Dr. Mohammed Ali spent one semester at the
University of Oxford, UK, working on “Seismic
Wave Attenuation in Carbonate Reservoirs”
and a “Microseismic Feasibility Study”.
The department hosted an intensive course
on “Remote Sensing for Earth Sciences
Applications and GIS”. The three-week
course introduced students to remote
sensing principles using satellite data and
software. It was sponsored by the Japanese
Oil Development Company (JODCO), with a
multi-national team of instructors from Tokyo,
Imperial College, London and University
Campinas, Sao Paulo.
A team sent by the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology (ABET) visited
the department for verification of a selfstudy
report. The program received neither
weaknesses nor concerns.
Graduate student Amena Al Harethi spent two
weeks at the Department of Geology, Pavia
University, Italy for training in fluid inclusion
analyses and cathode-luminescence and
fluorescence imaging techniques in diagenesis
studies.

Summary of the project: The main objective
of this work is to carry out a feasibility study to
clearly articulate the purpose of the monitoring
work, evaluate array design options and assess
the probability of success of a microseismic
monitoring project.
