OLD IVANHOE’S SMORGASBORD OF FOOTBALL. In addition to the sumptuous lunch and afternoon tea at Chelsworth Park, Old Ivanhoe hosted Old Brighton and on the adjacent ground, the Old Essendon U19s. Representatives from all three clubs attended the lunch, which was addressed by one of the ‘hoes’ favourite sons former VAFA President Richard Evans. WERRIBEE FLAG UNFURLING OR WINNING EDGE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Well done to Rod Harrington and the Werribee Districts guys on a scintillating start to Premier C. Victory in the seniors, reserves and U19s as well as their Thirds saluting in Premier Thirds. This club is definitely a big watch for the season and may be early favourites for the Winning Edge Club Championship. The flag flying is flying proudly near the new AFL-size goal posts. Evans spoke of the value of VAFA football to our community and a university study that had been conducted to quantify it in dollar terms. More details on that soon. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2011 43
Darren Dawson FTLOTG FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME FORMER AFL PLAYERS DEBUT. Sean Rusling (Old Camb - pictured), Simon Taylor (OM’s) and Carl Peterson (Old Carey) were three of the more highly fancied recruits to debut last Saturday. Rusling started on the bench but was quickly into the action. He took a mark but played on causing a turnover and a goal to Werribee. However he atoned a couple of minutes later and marked and goaled from outside 50. Rusling ended up with 2 goals and certainly showed that he is going to be a valuable player when he settles into the tempo of VAFA football. AUSKICK AT SCA Sportscover Arena welcomed the Elsternwick Auskick on to the main ground for the first time last Saturday morning. Over 150 kids registered and it is anticipated that those numbers could swell to nearly 200 through the year. Previously the Elsternwick Auskick was on the open fields at Elsternwick Park South. The move is sure to be welcomed by parents who had to have one eye on their kids as there was no protection from the traffic on New St. NEW GROUNDS, NEW BEGINNINGS Round 2 sees the first use (in competition) of a number of new facilities and grounds, all in Premier C. Old Essendon officially open its outstanding new facilities at the end of Runway 5 (Keilor Park). A big day is planned with the U19s kicking off at 9.30am and a celebratory lunch to formalize proceedings. Old Camberwell utilises its new facilities for the first time and they also have a celebratory lunch planned. An outstanding new pavilion and a redeveloped surfaced provide players and spectators alike some of the best facilities in VAFA football. The club’s Thirds, U19s, Reserves and Seniors provide a full book of matches for the official opening. Ormond returns to its home ground for the first time since the end of the 2009 season after significant ground redevelopments. The Monders played out of Glenhuntly Oval with Caulfield Grammarians last season and we’re sure Micky Oaten will be rapt to have his boys back out on EE Gunn – renowned as one of the toughest away assignments in the VAFA. 44 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2011
