The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012
Awards
October 2010: Dr. Shawket Ghedan was
awarded Outstanding Technical Editor citation
at the SPE International’s Annual Technical
Conference and Exhibition in Florence. Dr.
Ghedan has been an award winning SPE
member at regional and international levels.
Department is now following a curriculum that
requires 138 credit hours for graduation.
Our PE design courses were revamped in the
last academic year partly because of ABET
requirements and also to provide a significant
design experience for our students. The
number of seats has been restricted to just
four per section to ensure the full participation
of students. In line with ABET requirements,
the content had been changed to remove any
research component and to expose students
to real design problems that include realistic
constrain’s and decision-taking. The design
courses combine the different aspects of
petroleum engineering knowledge covered
during their studies and also includes economic
analysis.
June 2012: Mr. Mohamad Yousef Alklih and
Mr. Adnan Aboud Al Marri, senior petroleum
engineering undergraduates, won the 3rd
place in the 3rd SPE Young Professionals Paper
Contest held in Abu Dhabi. Their competition
was based on a research paper entitled
“Stimulation of Tight Sandstone Reservoir
for Improved Water Injectivity” (supervised
by Dr. Bisweswar Ghosh). The contest allows
young professionals to share their research,
ideas, innovations and case studies and by
winning third place, the PI students qualified
to compete in the GCC Young Professionals
Paper Contest in Kuwait.
In Fall 2011 we introduced further risk and
uncertainty topics which are covered at the
beginning of the semester so that students
are better prepared to learn core petroleum
engineering topics. There is also more
emphasis put on statistics components.
We had three technical electives in Fall 2011
and three in Spring 2012. In addition, there
is also a new PE technical elective PEEG493,
Special Topics in PE – Well Treatment that
began in Fall 2012.
Mr. Mohamad Alklih with Mr. Arafat AlYafei
(SPE-AD Chairman), Dr. Hemanta Sarma
(Head of PI PED) and Dr. Ali AlSumaiti
(Assistant Professor, PI PED)
