The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 the successful applicants were contacted to continue their admissions procedure (scholarship contract signing, occupational health check and clearance form). Applications received through last three years Year Applicants Increase 2009 504 - 2010 616 22% 2011 672 33% Orientation Fall 2011 The orientation procedures for new students in the Fall 2011 semester involved a mixture of receptions, presentations, placement tests and fun activities to provide a warm welcome to the PI. Before the orientation began, new students (374 male and 95 female students) were personally welcomed by the Provost, the Dean of Engineering, the Director of Student Affairs and the Director of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). ID cards and locker keys were distributed and outdoor activities such as outings to Zayed Sport City, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Saadiyat Island and Ferrari World were arranged. Placement tests, campus tours and meetings with students and faculty completed the orientation program. Approved applicants through last three years Year Admitted Increase 2009 328 - 2010 500 52% 2011 567 73% Early Admissions 2012 Early Admissions were held this year (14th April to 3rd May, with an extension to 10th May) in order to attract high caliber Emirati students in their last year of high school. Applications required a minimum of 80% in Science and Maths tests in the high school students’ preceding semester to qualify for a place in the PI. Faculty members accompany the school visits to present program details and answer academic queries while the Admissions team explains the admission requirements and procedure. Exhibitions, Campus Visits and Conferences Contacts with potential applicants and schools are also established during exhibitions which are an effective tool for recruitment.
