Astor family: Viscount Astor, Hon. F.D.L. Astor, M.L.<br />

Astor, and H.J.J. Astor, <strong>the</strong> latter being chairman <strong>of</strong> The<br />

Times and director <strong>of</strong> Hambros Bank.<br />

The first President <strong>of</strong> RIIA was Lt. Col. R.W. Leonard,<br />

president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Coniagas Mines. The Lord Patron was<br />

Her Majesty <strong>the</strong> Queen. All Prime Ministers and Viceroys<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colonies since 1923 have been Honorary<br />

Presidents <strong>of</strong> RIIA. Stephen King Hall, in his definitive<br />

work, "Chatham House," says: "The Prince <strong>of</strong> Wales<br />

graciously accepted <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Visitor. This<br />

appointment secured that <strong>the</strong> Institute could never be<br />

perverted to party or propaganda purposes." [Right! --ed]
