(Collegians), Bernie Dunn (De La Salle), Neil Le
Lievre (Marcellin), Robert Hyde (North Old Boys),
Simon Meehan (Old Haileybury), Alan Stoneham
(Old Melburnians), Peter Sherwen (Old Scotch),
Michael McCarthy (Ormond) and Tony Crotty
(Therry). Who coached University Blues?
Paul “Capper” Boyle reached the 100 game
milestone for ANZ Bank and his never say die
attitude rubbed off on all around him. Paul’s wife
Carmel was also involved on the social side of the
Club to make a superb family contribution to the
Zedders.
30 Years Ago – 1981
State Bank saluted milestones for three club
stalwarts – Alan Pitts (200), Mick Scott (150) and
Neville Evans (150).
At Elsternwick Park, Ormond remained undefeated
when they defeated Uni Blacks 9.12 to 7.10 in
the A Section match of the day. Best – McAsey,
Andrew, Parisi (Ormond) and R Curtis, S Costello,
Wines (Uni Blacks).
and Phillips (Ivanhoe) were
the best players.
60 Years Ago – 1951
1950 A Section Premiers Ormond were annihilated
by Commonwealth Bank (1950 B Section Premiers)
with the final scores 17.10 to 2.6.
Hampton Rovers 7.14 defeated Ivanhoe 5.11 in a
close, hard fought A Section game. Doug Arnold
was great in the centre while Keith Embleton
scored a splendid goal from the boundary. Kevin
Clarke, Bill Clarke and Ron Rosenburg were best
for Ivanhoe.
It was ‘black Saturday’ at Corio Oval for the State
Saving Bank team when the home team, Geelong,
had 9 goals on the board before the Bankers
scored! Matheson, McPhee and Ferguson for
Geelong and Hill, Gellatty and Grubb for the Bank.
In an A Section thriller AJAX went down by a
solitary point to De La Salle 13.20 to 14.15. AJAX’s
first quarter was very costly, 1 goal 10 behinds!
Bluzer, Weiner and Fayman were the better players
for AJAX while De La failed to nominate their best.
40 Years Ago – 1971
It was the 1970 Grand Final all over again in A
Section as Caulfield Grammarians held off a strong
finishing bid by Coburg to win by 2 points – same
magic and same circumstances as the last Grand
final. Atchison, Clark and Lester continued their
fine form for the Grammarians with Sullivan, Jim
Sabri and Douglas best for Coburg.
Closest B Section game was Old Carey’s 13.19
defeat of Ivanhoe 12.18 with Old Carey kicking 4.5
to 0.4 in the final term. Geoff Thomas, Freeman and
Richard Elliott (Old Carey) and Berry, McMahon (5)
