Dr. C. Rodrigues published the fifth edition of his
book; Dr. P. Rodgers edited the proceedings of
the 12th International Conference on Thermal,
Mechanical and Multi-Physics Simulation and
Experiments in Micro-Electronics and Micro-
Systems and Dr. R. Simmons edited six issues
of the Journal of System Safety. ME faculty
members published a total 42 journal and 33
conference articles.
II. Department Vision and
Mission
Vision
The Mechanical Engineering Department at
the Petroleum Institute will be internationally
renowned for mechanical engineering
education and research relevant to the
petroleum and energy industries.
Mission
To support the advancement of the petroleum
and energy industries in the United Arab
Emirates through excellence in education and
research in the field of mechanical engineering.
III. Highlights for Academic
Year 2011 – 12
New Faculty
Dr. Fahad Almaskari joined the Mechanical
Engineering
department as
Assistant Professor in
2011. He completed
his Master’s and PhD
program in Mechanical
Engineering at
the University of
Manchester in 2004 and 2010 respectively. His
research focuses on improving the modeling
capability of damage in composite structures.
His interests lie in the area of solid mechanics.
Dr. Fahrettin Ozturk also joined the Mechanical
Engineering
department as
Associate Professor
in 2011. He received
his PhD in 2002
at the Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute,
Troy, NY, USA. His research focuses on the
mechanical properties of materials, the
formability of sheet metals, lightweight
materials, and finite element simulations.
Dr. Tamer Shahin joined the Petroleum
Institute in 2012 as an
Associate Professor.
Dr. Shahin was one of
the youngest students
to be admitted into
University College
London’s Mechanical
engineering program
at sixteen years old. He obtained his PhD from
Brunel University in the field of Computer
Aided Design and he co-founded the
International Engineering Design Conference
series. His research interests lie in engineering
design methodology, productivity, innovation,
and computer aided design.
IV. Mechanical Engineering
Events
Female Student Activities
Mechanical Engineering female students have
been involved in a number of different activities
outside of the classroom. Each semester, we
organize informal faculty-student gatherings
as well as meetings to address the questions
of prospective ME students currently enrolled
in the Advanced University Preparation (AUP)
department. During the last academic year ME
students visited the GASCO plant in Ruwais,
