I. Executive Summary
Since January 2012 extensive work has been
carried out to construct a new Research
and Development (R&D) organization at
the Petroleum Institute. We have identified
key ‘surface’ and ‘subsurface’ technical and
educational challenges at ADNOC and the PI
and used them to guide our new direction.
The key enabler for the success of R&D at the
PI is the rapid development and deployment
of the Carbonate Enhanced Oil Recovery
(EOR) Centre of Excellence which will add
tremendous technological and economic
value to the whole of Abu Dhabi both in terms
of (a) Oil & Gas production, sustainability
and reserves growth and (b) the creation of
knowledge-based economic growth for the
future of the UAE.
The following is a summary of our 2012
activities:

Identify Key ADNOC and PI Challenges used
to define the R&D direction for the new PI
R&D organization. The challenges include
the following:

A support strategy for ADNOC and its group
of companies in order to secure:
o Production sustainability well beyond
2020
o An ultimate recovery factor of 70% (a
1% increase in recovery amounts to
USD100 billion of revenue or higher)
o The preservation of hydrocarbon gases
for power generation
o Suitable personnel resources to manage
future large scale ADNOC projects
