BLACKED OUT
Jonathan Hibbert
Apart from the lack of a fence, (and therefore the
VAFA’s very benevolent decision to suspend the
day’s entry fees) the first thing you notice about
Edinburgh Reserve is, it’s pretty big. Pretty big.
Not very big, but pretty big. Compared with
Scammell the week before, Springvale is flat and
open, it has wider wings, a couple of sparsely
dotted trees, and clubrooms half the size. The
centre circle is not a turgid mess, and though
the ground is wet underfoot, it’s firm enough for
decent play. As I wander in from Police Rd, the
breeze floats from the south, and I smell cigarette
smoke from a group of blokes on the boundary
near the northern goals. By the sounds of their
guffawing, they’re figuring out some choice
insults, and by the looks of their jackets, it’s for
any passing pitiable Power House player. The
western wing is lined with supporters, the route
to the canteen ensconced in Power House lads,
the miniscule sheltered rows of seats undeniably
claimed by St John’s supporters. I guess you could
say, in light of the later weather, interesting forms
of Darwinism were in play: the Power House
contingent draining the canteen, leaving JOC’s
fans starving, who ultimately gained comfortable
revenge when the heavens broke.
From the first bounce, it was clear this was going
to be a tough game. Not just ‘tough,’ in the way
that contemplative souls like to romanticise
footy, but physically hard and unforgiving,
and a battle of wills as much as bodies. Reece
Humphreys managed a few clearances, matched
by Rohan Scott’s efforts across the St John’s
forward line. A quick goal to Scott, as well as
Costas looking dangerous saw St John’s march
ahead, attacking along the west wing, helped by
a generous north-easterly. In what was to become
a source of perpetual fascination and indignation
for JOC’s supporters, the ‘House’s Matthew
Taylor kicked the first of his goals from a free
kick. It wasn’t the only one given either; the day
was marked by free kicks, both sides feeling hard
done by. (Which perhaps means the umps got it
right!) The boys from the boundary got into it:
“Number 28! Your’re a [insert adjective here]
custard!” “Custard?” “yeah, I just made that up
then! Like it?”
At quarter time, the Dandenong men were slightly
depressed, despite a narrow lead. Over handling
the ball in the backline, handballing constantly,
and yielding a couple of easy goals to Power
House, as well as not particularly capitalising
on a healthy wind saw them form a huddle with
heads bowed. Coach Matt Jones commanded
“good teams are good teams because they play
good fi nals football, so let’s play good football.”
Kicking into the wind, St John’s kept up the
attack, and Ben Graham snapped true like his
namesake. Liam O’Connor, extendo-arms solid
in defence, kept driving the pill long and out of
danger, but he could do nothing as Matt Taylor
was gifted another free kick and goaled. Shortly
after St John’s indignant cries of disbelief had
subsided, they were roused again with cries of
joy as Graham snapped again for his second.
Dominating clearly, the black, green and gold had
players lurking at the back of every pack, alert
and ready to be fed by constant hard-ball-gets.
Power House, in desperate efforts to attack, were
constricted to the eastern wing, and corralled
by St John’s and the constant wind. Kicks were
smothered as ‘House men endeavoured to run
the ball, and ran too far. Finally, midway through
the quarter, as if a switch were tripped, Power
House began to chase, smother, and tackle with
the intensity of a team with something to play
for. Eventually attacking down the dominant
western wing, they forged forward, Matt Taylor
awarded another free kick, and conversion: 3
free kicks, 3 goals. Opposing styles of football
became obvious, St John’s running, chipping and
tearing apart the ‘House backline; matched by
the Pikemen’s long, long bombs, hitting St John’s
like a sledgehammer.
12 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010

By half time, while rolling, black clouds
threatened, only five points were in it as both
teams paraded into the rooms. Though tiny,
at least they had rooms. The umpires were
condemned to sit behind the clubrooms, next to
the brick toilet blocks. Looking over from the
beleaguered canteen, lukewarm pie in hand and
coke in pocket, I spied the La Trobe coaching
staff standing almost unseen below a light pole,
watching and waiting on their future opponents.
They’d be stupid not to.
Straight back into the arena, and Cachia drills
a major, as a foul wind and intemperate climate
revealed itself. A chill ripped through anybody
not under cover, and the heavens broke. I rushed
for cover beneath the tiny verandah with seats
along with JOC’s fan base. As Paul Edwards’
monster kickouts cleared the St John’s forward
line, and Matt Taylor got another free kick and
goal (4/4), I had a chuckle listening to the sharp
tongue of an irritated wife behind me: “ “Bloody
Fathers’ Day, all I wanted to do is sleep in. He
bloody well drags me here. It’s cold, windy and
wet. I want to go home.” Too bad her husband
heard: “It’s Fathers’ Day, I want to watch the
footy. If you want to go home, you can walk.”
Can’t argue with that, I guess. On the siren,
Taylor converted yet another, and Power House
were within striking distance…
The last term saw the rain turn to drizzle, and the
drizzle to nothing, as the sun burst through filthy
clouds. Alan Foster saw it as his time to shine,
sneaking a goal, while St John’s consistently
missed the big sticks; in what my compatriot
from Power House Reserves, 7 foot tall “Bucket
Hands” Devine, described as “costly kicking
… put that in the Record ey.” Suffering a red
card, the JOC’s were on the back foot, and
Paul Edwards’ move to full forward for ‘House
was imposing, snagging a couple to bring
them within a goal. The atmosphere was tense,
on a knife-edge, until St John’s kicked straight
and stifled Power House, driving home the
coffin lid. On a day when the result could have
swung either way, Power House conducted
themselves admirably in the face of such strong
opposition, and are unlucky to miss out on a
grand final berth.
Grand Final:
The two premier teams of the division compete
for glory, out at Vermont. La Trobe play with
the traditional student mix of the erratic and the
brilliant; and with youthful forwards like Ganino
and Patten, and a ruckman such as Wood, they are
fantastic. Opposed by older heads at St John’s,
sporting names such as Cachia and Pickering,
this shapes as a fascinating contest. The ledger
lies 2-1 in the Students’ favour. I have as much
authority on the matter of prediction as a deaf
man contemplating opera. This said, I risk the ire
of all Dandenong, and pick a La Trobe victory
by, it doesn’t even need to be stated, a minuscule
margin.
DIVISION 4
THERE’S GONNA BE A HEARTACHE TONIGHT
Jim Sutton
LAST WEEK: Preliminary Final – Mt Lilydale
vs Manningham Cobras
Tough conditions greeted both sides, with
Manningham winning the toss and having first use
of the breeze. Mt Lilydale were focussed on making
a good start after letting the Gryphons get away
the previous week, and their attack on the Cobras
ball carriers was hard and decisive, and they forced
them into hesitation and error, and racked up nine
scoring shots to just a single major. Manningham
came out harder in the second quarter but again
the Rams held sway although inaccurate kicking
kept the margin manageable at half time. In the
third the Cobras pushed hard but the Rams were
again strong into the wind, with the defence led by
Luke Evans and Mark Gower virtually impassable,
before Mt Lilydale ran away with the game in the
final term. For the Rams Tom Wall and Al Stuart
were good in the middle, as was Jim Baughan who
won nearly every ruck contest, and Haydn Moyes
was back to his best on the wing.
Unfortunately for the Cobras they were hit with
the injury curse during the finals series, and seven
forced changes for the prelim final was not an ideal
preparation. To their credit they did battle on all
day, but with no bench left to call on in the last
Manningham run out of legs, and Mt Lilydale blew
the game away. Warrick DeVercelli capped off a
brilliant season with another tough display for the
Cobras, while Nathan Pentland topped off a good
day with a screamer in the last quarter.
It was a fantastic season for the Cobras, who won
just three games and finished 10 th in 2009, and
advanced all the way to a preliminary final this
year. If they can maintain their list, they will run
out as one of the early season favourites in 2011.
TODAY: Grand Final – Monash Gryphons vs
Mt Lilydale
There’s not much middle ground when it comes to
grand finals, for the winners jubilation and a lifetime
bond with teammates, for the losers devastation
and a long wait before you can get back on the
ground and seek redemption. Whatever the result
it’s safe to say the Gryphons and the Rams have
been clearly the two best sides in 2010 and both
have fully deserved their promotion to Division 3
for next season.
Monash have won the last two encounters by
five or six goals and have to go into this as warm
favourites, and they have had a much lighter
workload than the Rams who have had to play all
four weeks of the finals series. To give themselves
the best chance, Mt Lilydale will need to get
off to a good start like last week and put some
scoreboard pressure on the Gryphons, and reduce
the turnovers going forward which plagued their
second semi loss. The Rams have copped a few
injuries to important players in Hooke, Rhodes and
Pulkka in the last couple of weeks and it’s hard
to see them toppling the Gryphons without being
at full strength. Congratulations to both clubs on
their great seasons and here’s hoping for a ripping
match to finish the year.
In the early game Monash Gryphons face an
opponent they probably weren’t expecting in
Swinburne Uni. The Razorbacks have done a great
job to come from fifth spot, while the Gryphons
only loss for the season came way back in Round
1. The Gryphons beat the Razorbacks easily mid-
RISING STAR
VAFA RISING STAR 2010 – THE FINAL FIVE
Tim Allan – Ormond
Performed with distinction in the U19 rep game against
the VCFL, Tim’s exceptional form continued throughout
the season leading to his Round 13 nomination.
Remarkably, Tim has been named Ormond’s best
player on 6 occasions in 2010 and been in their best 12
times from 17 matches and must be close to a certainty
for their Best and Fairest award this season.
Tom Campbell – Old Scotch
A shining light at Old Scotch this season, Tom
was nominated in Round 17 after a string of top
performances for both his club and the VAFA at U19
and U23 level. A ruckman with a big future, many
AFL clubs have cast their eye over his work and we
could see his name in lights over the summer. Tom was
named in Old Scotch’s best 11 times from 16 matches
which shows both his quality and consistency.
Daniel Nicholson – Uni Blues
Nominated in Round 9 and touted as a possible draft
selection at the end of this season, Daniel has lived up
to the hype in 2010 despite some close checking by
opposition players. Named in the best for the VAFA’s
SHARPSHOOTERS
TOP OF THE CHARTS
U19 and U23 representative matches this season,
Dan had been named in the best for Uni Blues on 7
occasions.
Daniel Noonan – Old Xaverians
Nominated in Round 2, Dan’s exceptional early form
continued throughout the season and he will be a big
part of Old Xaverians’ finals ambitions. Named one of
the best for the VAFA U19 side against the VCFL in
June, Dan has been named in the Xavs’ best 12 times
this season.
Callum Pohl – Old Trinity
Nominated in Round 3, Callum demonstrated his
talent very early in his first season in the VAFA by
being named in Old Trinity’s best in 7 of their first 8
matches. An excellent contributor to the VAFA U19
sides win over the VCFL, Callum finished the season
off well, being in the best in 3 of the last 5 matches and
is certain to feature prominently in the end of season
club awards.
The winner of the 2010 Club Warehouse Rising Star
Award will be announced at the VAFA’s Big Night
RESERVES
Tom Brain
Well folks my Selection prowess has certainly
not improved over the years as I rode home the
miserly some of a mere 2 winners in some terrible
conditions on the weekend.
Full credit to the Players, Volunteers, Supporters
of all club’s and of course the Umpires who braved
the elements to ensure that the games all went on.
A star studded De La Salle outfit well led by
veterans Ben Corin and captain Peter Harrison
made short shrift of the Uni Blues to rightfully
advance to that last day in September in a couple
of weeks.
St Bernard’s also with a splattering of Senior Stars
prevailed over the Uni Blacks to also advance
with the chance to take some silverware out in the
direction of the Snake Pit.
What a game of contrasts in Premier C at
Sandringham on Sunday. In total control at Half
Time Mazenod looked to have the game all wrapped
up so much so the Ormond boys hadn’t raised a
twin calico. But then in an amazing transformation
the Monders came out and totally dominated the
second half to win by some 20 points and thus earn
another crack at the Fieldsmen.
NOB’S advanced to the big one in Division 1 with
a comfortable 40 point victory over the hapless
Whitefriars who unfortunately went out in straight
sets.
Bentleigh earn the right to try again at Banyule and
win their second Premiership in a row by disposing
of my old school the Old Paradians in a hard fought
encounter.
Yarra Valley easy winners in Division 3, over a
disappointing Powerhouse now have to reappraise
and see what they can do against UHSVU again.
And so perhaps to the upset of the Ressies Comp this
season with the unheralded Swinburne University
aka “The Pigs” because of the magnificent animal
on their Jumper, recording an 11 point victory over
the highly fancied North Brunswick unit, thus
ending Darren Adams’ dream for another season.
The prevailing conditions made goal scoring pretty
much impossible but great individual efforts from
Shane Hamilton with 5 and Thomas Kennedy with
4 were certainly highlights.
John Nicolpoulos, Mark Salvadori, Brandon Hunt,
Michael Patena, Matthew Laing, and Jacob Mennen
were all still pretty potent forwards with their 3
majors having an impact on all their games.
Premier A,B and C all head to the penultimate
game as six sides battle for the 3 vacant spots and
the right to compete on that one day that we all
aspire to.
Uni Blues were disappointing last week, OM’S
had the better conditions in which to play, and thus
with a week to rest recuperate and plan, I reckon
that the lads from the Junction Oval can get over
the line.
Likewise in Premier B the break may be just what
the Skobbers need to get themselves a spot in a
Grand Final.
Just can’t go past Caulfield Grammarians in Premier
C, although as the Fields witnessed Ormond are a
very dangerous opponent when on song.
Will stick my neck out here and tip the NOBS to
surprise the Monash Blues Boys and create a bit of
an upset in Division 4.
Can’t see Banyule and UHSVU not greeting the
judge in Division’s 2 and 3
And so to Vermont…Can Swinburne Uni maintain
their excellent form and knock off the Monash
Gryphons who have one 16 straight and are looking
at bringing home their first bit of silverware. At
the risk of upsetting Jack McDonalds’s apple cart
I think it is a possibility, but the Gryphs rightfully
have been the top side all year and so deserve to
bring home the bacon. Will be at East Caulfield
Reserve tonight Jack to collect some of those free
ales…!!!!!!
THIRDS
FAVOURITES WIN
Richard Hummerston
The Thirds second semi finals resulted in wins
to the two favourites, but there certainly some
anxious moments for the Banyule Bears on the
Saturday. They jumped to an early lead, but by
half-time, that had evaporated, which was about
the only thing that did evaporate in the pouring
rain. The third stanza might have sent further
chills down the Bear spine. They led by just five
points over a confident St Kevin’s, who unlike
so many teams this season, would not bow to
their will. The last quarter was a battle of the
defences. Both teams added a major, which saw
the minor premier sneak into the Grand Final.
Tindale booted three for the victors, no mean feat
in the conditions. It is going to be a big couple of
weeks at Brockwell Reserve and there’s nothing
like booking early to avoid disappointment.
This week, St Kevin’s front up again to take on
the Blacks. I like SKOB to get a second shot
at it.
On Sunday, Old Xavs fronted up to club
championship winner De La Salle. The minor
premier began the better and when DLS made
little impact in the second, the result seemed a
foregone conclusion. The Red ‘n’ Blacks, with
Matt Altis firing up front, continued to push
away. They added just one more in the third but
snagged three in the last, while the Blue and
Golds remained stuck in the mud.
De La meet OM’s on Sunday. This will be a
real contest, and I’m tipping that the Dark Blues
might just prevail.
RETROSPECTIVE
Geoff Reilley
12 Months Ago – 2009
Recovering from the second semi debacle in A
Section, De La Salle showed their true character
when they defeated Uni Blues in the preliminary
final. Trailing the Blues at the first two breaks,
De La drew level at three quarter time and ran out
winners 16.9 to 13.10. Best – Davidson, Pickett (3),
Harrison (5), Mannix (3), Moloney, Shields (DLS)
and Torney, Heinz, Lewis, McConnell, Paterson,
Mugavin (UB).
In the B Section preliminary final Old Trinity
kicked 7.5 to nil with the gale in the first quarter. St
Kevins were somewhat disappointing in the second
quarter allowing Trinity to kick 2 goals against the
wins while scoring 5 themselves. It was a walk in
the part of OT’s after the main break and they won
easily 16.18 to 6.7. Best – Healey, Ramsden (6),
Cultrera (4), Jessop, Eckersley, Chivers (OT) and
Edgar, Keeley, Williams, Aughton, Sheehy, Garvey
(SKOBS).
Rupertswood won the D1 Section flag against Fitzroy,
12.18 to 9.11. Best – McPhee, Plummer, McDonald,
Phillips (3), Brennan, Spinner (Rupertswood) and
Clark, Atherton, Meighen, Mackay, Biggs, O’Reilly
(Fitzroy). Despite poor kicking for goal, Bentleigh
won the D3 Section premiership 13.23 against St
Mary’s Salesian 10.18. Best – Forrest (3), Willis,
Holmesby, Fedderson, Ferris, Tangas (Bentleigh)
and Fisher, Rose, Bonnici, D Hill, Kelly, Dwyer
(StM/S).
5 Years Ago – 2005
It was the Old Xaverians who were successful in the
A Section preliminary final and they were entitled
to try and add to their list of A Grade pennants in
a week’s time. It must be said that the prelim final
against Old Haileyburians could have gone either
way in a thrilling encounter but the Xavs’ pride
won out 10.12 to 10.10. Best – McDonald, Bowen,
Ruyg, Colbert, Arnold, Beardsley (OX) and
Trollope, Brown, Armstrong, Steinfort, Walden,
Siapantis (OH).
The B Section preliminary final became a one horse
race after half time between Old Ivanhoe and Old
Brighton. The boys from bayside gave a fair account
of themselves in the first half but the Ivanhoe
lads established themselves as real contenders
by winning 19.11 to 10.12. Best – Branigan (6),
Russian, Payne, Thompson, Kefelas, Price (OI) and
Williams, S Gadsden, Ewert, B Gadsden, Pirrie (4),
Paroissien (OB).
As predicted, University Blacks won easily against
Beaumaris in the C Section Grand Final and had
taken total control early in the third quarter. Final
scores 20.12 to 8.5. Best – Batten, Evans (3),
Purcell, M Kempton, Goonan, Bevacqua (UB) and
Haynes, L McNicholas, Wonnacott, Heath, Ensor, L
Atkins (Beaumaris).
10 Years Ago – 2000
Old Xaverians trailed narrowly for the majority of
the day in the A Section preliminary final against
St Kevins in a thrilling contest. 2 points down at
the final break the Xavs triumphed by 4 points, 15.8
to 14.10 and would go into their sixth successive
A Section GF the following week. Best – Blood,
Landrigan, A Dillon, Ellis (3), McQueen-Parton,
Ford (OX) and Callery, O’Keefe, Garvey, Grigg,
Olive (4), Bowles (SKOBS).
In B Section Mazenod Old Collegians proved too
strong for North Old Boys in the preliminary final
16.11 to 11.17. Best – Dunne (3), Lancaster, Ryan,
M Murray, O’Donoghue, Tucker (Mazenod) and
Casboult, Loch, Sanders, Drum, Collison, Wilkinson
(NOBS).
Therry Penola won the C Section Grand Final 12.13
to Beaumaris 9.10. Best – Nancarrow, O’Sullivan,
M Goodwin, Clarke, Petrevski, S Bannister (Therry)
and Ensor, Lee, Nicholson, Philpott, Martin, Barrow
(Beaumaris). Therry’s line up was as follows –
B: Carter Edwards O’Sullivan
BH: S Bannister Boyle Nancarrow
C: D Goodwin Mills Caccamo
HF: M Goodwin Kerr C Bannister
F: Robinson Evans Clarke
Synman, Liddell (Caulfield) and Ryan, Leask,
Maher, Andrews, Jenkins (4), Dervan (State Bank)
and Hay, Houston, M White, Crowe, Jenkins, Midro
(Whitefriars).
Old Geelong were too good for AJAX in E Section
and won the flag 19.15 to 10.7. It was a very
powerful second half display by the OG’s who were
behind at half time but kicked 12 goals to 2 after the
main break. Best – Dunn, S Furphy (4), Handbury,
McDougal, Manton, Bayliss (OG’s) and B Goldberg,
30 Years Ago – 1980
Old Brighton were premiers following an
entertaining C Section Grand final against Geelong,
20.6 to 15.15. It was a stunning display of goal
kicking by Brighton. Best – Gedye, Epstein, King, J
Priestley (6), Millis (4), S Priestley (Brighton) and
McMahon, Cookson, Taylor (3), Johnston, Fahey
FOR THE LOVE OF
Nothing Better Than a Wick ‘Dog
Old Carey held a luncheon upstairs at Sportscover
Arena last weekend for 80 of their most fervent
supporters (that’s all that can fit upstairs!). One of
those was John “Jack” Elliott, former President
of Carlton and Old Carey 250 gamer and life
member. On arrival at Sportscover Arena, Jack
politely asked one of the canteen ladies if they
could direct him to the luncheon, which they
kindly did. On thanking them, Jack enquired
“do you sell hotdogs here?” The obvious answer
was yes. “Well, save me one please? I’ll be back
down to pick that up shortly”. True to his word
and after enjoying his soup entrée, Jack ventured
downstairs, picked up his beloved dog and
returned to the lunch devouring his fare whilst
fellow patrons enjoyed their fillet steak.
Big Year for Black Cats
It’s been a big year for the Carey alumni in
2010. Not only has the football club achieved
it’s highest position in the VAFA (promotion to
Premier) since their inception in 1953, a group
of former students have enjoyed considerable
success with a horse called Philda (named after
former school Principal Phil De Young). Big
things are predicted for this galloper and maybe a
little assistance with uni fees for the part-owners
once the prize money filters through.
Varsity Power
Monash Gryphons, Monash Blues, La Trobe
University have all won promotion for next year.
Uni Blacks can make it today. All in all, a pretty
good year for the Uni clubs.
History in the Making
Once again, congratulations to Old Carey on subsequently defeated by Swinburne Uni in
getting to Premier for the first time in their the decider but achieved their highest position
history. Also set to make history this weekend in the VAFA with promotion to Div 2. The
are the Monash Gryphons. The club has not recruitment of AFL great Richard Osborne
won a Senior or Reserves Premiership since as coach this season has been a masterstroke,
their foundation in 1991. The Senior side made with burgeoning player numbers and the loss
the Grand Final in Div 3 in 2003 after defeating of only one game apiece in the Seniors and
Rupertswood in the Preliminary Final by 4 Reserves. Good luck to the Gryphs on their
points with the last kick of the day. They were history making day.
THE GAME
Ground Power
It’s amazing sometimes when an organisation
such as the VAFA goes to a council in a desperate
situation trying to access grounds. The answer is
no and the rationale is that they need to prepare
the ground for cricket. However, when the
VFL have their grounds closed, all of a sudden
those grounds are suddenly “available” and
the preparation for cricket can suddenly be put
on hold. No problems with that decision, just
frustrating for the VAFA who would like to utilise
grounds weeks earlier but are constantly denied.
Trip Down Memory Lane
It’s great (and it speak volumes for the character
of the people) to see former Board Members and
CEO’s helping out as Duty Officer’s over the
finals series. You may not be aware but as many
as 15 different venues are required to stage VAFA
finals. This number is slightly down this year due
to ground closures and playing three matches a
day, however without the work of these gents, the
matches and the management of them would be
problematic. Former CEO Phil Stevens has been
helping out with some of the U19 matches and
when presented with the match day memo he
commented, “this looks familiar!” It should, he
wrote most of it during his time here.
New Format Just the Ticket
Looking forward to the new format of the VAFA
Presentation Night this coming Monday. The
night will be transformed in to an awards type
ceremony rather than the sit down dinner format of
previous years. Following
the awards presentation,
the night is open for
mingling and celebrating
the achievements of the
stars. Tickets are still
available, so contact
UNDER 19
Bye bye Beauy was the story from Saturday as Old
Xavs pushed into the Preliminary Final against
schoolboy rivals Old Scotch. The Sharks were
shattered after roaring into the finals series with an
eight-game winning streak that included wins over
the Xavs and Scotch. The Xavs went about utilising
the wet conditions from the get go with desperate
attack on the ball and long kicking from half back.
Beauey was battling to get its hands on the pill but
swung the momentum in its favour in the second
term. The Sharks pinched the lead only to see them
trail at half time by a single kick. The Xavs came out
at the main break with one of its most impressive
quarters of footy, kicking five goals to nil. Louis
Tiernan was special in the third quarter with a fine
goalkicking performance. The forward presence of
Jack Stean was a welcome sight to the red n’ black
supporters, while down back Woods and Plant
were a two-man trampoline. The consistent Jack
Franklyn relished the role on Dickinson who was
held to one goal, and Luke Bisset was still hard to
catch in the dirty conditions. Joel Di Natale was a
standout for Beauey with his consistent clearance
work, while James Lapa played a blinder. Matt
Teasdale won the better of the ruck, but it was the
Xavs’ appetite for the footy and use of momentum
that saw them run out 37-point victors.
De La Salle cruised into the Grand Final with a
comfortable 32-point win over Old Scotch. De La
responded to a second-quarter Scotch challenge
by kicking five goals to one in the third, similar
to the match prior. The damage could have been
worse had the boys from Malvern not kicked so
Collingwood like. Van den Broek started forward
and the match up on Ben Humphrey looked
tantalising, but didn’t last long. A few easy
misses in the first quarter from the Cardinals was
reminiscent of the last encounter between the two
sides. Both backlines were impressive in the first
half, rebounding off halfback with impressive skill
in the wet as opposed to the desperate slugout
between the Xavs and Beauey. Ed Clinch kicked
a freakish boundary line goal in the second that
left all onlookers in awe. Ben Nethersole showed
off his solid skills of contested marking and long
kicking in the wet, and Ash Streker flew under
the radar again to rebound well for De La. Sam
Muttdon was a shining light for the Cardinals, who
like Old Xavs are still wondering how to defeat the
undefeated.
TODAY: In Round 8 Old Scotch defeated the Xavs
by seven points. In that match Goss kicked six
goals and Sam Barnett kicked four. Scotch captain
Max Davis inflicted the most damage on the day
and James Sansom was up and about. The gut
runners of Nidam and Bisset tore up Stradbroke
but Scotch was able to control its lead throughout
the match. The Xavs had more scoring shots, 26-
23. The two met again in Round 17 at Camberwell
Sports Ground. The Xavs registered 3.9 in the first
quarter and the Cardinals punished the inaccuracy
with an eight goal – one final quarter. Barnett
kicked three goals while no one wearing red n’
black had multiple goals. Matt Jane played his best
match for the season, while Tristan Parker lead
the way for the Xavs with the midfield absence of
Nidam. The loss of the Premier team to Collegians
should spell out any speculation that Goss will line
up this week. Scotch had 24 scoring shots to 22
and won by 53 points. Another wet deck is on the
cards this Saturday morning at Sandringham and
Old Scotch will start favourites. Two wins against
OX for the season should be enough confidence for
the Cardinals to meet De La again, but the appetite
displayed against Beaumaris makes it folly to rule
out the Xavs. Old Xavs by 12 points.
North 1: It was not pretty, but it was very effective,
and in the end they got the job done: Werribee
deservedly booked a berth in the grand final, and
a rematch with semi final conquerors Fitzroy,
when they ground out a convincing win over Old
Carey at Highgate Reserve. A boil-over threatened
as Carey challenged the Tigers with a 3-goal-to-2
second term. In fact, there was only five points in
it at half-time. But in the third quarter the class of
Werribee told, and they slammed on six crucial
majors to put the game out of the Panthers’ reach.
It had been rumoured that Werribee were slightly
48 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2010

undermanned in the semi, and interestingly they
had seven inclusions who were absent in that
shock loss to the Roys. Important among these
were Adam Salamone and Victor Borg, both in the
best players, and Jaxon Cooke who kicked three
goals. Hats off to Carey; they should be proud of
their fighting finals performances and third-place
finish.
Preview: Fittingly, it is the two best teams who
will play off for the prize. I expect Werribee to
bounce back from their second-semi final loss and
defeat Fitzroy by 20 points.
North 2: Old Ivanhoe carried their rich vein of
form into the preliminary final, and for the final
three quarters Aquinas had absolutely no answers.
After a subdued beginning, the flood-gates opened
after the first break, as the Hoers piled on fifteen
goals without allowing the Bloods to add to their
solitary major. James Moio has often slipped
under the radar but, after booting 6, he now has
56 goals to his name this season. Other important
contributors for Old Ivanhoe were Jack Ridewood,
Tim Gleeson, Michael Del Monte and Michael
Bacskos. They are now undefeated since Round
14 and are carrying a full head of steam into the
final game of the season. Aquinas will probably
be disappointed at finishing third, but of late their
form had been solid without being over-inspiring.
Preview: This grand final shapes as a classic, with
two in-form teams set to stage a real fair dinkum
battle. Possibly influenced by the result of their
Round 16 encounter, I am going to stick out my
neck and tip the underdog: Old Ivanhoe to upset
Therry-Penola by 5 points in a thriller.
South 1: A knock out Preliminary final between
two very even sides went right down to the wire
at Waverly Park on Saturday. Previous encounters
during the home and away season had both Skevs
and the Fields with one win a piece. Conditions
to put it bluntly were terrible, and all the big men
could do was crash packs and contest. In the end a
3-point win to Caulfield will see them into a Grand
Final against Old Brighton. In what is going to
be a close match I think the week off, class and
toughness of the Brighton midfield will get them
over the line. Old Brighton 4-goals.
South 2: In ordinary conditions Old Geelong gave
it their all in the hope to keep their finals dream
alive. Leading all day they fell short at the final
hurdle, and the curtain closed on their season. The
Grand Final will be contested between Oakleigh
and Mazenod. A betting man cannot go past
Oakleigh as they have been the standout team
all year, however stranger things have happened
and with the weather the way it is a tough and
uncompromising brand of footy is what Mazenod
will need to have any chance. Oakleigh 6-goals
UMPIRES
Steve McCarthy & Leah Gallagher
GRAND FINALS
This weekend is the ultimate prize for teams who
have battled it out over 20 weeks. We umpires will
have the same feeling as it has also been a reward
for a season of highs and lows.
Grand Finals are special and if you are appointed
to one, be it that you think you deserved it or are
disappointed that it was not the section you wanted,
take it, enjoy it and be prepared for two teams who
will leave nothing in the club rooms to get to the
their prize. Good luck to all! Enjoy, but you still
have an important job to do on the day.
Do the VAFAUA and yourself proud in your
biggest game of the year.
To the clubs who see themselves in higher sections
for 2011, congratulations on the promotion, but as
you know the job will be completed today.
WHICH WAY?
At times, players might kick in the wrong direction;
they just have a little brain fade for a few seconds.
Field umpire Damien Anthony had that same fade
a few weeks back when he paid a free kick then
awarded a 25m penalty. Damien started backing
off towards the players back line instead of the
forward line, the penny dropped very quickly and
the direction was corrected.
TIMES UP!
When the final siren rings to end the Division 1 grand
final this weekend we will see the end a fantastic
career for a VAFA stalwart. After 819 games and
28 years involvement, legendary Monash Blues
timekeeper James (Jimmy) Maloney will be
hanging up the stopwatch. For most of his time
at Monash, Jimmy has controlled the clock for
both the ressies and seniors only missing a handful
of games in that long career. His commitment to
his role and the Monash Blues Football Club is
unquestionable and we as umpires will certainly
miss him. Never one to seek the accolades, we find
it amazing to see him missing from the list of VAFA
Certificate of Merit recipients. As all at Monash
know, no-one is allowed near the controls of the
electronic scoreboard out there at the Frearson
Oval so handing over those duties will be tough for
Jimmy. Very big shoes to fill when Monash Blues
return to premier C in 2011! With Monash Blues
playing in the two grand finals out at St.Bernards
today, how appropriate and what a fairytale finish
it would be if Jimmy pushes that button to end
the game with him seeing (and participating in) at
least one Monash win. Congratulations Jimmy on
your years of dedication to the task and don’t be a
stranger to the VAFA.
CONGRATULATIONS
Young field umpire Jayde Daly won the Golden
Whistle Award with the Moorabbin Saints
Junior Football League last week. Jayde who
has been with us a few years now also helps out
umpiring and mentoring the junior umpires at the
MSJFL and is a rightful recipient of this award.
Congrats Jayde.
Off field, well done to Tim Sutcliffe whose effort
on our night of nights earned him the “First Out The
Door” award, proudly sponsored by the Security
of Crown Casino. Running a close second was
Rebecca Brown. Certainly not the quinella most
people would have gone for based on the markets
framed by Brent Woodhead early that day.
UMPIRES OF THE YEAR
On Monday night at the VAFA’s Big Night Out
a couple of important awards are handed out
to the umpires. Umpire of the Year and Most
Promising Umpire will be presented. Next week
in this column we will be naming our Umpire of
the Year – the one who has impressed (?) us the
most in 2010.
Congratulations also to former VAFA goal umpire
Steve Piperno on receiving the VFL Umpire of
the Year.
PUB RUN
Don’t forget the traditional Pub Run next Thursday
night. Head to The Wick for a couple to celebrate
the end of the year (except for the conscientious
few who are still “live” and need to train).
And spots are filling fast for our Grand Final brunch
prior to the Premier GF. See Rusty Davidson for
details.
UNDER 18
TO THE FINALE . . .
Nick Wald
And then there were two…in each division.
Season 2010 comes to a close today for the
U18s and we have two thrilling contests on hand
to decide who will take home the cup for the
respective divisions.
be looking to carry his recent form into today’s
match. Werribee’s formidable season came to a
close and they can be proud of their efforts as
they drink themselves into a state worthy of
another Channel Seven documentary.
In Division 1, Oakleigh will meet Rupertswood
after they annihilated a very flat Werribee team
by 90 points in the most lopsided prelim many
had ever witnessed. It was a question of whether
Werribee’s winning momentum from last week’s
semi would trump an Oakleigh outfit that was
stung by the all-conquering Rupertswood side
in their final. The answer wasn’t all that clear
early on in the game with Werribee refusing to
let the Krushers kick away, and the game was
well and truly anyone’s for the taking at half time
with just four goals separating the sides. It was
in the rooms at half time that Oakleigh decided
they weren’t going to dominate all season only to
bomb out of contention in straight sets, and they
put the game to bed in the third quarter as they
kicked eight goals and restricted the Bees to just
three behinds. In a warning to Rupo who await
the Krushers in the GF, Oakleigh did not stop
crushing until the final siren when the margin
stood at 90 points. A thirteen goal to two second
half set up the monstrous win and we now have
the grand final duel that many predicted. Rodney
Jetta backed up last week’s haul with another
eight to take his finals tally to thirteen and he
has to be stopped today if the Woods are to get
their hands on the flag. They should also be wary
of Cloke and Costigan who booted three apiece
and have the ability to wreak havoc if Jetta is
targeted. James Mreulje was outstanding and will
TODAY
Selections in BOLD
DIVISION 1
RUPERTSWOOD v OAKLEIGH
DIVISION 2
ST BERNARD’S v UHS-VU FLEMINGTON.
St Bernard’s and UHS-VU/Flemington will fight
it out after the Pitters outmuscled St Johns in the
Div 2 prelim. In greasy conditions at KB Reserve
on Saturday morning, neither side was able to
assert themselves on the contest in the opening
quarter, scoring just one goal apiece. Bernards
found themselves trailing narrowly at the first
break but could not have dreamt of a better second
quarter as they slammed on eight goals and kept
St Johns scoreless. A seemingly unassailable half
time lead to the Snow Dogs proved to be just that,
although St Johns did themselves no favours in
the second half kicking 2.7. Despite being
outscored, Bernards are now into their second
successive GF and will be desperate to atone for
last year’s disappointment. Based on a Facebook
event for the Granny that is being played out at
Craigieburn, 148 Bernards’ fans will be willing
their side over the line against the Acronyms.
WINNING EDGE
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
The Winning Edge Club Championship has been
won by De La Salle, who by any measure turned
in a sensational season all round. Four of its six
teams made the finals, and for the purpose of the
club championship, they were the right ones. Their
1s finished 3 rd , their Reserves 1 st , their U19s 1 st
(and unbeaten) and their Thirds in 2 nd place. Tally:
159 points.
Finishing second was Caulfield Grammarians
on 143. The Fields might have been closer but
for a couple of late season losses, but their
consolation prize is their promotion to Premier B.
Tally: 143 points.
Werribee finished third, just another point back.
They will also be promoted, jumping to Premier C
for the first time. Tally: 142.
Positions four through six are filled by Old
Xaverians (136.5), Collegians (124) and
University Blues (121), all of whom made the
finals in Premier football, along with De La Salle.
The strength of these Premier clubs comes from
quantity as well as quality and a Thirds team would
seem to be a pre-requisite.
Banyule, dominant and promoted after a great year in
Division 2, also had their Thirds, playing in Premier
B, finish on top. Their fifteenth place finish (109)
would have been higher but for the lack of a junior
team (and a missed opportunity at 54 points).
