The pr<strong>of</strong>iteers from <strong>the</strong> drug trade included William, Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Shelburne, who organized Britain's first Intelligence<br />

Service, whose agents were drawn from Britain's leading<br />

families. Its chairman was George Baring, and it<br />

employed Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, and Thomas<br />

Malthus. The Geneva headquarters was run by <strong>the</strong><br />

Mallet Prevost family, whose descendants include Allen<br />

Dulles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CIA.<br />

Basil Lubbock's work, "The Opium Clippers", 1933, lists<br />

<strong>the</strong> principal owners <strong>of</strong> British vessels engaged in <strong>the</strong><br />

opium trade, with color illustrations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir flags. Most <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m were ex-slavers. No. 1 was Hon. East India Co.<br />

(known to <strong>the</strong> Chinese as Hon John Co.); 2. Jardine<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>son; 3. Dent & Co.; 4. Pybus Bros.; 5. Russel &<br />

Co.; 6. Cama Bros.; 7. Duchess <strong>of</strong> Atholl; 8. Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Balcarras; 9. George IV; 10. Prince Regent; 11. Marquis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Camden; 12. Lady Melville.<br />

On Feb. 1, 1927, <strong>the</strong> New York Times noted <strong>the</strong> passing<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sir Robert Jardine, "<strong>the</strong> son and heir <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Sir<br />

Robert Jardine, and succeeded his fa<strong>the</strong>r as <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong><br />

Jardine Mathieson & Co. Hong Kong which for a long<br />

time held almost a monopoly in <strong>the</strong> importation <strong>of</strong> Indian<br />

opium into China." Sir Robert had inherited $20 million<br />

and 20,000 acres in Scotland. Dr. William Jardine had<br />

settled in Canton in 1819.<br />
