Founded in 2001, the Petroleum Institute (PI) has established itself as a regional university that is 

dedicated to engineering education and research relevant to the oil & gas and broader energy industries. 

Undergraduate and Masters degrees are offered in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, 

Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Geosciences. A new degree in 

the field of Materials Science is now proposed. 

تأسس املعهد البرتولي يف عام 2001 ليغدو جامعة إقليمية متخصصة 

يف تدريس اهلندسة والبحث العلمي يف جماالت النفط والغاز وصناعات 

الطاقة يف أقصى حدودها.‏ مينح املعهد شهادة البكالوريوس واملاجستري يف اهلندسة 

الكيميائية،‏ واهلندسة الكهربائية،‏ واهلندسة امليكانيكية،‏ واهلندسة البرتولية،‏ وهندسة

In the name of God the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious 

Peace, mercy and blessings of God 

Today is an important occasion that always fills me with joy and pride 

as I witness the graduation of the Petroleum Institute. I am celebrating 

their graduation with great hopes and confident anticipation of what 

they will offer to their homeland and their people. We are confident 

that you join the work force in the UAE equipped with all of the science 

and knowledge that you have received during the years of study. 

This, for the most part, is due to the sincere efforts of your professors. 

We all respect and appreciate the PI Faculty members who worked 

very sincerely to provide you with the theoretical background and 

practical experiences that enable you to compete with graduates from 

ating companies. We trust that you will promote the respect and excellent 

academic reputation enjoyed by your institute in the UAE. 

Today, you represent to us and to your families and your professors a 

model of success that comes through perseverance and determination, 

and represent the embodiment of the dream of the founder of this beloved 

country, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who valued the 

spirit of knowledge and sought the prospects for success for the youth 

of the UAE. Take pride in your accomplishments and prepare for taking 

the responsibility of giving back to this country and its leadership 

and always remember how you were given tender and sponsored care. 

Our leader His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed and his brothers 

Their Highnesses Rulers of the Emirates, the Crown Prince and Deputy 

Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Sheikh Mohammed bin 

Zayed, were and still are sparing no effort to provide opportunities for 

growth, advancement and progress for our youth and our nation. Our 

leader has set it as one of the top priorities and has never hesitated to 

offer all that is necessary for the development of all educational institutions, 

including the PI to rival the best universities in the world. 

You are graduating today from an institution witnessing rapid development 

and progress. This growth is visible through the introduction of 

new engineering majors set up to increase the essential infrastructure 

and scientific knowledge. It is also felt through launching the graduate 

programs that attract more and more students locally and internationally, 

and the increase in scientific research projects showing confident 

and promising progress. 

We cannot fail to note the unique collaboration between various academic 

bodies in the PI on the one hand, and ADNOC and its operating 

companies on the other hand. This collaboration will reflect positively 

on both sides. 

Finally, we express appreciation and thanks and heartfelt congratulations 

to all members of the faculty and staff in the Petroleum Institute 

for their dedication and hard work to get our graduates to this great 

day. Congratulations to you, my graduating children, and to your fami-

السالم عليكم و رمحة اهلل و بركاته 

ميثل اليوم الذي حيتفل به خبرجيي املعهد البرتولي مناسبة هامة ختتلط فيها 

مشاعر الفخر و اإلعتزاز باخلرجيني و األمل والرتقب ملا سيقدمونه لوطنهم 

و شعبهم.‏ حنن واثقون أنكم ستغنون قطاع العمل يف دولة اإلمارات بكل 

ما لديكم من العلم و املعرفة اليت حصلتم عليها خالل سنوات الدراسة و 

اليت كان ‏–بالطبع-‏ ألساتذتكم الدور األكرب يف تلقيكم هلا . لقد عمل الكادر 

األكادميي الذي نكن له كل اإلحرتام و التقديرو بإخالص شديد على تزويدكم 

بالقواعد النظرية و اخلربات العملية اليت متكنكم من منافسة املتخرجني من 

أرقى اجلامعات العاملية . عاما بعد عام تصلنااإلنطباعات اإلجيابية عن الكفاءة 

و القدرة املتميزة اليت ميلكها خرجيو املعهد البرتولي الذين التحقوا بأدنوك و 

شركاتها العاملة ‏.و حنن نثق بأنكم ستعززون هذه القوة العاملة لتساهموا يف 

تكريس اإلحرتام و السمعة األكادميية اليت حيظى بها معهدكم يف أوساط 

قطاع العمل اإلماراتي.‏ 

أنتم اليوم بالنسبة لنا و ألسركم و أساتذتكم منوذج للنجاح الذي يعقب 

املثابرة و اإلصرار,‏ و جتسيد حللم مؤسس هذا الوطن الغالي املغفور له 

‏-بإذن اهلل-‏ الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان الذي ما كان أقرب إىل نفسه و 

روحه من العلم وما يفتح من آفاق ألبنائه شباب و شابات اإلمارات.‏ ولعلكم 

التقدم لشباب و شابات الوطن أكرب اإلهتمام و جيعلونه يف سلم أولوياتهم،‏ 

و مل يرتددوا يوماً‏ يف منح الغالي و النفيس لتطوير مجيع املؤسسات 

التعليمية و منها املعهد البرتولي ليضاهي أفضل اجلامعات العاملية.‏ 

إنكم تتخرجون اليوم من صرح تعليمي يشهد له بسرعة التطور و التقدم 

، فقد أضيفت على مدى السنني الربامج اهلندسية اجلديدة لتزيد من غنى 

البنية العلمية و املعرفية،‏ باإلضافة إىل برامج الدراسات العليا واليت جتذب 

املزيد من الدارسني حملياً‏ و دولياً‏ ، وال ننسى البحوث العلمية اليت تسجل 

تقدماً‏ واثقاً‏ و واعداً‏ . 

و ال يفوتنا هنا أن ننوه بالتعاون الفريد من نوعه بني اهليئات األكادميية 

املختلفة يف املعهد البرتولي من جهة وأدنوك وجمموعة شركاتها من جهة 

أخرى ، هذا ويرتبط املعهد البرتولي بإتفاقيات مع أرقى اجلامعات العاملية مثال 

جامعة كولورادو للمعادن وجامعة مريالند ‏)كلج بارك(،‏ جامعة ستانفورد 

وجامعة تكساس يف الواليات املتحدة،‏ جامعيت ليبون ولينز يف النمسا.‏ 

وجامعة الصني للبرتول يف الصني.‏ وهو بصدد توقيع عالقات عمل مع كربى 

اجلامعات ومعاهد البحوث يف خمتلف أحناء العامل لإلستفادة من األحباث يف 

جماالت اإلهتمام املشرتك.‏ مبا ينعكس إجيابيا على مجيع األطراف.‏

Your Excellency, Mr. Yousef Omeir Bin Omeir, Chairman of the Governing 

Board of the Petroleum Institute, distinguished guests, PI faculty 

and staff, and the very reason for our presence here tonight, the graduating 

class of 2010, I welcome you to the Petroleum Institute’s 5th Commencement 

Ceremony. Thank you all for being here to celebrate the 

many accomplishments of this group of outstanding young men. These 

young men have proved they are ready to be engineers. I am honored 

to be with you, our graduates, tonight, and to be with your families and 

faculty, the people who have helped you get to this momentous point in 

your lives. 

Before I go further, I would like to first recognize one of our distinguished 

guests, Dr. John Golden. Dr. Golden was the founding Chief Academic 

Officer, starting his service to the PI in 2001, and then continuing to help 

develop the PI to become the leading engineering college it is today. Welcome 

Dr. Golden. 

When the Petroleum Institute was launched, it was given a mission, 

which was to provide academic programs leading to degrees in engineering 

fields; to foster the creation of knowledge that benefits the regional 

oil and gas industry; and to provide continuing educational opportunities 

for professionals in the petroleum industry at large. We at the PI are 

fully dedicated to meeting those commitments. I believe that you, the 

graduating class of 2010, are an excellent example of how we are meeting 

our commitment to serve the petroleum industry and the UAE in 

general. 

The PI is still young – this is just our 10th year. But, when we include 

you, the graduating class of 2010 whom we are here to honor tonight, 

over 500 engineers and petroleum geoscientists have earned bachelors 

degrees and have joined ADNOC and its group of companies. About 

80% of our graduates are Emiratis. Our first post graduate degrees were 

awarded last year, and next year our first female students will receive 

bachelor degrees. As Provost, I pledge to continue to build on our many 

successes and make the PI one of the world’s leading engineering colleges. 

The Petroleum institute operates as an educational institute and as a research 

center for the oil and gas industry. We are a recognized regional 

leader in research output. You, the members of this graduating class, the 

class of 2010, have participated in valuable research that has benefited 

the industry and the region, and I am certain you will continue to do 

so. You have completed a challenging course of study in your field of engineering. 

You have shown your creativity throughout your time here, 

from when you first started in Foundation on through your senior projects. 

You have used your imagination and knowledge to come up with 

designs to help both industry and society. I am very proud of what you 

have done while you were here and am confident you will continue to 

do great things. 

As new graduates, I encourage you to set professional goals and also to 

continue your education. I encourage you to participate in workshops 

and conferences, to get involved in research projects, and even pursue a 

higher degree. You have met the challenges of a rigorous undergraduate 

engineering program. You have worked extremely hard to get here today. 

As someone who earned degrees in engineering, I recall the challenges I 

met along the way. Think back to when you were a first year student at the 

PI. What did you know about engineering then? Now think about how 

much you have learned since. You now have considerable knowledge 

in your respective fields of study. You have the tools to become lifelong 

learners. You are ready for the next step. Keep learning, keep growing. 

Build on the knowledge you have gained. Stay in touch with the PI. Join 

the Alumni Association. Come back and get a masters degree with us. 

You are essential to our future. 

In closing, I want to say how fortunate you are to belong to the United 

Arab Emirates. We all – all of us here tonight - are fortunate to live in 

this great country, which was founded by His Highness Sheikh Zayed 

Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and that is currently led by His Highness Sheikh 

Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and by His Highness Crown 

Prince General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. We 

are privileged to have these and other far-sighted leaders who have made 

education an absolute priority, and we should be extremely grateful for 

this. I want to say thank you to the PI faculty and staff who have given 

their time, energy and encouragement to these young men along their 

way. And I want to give special thanks to the parents and families of these 

young men. Your support and encouragement have been fundamental to 

their success. I’m sure each young man sitting here realizes how valuable, 

how essential, your guidance has been. 

I would like to remind you of two sayings of Al-Imam ALI (alieh assalam) 

when he said 

There is no treasure like knowledge. But then he added that The knowledge 

which is most useful is what one puts into practice. 

Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2010. I am sincerely 

proud of each of you.

الكرام ، هيئة التدريس واملوظفني ، وخرجيي املعهد البرتولي لعام 2010 و الذين 

هم السبب احلقيقي لوجودنا هنا هذه الليلة ، أرحب بكم يف حفل ختريج املعهد 

البرتولي اخلامس.‏ شكرا لكم مجيعا على حضوركم هنا لالحتفال بإجنازات هذه 

اجملموعة من الشبان املتميزين الذين أثبتوا عن جدارة أنهم على أمت استعداد 

ليكونوا مهندسني.‏ يشرفين أن أكون معكم ، خرجيينا ، هذه الليلة ، وأن أكون مع 

عائالتكم وأعضاء هيئة التدريس ، وكل الذين ساهموا يف مسرية وصولكم هلذه 

النقطة املهمة يف حياتكم.‏ 

يف البداية ، أود أن أحتفي بواحد من ضيوفنا الكرام ، الدكتور جون جولدن الذي 

شغل منصب أول مدير أكادميي للمعهد البرتولي ‏،حيث بدء خدمته يف املعهد 

البرتولي يف عام 2001 ‏،و عمل جبد و اجتهاد على تطوير املعهد البرتولي لتصبح 

كلية اهلندسة الرائدة اليت نراها اليوم.‏ أرحب بالدكتور جولدن.‏ 

أسِ‏ سَ‏ املعهد البرتولي مبهمته اليت تتمثل يف تقديم برامج أكادميية تؤدي إىل 

منح درجات علمية يف جماالت اهلندسة ، لتعزيز خلق املعرفة اليت يستفيد منها 

قطاع النفط والغاز اإلقليمي ، وتوفري فرص التعليم املستمر للمهنيني العاملني يف 

الصناعة النفطية بشكل عام.‏ و حنن ملتزمون متاما بهذه املهمة.‏ وأعتقد أنكم ، 

خرجيي عام ، 2010 مثال ممتاز على كيفية التزامنا خلدمة صناعة النفط ودولة 

اإلمارات العربية املتحدة بشكل عام.‏ 

املعهد البرتولي ال يزال يافعا حيث حنتفل هذا العام أيضا مبرور 10 سنوات علي 

تاسيسه.‏ ولكننا و حني نشملكم ‏،خرجيي 2010 الذين حنن هنا لتكرميكم هذه 

الليلة ، ميكننا و بفخر أن نذكر أن املعهد قد خرج أكثر من 500 من املهندسني 

وعلماء اجليولوجيا البرتولية احلاصلني على درجة البكالوريوس والذين انضموا 

ألدنوك وجمموعة شركاتها.ميثل اإلماراتيون حوالي ٪ 80 منهم.من جهة أخرى 

فقد مت منح أوىل درجات الدراسات العليا لدينا العام املاضي ، والعام القادم نستعد 

لتخريج أول جمموعة من طالباتنا الالتي سيحصلن على درجة البكالوريوس.‏ أتعهد 

كرئيس للمعهد مبواصلة البناء على النجاحات اليت حققناها ، وجعل املعهد البرتولي 

واحدة من كليات اهلندسة الرائدة يف العامل.‏ 

املعهد البرتولي يعمل كمؤسسة تعليمية وكمركز أحباث لصناعة النفط والغازو 

كهيئة رائدة يف البحوث اإلقليمية.‏ و قد شاركتم ، خرجيي عام ، 2010 يف جمال 

البحوث القيمة اليت استفادت منها الصناعة واملنطقة ، وأنا متأكد من أنكم سوف 

تستمرون يف القيام بذلك.‏ لقد أكملتم برامج دراسة متميزة يف جمال عملكم 

يف اهلندسة.‏ لقد أثبتم إبداعكم يف الفرتة اليت قضيتموها هنا ، منذ بدأمت ألول 

مرة يف السنة التأسيسية حتى أنهيتم مشروعات التخرج.‏ وقد استخدمت خيالكم 

ومعرفتكم من أجل التوصل إىل تصميمات ملساعدة كل من الصناعة واجملتمع.‏ أنا 

فخور جدا مبا قمتم به حني كنتم هنا ، وأنا على ثقة من أنكم سوف تستمرون يف 

القيام بأشياء عظيمة.‏ 

كخرجيني جدد أشجعكم على حتديد األهداف املهنية وأيضا ملواصلة التعليم اخلاص 

بكم.‏ أنا أشجعكم على املشاركة يف ورش العمل واملؤمترات ، على املشاركة يف 

املشاريع البحثية ، والسعي لاللتحاق بربامج الدراسات العليا.‏ لقد اجتزمت حتديات 

عديدة الكمال دراستكم اجلامعية يف شتى جماالت اهلندسة.‏ لقد عملتم جبد 

للوصول لغاياتكم,‏ اىل هنا , إلي هذا اليوم اهلام.‏ كحاصل على شهادات يف اهلندسة 

ما زلت أتذكر التحديات اليت القيتها على طول الطريق.‏ فكروا يف وقت كنتم فيه 

طالبا يف السنة األوىل يف املعهد البرتولي.‏ ماذا كنتم تعرفون عن اهلندسة ؟ اآلن 

فكروا فيما قد تعلمتم منذ ذلك احلني.‏ لديكم اآلن معرفة كبرية يف كل احلقول 

الدراسية.‏ لديكم األدوات الالزمة لتحصلوا العلم مدى احلياة.‏ كونوا على استعداد 

الختاذ اخلطوة التالية.‏ احلفاظ على التعلم ، واحلفاظ على النمو.‏ البناء على املعرفة 

املكتسبة.‏ البقاء على االتصال مع املعهد البرتولي.‏ االنضمام اىل مجعية اخلرجيني.‏ 

أو العودة واحلصول على درجة املاجستري معنا.انتم جزء من مستقبلنا.‏ 

ويف اخلتام ، أريدكم أن تستشعروا حظكم العظيم باالنتماء إىل دولة اإلمارات 

العربية املتحدة.‏ حقيقة حنن مجيعا -- كل واحد منا هنا هذه الليلة -- حمظوظون 

للعيش يف هذا البلد العظيم ، اليت أسسها املغفور له بإذن اهلل تعاىل صاحب السمو 

الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان ، واليت يقودها حاليا صاحب السمو الشيخ خليفة 

بن زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان ‏،حفظه اهلل تعاىل و صاحب السمو ولي عهده األمني 

الشيخ حممد بن سلطان بن زايد آل نهيان.‏ و حنن يف غاية االمتنان النهما وكل 

قادة الدولة بعيدي النظر قد جعلوا التعليم أولوية مطلقة ،. أريد أن أقول شكرا 

هليئة تدريس املعهد البرتولي وللموظفني الذين قدموا وقتهم وطاقاتهم و قاموا 

بتشجيع هؤالء الشباب على طول طريقهم.‏ وشكر خاص أوجهه إىل اآلباء وأسر هؤالء 

الشبان حيث كان دعمكم وتشجيعكم أساسيا لنجاحهم.‏ أنا متأكد من أن كل شاب 

جيلس هنا يدرك مدى أهمية توجيهكم و ارشادكم.‏ 

وأود أن أذكركم باثنتني من أقوال اإلمام علي كرم اهلل وجهه عندما قال : 

كُلُّ‏ وِعَ‏ اءٍ‏ يَضِ‏ يقُ‏ مبِ‏ ‏َا جُ‏ عِلَ‏ فِيهِ‏ إال وِعَ‏ اءَ‏ الْعِلْمِ،‏ فَإِنَّهُ‏ يَتَّسِ‏ عُ‏ بِهِ.‏ و العلم خري من املال.‏ 

و قد أكد أيضا على أن العلم احلق هوما ينتفع الناس به.‏ 

التهاني وأطيب التمنيات خلرجيي عام 2010. أنا فخور بإخالص كل منكم.وليكن 

كتاب اهلل يف قلوبكم و اجعلوه منهجكم فكما قال اهلل عز و جل:«‏ وقل اعملوا فسريى 

اهلل عملكم و رسوله و املؤمنون«.‏ صدق اهلل العظيم

Your Excellency, Members of the Petroleum Institute Board, Dr. Ismail 

A. Tag, Distinguished Faculty and Administrators of The Petroleum 

Institute, honored students, ladies and gentlemen. I bring you 

greetings from the Colorado School of Mines. I am honored to be 

here to help celebrate the 10th commencement ceremony of The Petroleum 

Institute of Abu Dhabi. It is wonderful to see the noble dream 

of a world class engineering school to serve the Emirates come to fruition. 

I want to thank H. E. Yousef Omeir Bin Yousef for his kind invitation 

for me and my wife to attend this Commencement Ceremony and be 

a part of this celebration. Additionally, I want to thank His Excellency 

for all of his guidance and support during my time as the first Chief 

Academic Officer of the Petroleum Institute. He was able to provide 

the faculty, the facilities, and the leadership necessary to launch a successful 

program. 

Additionally, I would like to thank Dr. Ismail A. Tag, Senior Vice President 

& Provost for Academic Affairs for supporting this invitation. 

It is appropriate at this time to quickly recognize the contribution of 

a number of people that strongly supported the start up of The Petroleum 

Institute and were particularly helpful to me during my time in 

the Emirates . There were many people that helped me, but I must 

mention several special people. These are: 

Dr. John O. Golden 

Professor Emeritus, Colorado School of Mines 

Dr. Golden received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Vanderbilt 

University and the Ph. D. degree from Iowa State University in Ames, 

Iowa. He has professional experience with Lockheed Missiles and 

Space Company and has completed various consulting assignments. 

The majority of his career was at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) 

where he rose through the professorial ranks in the Chemical and Petroleum 

Refining Engineering Department. Additionally, he served 

CSM as Director of Research Development, Dean of the Graduate 

School, and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. 

In 2001, he was honored to be selected as the first Chief Academic 

Officer of The Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. He remained in this 

position until January, 2006. In May, 2006, Dr. Golden received the 

George R. Brown Medal for Distinguished Service in Engineering 

Education from the Colorado School of Mines. 

Mohamed Zainal - Mohamed Zainal was the fisrt senior officer of the 

PI and served on the committee that did the planning and implementation 

of the P. I. concept. 

Sultan Al Zaabi - Sultan served as the first financial officer of the PI 

and has become a very good friend. He was responsible for keeping 

me out of trouble and helping me adjust to the culture of the Emirates. 

Yousef Al Neami - Yousef managed student affairs and helped me 

understand the background of the young men in the program. 

Kalifa Al Hosaini - Kalifa did much of the planning and implementation 

of the first PI building and saw that the facility was well equipped. 

Mahmoud Shehada - Mahmound solved facility problems and helped 

me understand the culture of country. 

Several people from the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) contributed 

heavily to the beginning of the PI. 

Dr. Nigel Middleton Nigel was the senior CSM administrator involved 

with the PI and now serves on the PI Board. Nigel has always 

been very encouraging in his relationship with me.

فاندربيلت ودرجة الدكتوراه من جامعة والية آيوا يف أميس بوالية أيوا.‏ لديه 

خربة مهنية بشركة الصواريخ ومستلزمات الفضاء لوكهيد و وقام مبهام 

استشارية خمتلفة.‏ وكان غالبية حياته املهنية يف كلية كولورادو للتعدين 

‏)سي إس إم(‏ ، حيث ارتقى من خالل صفوف األستاذية يف اهلندسة 

الكيميائية وتكرير البرتول.‏ باإلضافة إىل ذلك ، شغل منصب املدير األعلى 

لبحوث التنمية ، عميد كلية الدراسات العليا ، ونائب الرئيس للشؤون 

األكادميية وعميد كلية.‏ يف عام ، 2001 مت تكرميه ليتم حتديده بوصفه 

املسؤول األول األكادميي رئيس املعهد البرتولي يف أبو ظيب.‏ وبقي يف هذا

الدكتور ناجيل ميدلتون--‏ كان ناجيل املسؤول من كلية كولورادو للتعدين و 

من كبار املتعاونني مع املعهد البرتولي ويعمل اآلن مبجلس املعهد البرتولي.‏ 

ناجيل كان دائما مشجعا جدا يف عالقته معي.‏ 

مستوى عاملي خلدمة دولة اإلمارات يؤتي مثاره 

الدكتور روبرت بالدوين -- وكان الدكتور بالدوين املهندس املعماري األصلي 

وأود أن أشكر معالي يوسف عمري بن يوسف على دعوته الكرمية لي 

خلطة املعهد البرتولي األكادميية 

ولزوجيت حلضور حفل التخريج هذه ونكون جزءا من هذا االحتفال.‏ باإلضافة 

إىل ذلك ، أود أن أشكر معاليه على قيادته ودعمه خالل فرتة وجودي يف 

منصب الرئيس األكادميي األول للمعهد البرتولي.‏ وكان قادرا على توفري

ومن املناسب يف هذا الوقت لالعرتاف بقيمة مساهمة عدد من الناس الذين

خالل فرتة عملي يف دولة اإلمارات.‏ كان هناك الكثري من الناس اليت ساعدتين

كولورادو للتعدين إىل املعهد البرتولي.‏ 

أعود بالذاكرة اىل السنوات األوىل من املعهد البرتولي ، وأتذكر العديد من 

األوقات اجليدة وعدد من التحديات 

وأذكر أنين أنفقت قدرا كبريا من وقيت يف ختطيط املرافق -- فصول إضافية 

وخمتربات ومرافق رياضية ، وكافترييا جديدة.‏ وأنفق كثريا من وقيت يف بناء 

كلية تنافس مستويات اجلودة العاملية.‏

Dr. Robert M. Baldwin Dr. Baldwin was the original architect of the 

PI academic plan and was the initial Program Director of Chemical 

Engineering. He was outstanding with facility design, equipment 

planning, hiring of faculty and transferring the CSM culture to the PI. 

As I think back to the initial years of the PI, I remember many good 

times and a number of challenges. 

I remember that a great deal of my time was spent in planning facilities 

– additional classrooms and laboratories, athletic facilities, and a 

new cafeteria. Much of my time was spent in building a quality international 

faculty. 

I developed relationships and friendships with a number of the first 

students. I remember the student council meetings where the students 

and administration worked through a number of problems. 

I fondly remember the student boat races and the barbeques on the 

beach. At the Colorado School of Mines, every new student must 

carry a ten pound rock up the mountain close to the campus. This was 

part of the process of becoming a student at the Colorado School of 

Mines. The first administration felt that the PI needed an equivalent 

process. Accordingly, we instituted the boat races for the students in 

their freshman year at the PI. 

I remember the real challenges of trying to build an academic culture 

at the PI similar to the culture at the Colorado School of Mines where 

homework, short quizzes and exams were required on a regular basis 

as opposed to one major final exam. This was a difficult goal with an 

international faculty who had been educated and had worked in a different 

educational systems. 

Sultan Al Zaabi has kept me updated on the professional progress of 

many of the PI’s first graduates and I am delighted with the reports 

coming to me. If the graduates prove to be successful in the industrial 

work setting they reflect pride and honor on the Petroleum Institute. 

I remember the comment of one of the PI’s first graduates, Mohammed 

Ghazzi, when he said, in effect, my father told me, I must succeed. 

My work will reflect what the PI stands for and the first graduates will 

always be examined carefully. My recollection is that Mohammed 

graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and valedictorian of the first 

commencement class. 

It is now appropriate that I offer some advice to the graduates of the 

10th Commencement Ceremony. As you move forward into new activities 

after graduation from the PI, I offer these suggestions: 

1. Work hard, serve your nation well. You have completed a very difficult 

program and have learned what hard work really is. Continue 

the effort. 

2. Continue to learn. Consider additional education. A Masters degree 

in your chosen field or in a different discipline will serve you well 

in the future. Consider a Masters degree in management or business. 

Take advantage of every learning opportunity in your work setting. 

Learn to deal with people in a very positive manner. Manage your 

time well. 

3. Take care of yourself and your families. Be sure you are careful with 

your health and continue to be involved with physical exercise. At 

CSM, students who are graduating usually buy a new car and work 

very hard to get a wife if they were not already married. I do not know 

whether this is true in the Emirates now but I suspect that it is. 

4. Be prepared for international assignments. Accept overseas challenges 

and work on understanding other cultures. Seek overseas 

travel. 

5. Prepare for leadership. Develop your management and people 

skills. 

To the graduating students, I offer one final piece of advice. I have 

found that it has benefited me if I accept every difficult work assignment 

that is presented to me, particularly if no one else wants to take 

that assignment. If you then perform the assignment to the best of 

your ability you will be identified as a high performance person and 

worthy of much honor as Mohammed Ghazzi has been. 

Again, as graduating students, you have completed a very difficult program 

and are now ready to enter the professional world. You and your 

parents should be very proud of your accomplishments. Your faculty 

is proud. Your nation is proud. I wish you the best with your future 

plans.

بنيت عدة صداقات مع عدد من الطالب األول.‏ أتذكر اجتماعات اجمللس 

الطالبي واإلدارة عملت على حل عدد من املشاكل.‏ اتذكر باعتزاز سباقات 

القوارب وحفالت الشواء على الشاطئ.‏ يف كلية كولورادو للتعدين جيب على 

كل طالب جديد أن حيمل صخرة تزن عشرة أرطال حتى قمة اجلبل القريب 

من احلرم اجلامعي.‏ وكان هذا جزءا من عملية التحول إىل طالب يف كلية 

كولورادو للتعدين.‏ ورأت أول ادارة للمعهد البرتولي احلاجة اىل عملية مماثلة.‏ 

تبعا لذلك ، وضعنا سباقات القوارب للطالب اجلدد يف السنة االوىل يف 

املعهد البرتولي 

أتذكر حتديات حقيقية يف حماولة بناء الثقافة األكادميية يف املعهد البرتولي 

لتكون مشابهة للثقافة يف كلية كولورادو للتعدين حيث كان مطلوبا الواجبات 

املنزلية ، واالختبارات القصرية واالمتحانات على أساس منتظم بدال من 

امتحان نهائي واحد.‏ وكان هذا اهلدف صعبا مع أعضاء تدريس من العديد 

اخرتته أو يف ختصص خمتلف خري عون لكم يف املستقبل.‏ النظر للحصول 

على درجة املاجستري يف إدارة األعمال أو االستفادة من كل فرصة للتعلم 

يف وضع عملك.‏ تعلم التعامل مع الناس بطريقة إجيابية للغاية.‏ إدارة وقتك 

بشكل جيد 

3. أن تعتنوا بأنفسكم وعائالتكم.‏ مما ال شك فيه كنت حذرا مع صحتك 

و عليك مواصلة النشاط مع ممارسة الرياضة البدنية.‏ ، والطالب الذين هم 

عادة خترجوا يريدون شراء سيارة جديدة ، والعمل جبد للحصول على زوجة 

إذا مل تكن متزوجا.‏ أنا ال أعرف ما إذا كان هذا صحيحا يف اإلمارات اآلن ، 

ولكن أظن ذلك 

4. تكون على استعداد للقيام مبهام دولية.‏ قبول التحديات والعمل يف 

اخلارج و على فهم الثقافات األخرى

للغاية وحنن اآلن على استعداد للدخول يف احلياة املهنية.‏ جيب عليكم

Distinguished Guests, 

Peace, mercy and blessings of God, 

On behalf of my fellow graduates, I would first like to extend to you 

our sincere thanks and deep gratitude for your patronage and for celebrating 

us on this important day in our lives. 

Today marks the beginning of our careers as we arm ourselves with 

the tools of success presented to us by the Petroleum Institute. We can 

now proceed confidently relying on distinctive academic preparation 

and practical experience. We are honored by being graduates of the 

Petroleum Institute. As students of the Institute, we have experienced 

the extraordinary effort that all members of faculty and administration 

at the Institute exerted to get us to this day and grateful for the care of 

ADNOC and its operating companies. We have received knowledge 

in an atmosphere that clearly rivals what is offered in the best universities 

in the world. We have enjoyed the respect and appreciation of 

everyone that we dealt with during our practical training and while 

participating in the meetings of professional bodies. 

Throughout the course of our study, we have been longing for the 

chance to start repaying our debt to our dear homeland, the UAE. 

However, our debt to the UAE is too great and we will try our best to 

repay some of it. 

We hereby renew our commitment and dedication to the spirit of the 

founder of this great homeland, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan 

and to our Head of State His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al 

Nahyan and his brothers Their Highnesses Supreme Council Members 

and Rulers of the Emirates, the Crown Prince His Highness 

Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. We assure them all that 

we will not hesitate to serve our country and lift its name high and to

The Chemical Engineering 

program at the Petroleum 

Institute provides students 

with a rigorous education 

in the fundamentals of engineering 

and science, and 

specialized training in applications 

of chemical engineering 

in, for instance, 

the oil, gas and polymer industries. 

The program features a summer internship in industry 

which offers students significant exposure to the petroleum processing 

industries in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world. 

Currently, the Chemical Engineering program offers a program 

leading to a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Chemical 

Engineering and, in addition, the program also offers Master 

of Engineering and Master of Science degrees. The field of 

Chemical Engineering deals with the science and engineering 

of chemical reactions, separations, chemical processing and 

product-technology. Accordingly, the degree program begins 

with basic studies in mathematics, physics and chemistry. The 

program continues with courses in basic chemical engineering 

subjects, advanced courses in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, 

mass and heat transfer, and transport phenomena. Studies in 

reactor design, petroleum refining and gas processing are important 

components of the program as is the use of computer-aided 

process design. The program incorporates extensive laboratory 

work and computer process simulation in order to reinforce the 

principles and concepts presented in the classroom.

The Electrical Engineering 

Department at the 

Petroleum Institute is 

student-centered. It offers 

a program that is designed 

to give students a rigorous 

education in the fundamentals 

of electric power, 

control systems, and instrumentation 

as they 

apply to the oil and gas industry as well as the broader energy 

industry. The program features a summer internship in the industry 

where students have a significant exposure to industrial 

work environment and real-world electrical engineering issues 

that complement their educational experience. 

Students in the Electrical Engineering Department at the Petroleum 

Institute gain command of two disciplines; instrumentation 

and control, and power engineering. Typical courses that

The Petroleum Institute offers both Bachelor of Science and 

Master of Engineering degrees in Mechanical Engineering. 

The field of mechanical engineering deals with the science and 

engineering of mechanical devices and processes. Accordingly, 

the degree program begins with basic studies in engineering 

science including statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, 

materials science, robotics and heat transfer.

The Program leads to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum 

Geosciences. Advanced studies leading to the Master of 

Science Degree began in spring 2010. 

Students, who successfully complete the Bachelor of Science 

Program, will be able to enter the petroleum industry as petroleum 

geologists or petroleum geophysicists and have a solid 

educational base if they decide to continue with their graduate 

studies. 

The degree program begins the second year with courses in geological 

and geophysical sciences. Higher level courses include 

Geology of the Middle East, Earth Materials (mineralogy) and 

courses with students studying Petroleum Engineering including 

economics. The program continues with advanced courses 

in Structural Interpretation, Petrology, Petroleum Geophysics, 

Geostatistics, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Rock Properties, 

Petrophysics, Environmental Geology and Reflection Seismology. 

A key component of the program is student’s access to 

advanced laboratories, including computer laboratories where 

the reservoirs can be studied in three dimension using reflection 

seismic and other data in a virtual reality format. This greatly facilitates 

the understanding of the complexities of reservoir stratigraphy 

and relationships between reservoir geology and petroleum 

production. A project course, which typically includes 

the study of problems utilizing real data from UAE reservoirs, is 

offered in the final semester. 


يهدف برنامج علوم اجليولوجيا النفطية يف املعهد البرتولي إىل 

تدريس الطالب أساسيات اجليولوجيا واجليوفيزياء وتدريبهم يف 

جمال تطبيقات العلوم اجليولوجية يف صناعات النفط والغاز.‏ 

ميتاز الربنامج الدراسي مبنحه الطالب رحالت علمية ميدانية 

وتطبيق عملي يف الصيف يف جمال اجليولوجيا.‏ حاليا مينح 

الربنامج درجة البكالوريوس يف علوم اجليولوجيا البرتولية 

ويف ربيع 2010 يبدأ برنامج املاجستري يف علوم اجليولوجيا 

البرتولية ويتم التخطيط حاليا لوضع برنامج مينح درجة الدكتوراه 

يف املستقبل القريب.‏ 

يستطيع خرجيو هذا الربنامج اإللتحاق مبجال الصناعات البرتولية 

لكونه متخصصا يف علوم اجليولوجيا او اجليوفيزياء النفطية.‏ كما 

ميتاز املتخرجون مبتانة دراستهم واستحقاقهم دخول برنامج 

الدراسات العليا.‏ 

يبدأ برنامج علوم اجليولوجيا النفطية يف السنة الثانية 

باملساقات اليت تغطي العناصر األساسية يف علوم اجليولوجيا 

واجليوفيزيائية.‏ تشمل املساقات املتقدمة جيولوجيا منطقة 

الشرق األوسط،‏ ومعادن األرض،‏ ومساقات هندسة البرتول مبا 

يف ذلك االقتصاد.‏ يستمر الربنامج يف تقديم مقررات متقدمة 

يف يف طبقات األرض،‏ و الصخور،‏ والبرتول،‏ واجليوفيزياء،‏ 

وإحصائيات اجليولوجيا،‏ وخصائص الصخور،‏ والفيزياء البرتولية،‏ 

واجليولوجيا البيئية،‏ ودراسة الزالزل.‏ 

متثل املختربات املتقدمة ، مبا يف ذلك خمتربات احلاسوب اآللي 

‏)الكمبيوتر(،‏ جانبا أساسيا يف العملية التعليمية حيث يوجد 

فيها ارشيف املعلومات اليت ميكن دراستها باستخدام التقنيات 

ثالثية االبعاد ومن ضمنها البعد االنعكاس السيزمي وغريها 

من البيانات اليت تشكل الصور االفرتاضية.‏ تساعد هذه الوسائل 

بشكل كبريعلى فهم تعقيدات الطبقات املخزونة والعالقات بني 

جيولوجيا املكامن النفطية واالنتاج.‏ يقوم الطالب يف فصل 

التخرج مبشروع حبثي يقوم علي استخدام البيانات احلقيقية

Graduate studies at PI were 

launched in fall 2007 with 

the offering of a Master of 

Engineering (M.Eng.) degree 

in the four Engineering 

disciplines (Chemical, 

Electrical, Mechanical and 

Petroleum Engineering). In 

fall 2009, PI introduced the 

Dr. Ioannis Economou, 

Master of Science (M.Sc.) 

Associate Provost of Graduate Studies 

and Professor 

degree in the four engineering 

disciplines and in Petroleum Geosciences. In 2009, the first 

M.Eng. degrees were awarded. Furthermore, today PI hosts a 

number of PhD students that spend an initial period at PI and 

then move to one of PI’s United States partner universities for 

the core part of their PhD work. It is our goal that in the near 

future PI will offer a PhD degree. Over the last three years, the 

number of graduate students rose sharply from 39 in fall 2007 

to 143 in fall 2010. Our graduate student population is quite 

diverse: Students from 25 different countries are at PI today. An 

important qualitative change is that in 2007 all of our graduate 

students were part-time while today 60 % are full-time and the

مع طرح درجة املاجستري يف اهلندسة يف ختصصات اهلندسة 

األربعة ‏)الكيميائية والكهربائية وامليكانيكية وهندسة البرتول(.‏ يف 

خريف عام 2009، قدم املعهد البرتولي درجة ماجستري العلوم 

يف التخصصات اهلندسية األربعة و أيضا يف العلوم اجليولوجية 

البرتولية.‏ مت منح أول درجة ماجستري يف اهلندسة يف عام 

2009. وعالوة على ذلك،‏ يستضيف املعهد البرتولي حاليا عددا 

من طالب الدكتوراه اليت يقضون فرتة أولية يف املعهد البرتولي 

ومن ثم يتم انتقاهلم اىل إحدى اجلامعات الشريكة للمعهد 

البرتولي يف الواليات املتحدة الكمال عمل و أحباث الدكتوراه.‏ 

هدفنا هوأن يوفر املعهد البرتولي درجة الدكتوراه بالكامل يف 

املستقبل القريب.‏ على مدى السنوات الثالث املاضية ، ارتفع 

عدد طالب الدراسات العليا حبدة من 39 يف خريف 2007 

إىل 143 يف خريف 2010. هذا و لدينا جمموعة متنوعة جدا 

من طالب الدراسات العليا:‏ فهناك طالب من 25 دولة خمتلفة 

يف املعهد البرتولي اليوم.‏ التغري النوعي املثري هو أنه يف عام 

2007 كان مجيع طالبنا يف الدراسات العليا يدرسون بدوام
