Our aim is to be effective in encouraging a continuous improvement in academic programs, in academic and student support services and in administrative services. has been renamed ‘Institutional Research & Studies’. This structural change meant that web services were transferred to the IT department. • The position of ‘Head of Institutional Research & Assessment’ has been renamed the ‘Director of Institutional Research & Studies’. • Our operational efficiency has been enhanced by the addition of two coordinator positions. The administrative assistant was promoted to one of these new positions. • Survey and reporting requests were automated through the Helpdesk system. Data Collection & Reporting to External Entities IRS is the focal point for collecting and reporting institutional data to internal and external bodies. Below is a list of reports submitted by IRS: Our activities in relation to accreditation & licensure ensure that all programs and degrees offered at the PI are licensed by the Commission of Academic Accreditation (CAA), the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research, UAE & by ABET (formerly known as ‘The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology’). III. Highlights of Academic Year 2011- 2012 New Employees: • Ms. Mouza Al Neyadi – IR Coordinator • Mr. Ussama Jano – Office Administrator Changes: • In the reorganization of the PI, the Office of ‘Institutional Research & Assessment’ 1. CHEDS Reports: 242 data points about faculty, staff, students, finance and institutional information in Fall 2011 & Spring 2012 semesters 2. Presidential Affairs’ Housing & Educational Allowance Report: salary, housing & educational entitlement and the actual amount being paid to each employee based on nationality, gender, grade and number of children, etc. 3. Executive Council Higher Education Report: 60 data points elaborating enrollment, graduation, faculty details and accreditation 4. Executive Council Manpower Report: Manpower survey of existing jobs by classification and nationality for 2011; training & development plan & budget, plus general information [the number of employees in each grade & by nationality 104
A year of transformation, growth and success (in 2010 & 2011), the educational level at each grade, employee retention for 2010 & 2011, new vacancies & new hires for 2012], organizational structure & HR strategy (5-year plan), the recruitment plan for 2012 and a budget forecast. 5. ADEC Higher Education Survey: Faculty & staff summary, faculty roster, programs, new intakes & graduations (from 2000 to 2010), student enrolment & retention by program, student life (internship & exchange program), finances, patents and general information (regarding the library, PI alumni, accreditation, etc) 6. Executive Council Employee Profiles: The PI’s personnel profiles with employees’ photographs according to a template detailing name, gender, past experience and skills. 7. Presidential Affairs’ Standardized Form for Scholarship & Grants: 23 data points about scholarship, GPA and academic progress for all currently enrolled students. as well as the facilitation of the CAA review teams’ visits and follow-up reports on teams’ suggestions and recommendations. Collaborations IRS actively participates in the Middle East & North Africa Association of Institutional Research & Assessment (MENA-AIR)’s meetings, workshops and conferences. The efforts of the CAA and the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research on quality assurance and changes to the standards are supported (and have been adopted) by IRS. Revisiting Student Evaluation of the Learning Environment During the past year, the Director of IRS revisited the existing process for the annual survey: ‘Student Evaluation of the Learning Environment’. Each program nominated a faculty member for the evaluation taskforce which reviewed various evaluation forms and compared them with the PI’s own form. After discussion, IRS developed the new “Course Instructor Evaluation” form which is now effective. Accreditation Activities IRS successfully coordinated the initial accreditation of two new graduate programs, Master of Engineering in HSE and Master of Science in Applied Chemistry. This involved the review and submission of self-study reports Surveys & Reports IRS administered 45 web-based surveys for various departments within the PI. These surveys and their statistical analysis in the form of reports provide the PI management with accurate information and they support the PI’s institutional effectiveness. The following reports are compiled by IRS for benchmarking and external comparison purposes: • Abu Dhabi Cost of Living: A report on the increasing cost of living in the Abu Dhabi Emirate over the previous 12 months. • Academic Salaries: The salaries of 105
