Several members staff delivered papers at professional international conferences, including the Charleston Acquisitions Conference, the Association of College & Research Libraries, the American International Consortium of Libraries and the National Association of Writers in Education. Rowena Aquino was awarded an online course scholarship from the American Library Association and Vanessa Middleton was awarded a Harvard Leadership Institute Scholarship. Library website with the result that the number of graduate student research consultations was higher than any in any previous year. ADNOC operating companies’ research groups were offered extensive training workshops to instruct their own researchers in the effective use of critical resources. Engagement of Innovative Technologies The PI Library is committed to innovative technologies to improve access to information. This year, Library staff selected the integrated library management system (ILMS) called Symphony which was smoothly implemented through cooperation between the vendor and the PI’s IT team. The new ILMS will significantly improve access to materials through its selfservice features and better links to resources. Our goal this academic year was to provide seamless and efficient access to our thousands of e-resources. Summon provides a Google-like experience for our students who –like many beginners in academic research – are uncertain of their approach to scholarly journals. Summon has increased the use of a variety of scholarly journals and faculty feedback indicates that it has improved the standard of scholarly resources that students exploit in their research papers. Awareness Raising Another goal was to promote the Library & ILC’s resources to the PI Community and beyond. We made tremendous efforts to publicize the library as an essential part of students’ academic life, and to emphasize the importance of research skills. Every month over 900 students, faculty and staff visit our three locations and we are open for service over 64 hours per week including weekends. This year we made it easier for Arzanah students to use the Habshan Library. Information Services Empowering the PI community to navigate the information landscape was critical for the Library this academic year. A major accomplishment was the redesign of the 86
A year of transformation, growth and success The Library has sponsored events such as the Spring Book Fair, author visits and community field trips to local exhibitions. Janet Olearski and Vanessa Middleton provide support to the Write On Writers Group, the Arts Club and Las Senoras Book Club. This year two of the Writers Group’s members were prize winners in The Emirates Literature Festival. Vanessa Middleton supported two students’ conference papers and presentations at The World Petroleum Congress which won 3rd Prize for the Best Student Paper. The Library continues to develop their READ campaign and this year we featured industry leaders as role models to promote reading among students. Current Learning Initiatives The Library and Independent Learning Center (ILC)’s primary function is to provide access to information that supports the curricular and research needs of students, faculty, administration and staff and we put the strongest emphasis on learning opportunities through new initiatives. We work closely with Communications, Freshman Success Seminar, Islamic Studies and Senior Design and over 500 students have benefited from our Information Literacy curriculum, designed to ensure that students can effectively navigate the information landscape. The ILC’s particular mission is to provide contentsubject and language-learning opportunities to support users’ coursework, project work and research. The Center has a track record in helping students to develop as independent learners who can identify their own learning needs. It hosts Bu Hasa’s Writing Center (managed by Communications) as well as the Math Learning Support Center, the Physics Tutoring Program, and the Chemistry Learning Center. IV. Future Plans/Initiatives Over the next academic year we plan to introduce learning spaces to all the PI’s facilities and to establish a repository for the PI’s institutional documents, its archive and its graduates’ digital theses. The PI Library will also participate in the launch of the eFADA Library Consortium which is supported by Ankabut, the UAE’s National Research Education Network. 87
