The Petroleum Institute | Annual Report - Academic Year 2011 - 2012 Over 30 PI students participated in the 40th National Day sports tournament organized by Takreer. After winning the indoor and outdoor football competitions, and being placed second and third in the bowling and volleyball competitions respectively, the PI team was declared the overall winner. The PI football team built a winning record of 6-2-1 in 2011-12. Our footballers beat teams from Khawrizmi Institute, Masdar Institute, Sharjah University and DGAS. In the Spring mid-semester break 2 groups of Petroleum Institute students (1 male, 1 female, accompanied by faculty members) flew to Malaysia for 7 days. The trip included a visit to Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) at Bandar Seri Iskandar. The second PI Global Day involved all areas of the campus in celebrating different cultures. The festival highlighted the history, music, dance, art and food of 22 countries and cultures. A campaign to raise awareness of children with special needs was initiated by a group of students who visited the Al Noor center for children with special needs. Thirty children from the center were invited to the PI campus for a Fun Day. The children were treated to puppet, clown and pirate acts, they played games and they sang. All the acts were performed by PI students and over AED 8,500 was raised for the center. The PI’s ‘Athletes of the Year’ are Ibrahim Elhasan and Abdelkader Filali who were honored at a ceremony held at Zayed University This year, the average daily number of students who use the fitness facility in ASAB exceeded 80, an all-time high. Other activities organized by the Recreation Department included: Holy Quran competition, Trips to Musandan, PS3 Tournaments, Survival Camps, Weekly Movie Trips, Go carting, Paintball, Bowling, Beach BBQ, Diba Trip, Know your Country (Trips to different Emirates) and Trips to the Ladies Club in Dubai. In addition to its traditional services, this year the department also introduced swimming and martial arts classes. Recreation The Recreation Department provides a safe and inclusive recreation environment where PI students can exercise, learn, and develop skills to succeed at the PI and beyond. 112

Executive Summary The Petroleum Institute’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program is proud of its accomplishments given its short history and is pleased to highlight the following for the academic year 2011-2012: in SPE regional and international student competitions. • WISE Program’s Academic Integrity Week initiative receives best practice recognition from Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research – Commission for Academic Accreditation. • The first 60 undergraduate female engineers and scientists participate in the 6th Commencement (January 2012). • Two alumnae begin graduate studies at prestigious universities (MIT and University of Minnesota); one is accepted at Stanford and Purdue Universities, and one at Cornell University. • Two alumnae complete research fellowships at NASA’s Ames Center in California. • WISE senior Petroleum Engineering students secure second and third places 113
