The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 The Masters of Science in Applied Chemistry degree program received initial accreditation from the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Several new graduate electives were also introduced: Technical and Scientific Writing (Communications), Mathematical Modeling in Engineering (Mathematics), and Organometallic Chemistry: Homogenous Catalysis (Chemistry). Collaborative Endeavors The A&S Department of Mathematics continued working together with the Engineering programs to offer several advanced mathematics courses. The Mathematics, Communications, Chemistry, and Physics programs all collaborated with their respective AUP counterparts on a cohesive set of vertically integrated student learning outcomes and to establish clear means of appropriately placing students. The STEPS program (Engineering Design), conducted a review of STPS201 and STPS251 courses with participation from the engineering programs in order to integrate the learning outcomes of these courses with the senior design sequence. A&S departments also engaged in several collaborative efforts with entities outside of PI. The German program continued collaborations with the Goethe-Institute Gulf Region, the German Embassy, and the Dubaibased German magazine Discover ME. As part of these collaborative efforts, Arts and Sciences students participated in a roundtable discussion with the German Federal President, Dr. Christian Wulff. Internationally, the General Studies program organized the 4th International Design Competition and Forum in collaboration with the Colorado School of Mines. Sponsored Research Arts and Sciences faculty were involved in 17 sponsored research projects (detailed in Table 2), delivered 34 conference presentations, including several keynote and plenary talks, and produced nearly 60 publications during 2011-12 (Table 1).
