The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012
Other Activities
Dr. Mohammed Ali spent one semester at the
University of Oxford, UK, working on “Seismic
Wave Attenuation in Carbonate Reservoirs”
and a “Microseismic Feasibility Study”.
The department hosted an intensive course
on “Remote Sensing for Earth Sciences
Applications and GIS”. The three-week
course introduced students to remote
sensing principles using satellite data and
software. It was sponsored by the Japanese
Oil Development Company (JODCO), with a
multi-national team of instructors from Tokyo,
Imperial College, London and University
Campinas, Sao Paulo.
A team sent by the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology (ABET) visited
the department for verification of a selfstudy
report. The program received neither
weaknesses nor concerns.
Graduate student Amena Al Harethi spent two
weeks at the Department of Geology, Pavia
University, Italy for training in fluid inclusion
analyses and cathode-luminescence and
fluorescence imaging techniques in diagenesis
studies.
Research Achievements
Sponsored Projects
Research activities by Petroleum Geosciences
faculty are reflected in our involvement
in a large number of sponsored projects
summarized below.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Mohammed Ali
Project Title: Microseismic Feasibility Study
Name of sponsor: ADNOC Upstream Research
Oil-Subcommittee
Team members: Mohammed Ali
Duration: 1 year
Amount awarded: USD145,000 (2012)
Summary of the project: The main objective
of this work is to carry out a feasibility study to
clearly articulate the purpose of the monitoring
work, evaluate array design options and assess
the probability of success of a microseismic
monitoring project.
Project Title: Seismic Wave Attenuation in
Carbonate Reservoirs
Name of sponsor: ADNOC Upstream Research
Oil-Subcommittee
Team members: Dr. Mohammed Ali and Dr.
Sandra Vega
Duration: 3 years
Amount awarded: USD355,705 (2012)
Summary of the project: The project focuses
on the estimation of seismic wave attenuation
within carbonate reservoirs in Abu Dhabi
to better understand the factors that affect
seismic attenuation in these reservoirs.
Principal investigator: Dr. Sadoon Morad
Project Title: Impact of Diagenesis on Reservoir
Quality Evolution of Fractured Simsima
Carbonate Reservoir (Upper Cretaceous),
Onshore Abu Dhabi
Name of sponsor: ADCO
Team members: Dr. Sadoon Morad
Dr. Ihsan Al-Aasm
Umer Farooq (M.Sc. student, PI)
Duration: May 2012-March 2013
Amount awarded: USD 245,000
Summary of the project: The reservoir quality
of carbonate rocks of the Upper Cretaceous
