IV. Current Initiatives
Student Retention Initiatives
Arts and Sciences provides a number of
services intended to enhance student
retention, from delivering more studentcentered,
active-learning courses to providing
academic support services through the
Chemistry Learning Center (CLC), Physics
Tutorial Program (PTP), Mathematics Learning
Support Center (MSLC) and the Writing
Center. In addition, this year A&S initiated the
Academic Intervention and Mentorship (AIM)
program to provide additional advising and
mentorship to academically at-risk students.
Service and Outreach
Arts and Sciences faculty have been involved
in a number of service and outreach activities
during the Academic Year 2011-12. The major
activities are:

Year 12 and 13 Chemistry students from
the British School Al Khubairat (BSAK)
visited the PI Organic Chemistry labs and
shadowed PI students

German-Emirati Cultural Evening

V. Summary and Future Plans
The Arts and Sciences Program plays a key
role in preparing engineering students for
their engineering studies and their career as
a professional engineer. The courses offered
develop understanding of fundamental
science, mathematics and engineering
concepts while also cultivating professional
skills such as teamwork, problem solving,
leadership, communication, and critical and
creative thinking. In addition, A&S courses
provide insights into global issues and the
impacts of engineering on society in the 21st
century.
