Although <strong>the</strong> war was going well for those who had<br />

promoted it, hostilities were ended somewhat abruptly by<br />

<strong>the</strong> unforeseen intervention <strong>of</strong> an aide to <strong>the</strong> Czar <strong>of</strong><br />

Russia, Maj. Gen. Count Cherep-Spiridovich, who says:<br />

"I had a long discussion with Gen. McDonough, Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> War Intelligence<br />

Dept. in London; I submitted on Sept. 1, 1918 a report advising him peace<br />

with Bulgaria would provoke an uprising in Slavic Austria, panic in Germany<br />

and surrender <strong>of</strong> her armies; my advice was accepted; two weeks later<br />

peace was signed with Bulgaria, two weeks later Austria was out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war,<br />

two weeks later Germany surrendered."<br />

L.L. Strauss <strong>of</strong> Kuhn, Loeb Co. states he was one <strong>of</strong> four<br />

American delegates who conferred with <strong>the</strong> Germans at<br />

Brussels in March 1919 on <strong>the</strong> final armistice. On Nov.<br />

11, 1918, <strong>the</strong> New York Times headlined, "REDS GRIP<br />

ON GERMANY: Königsberg, Frankfurt-on-Main,<br />

Strassburg now controlled by Spartacist Soviets". On<br />

Nov. 12, 1918, <strong>the</strong> New York Times stated, "The<br />

revolution in Germany is today, to all intents and<br />

purposes, an ac<strong>com</strong>plished fact."<br />

On <strong>the</strong> same day, <strong>the</strong> New York Times headlined,<br />

"Splendor Reigns Again; Jewels Ablaze". The occasion<br />

was a gala evening at <strong>the</strong> Metropolitan Opera, with<br />

Caruso and Homer signing Samson and Delilah.<br />

Attending were <strong>the</strong> Otto Kahns with <strong>the</strong> French Consul-<br />

General; <strong>the</strong> George F. Bakers and his sister Mrs.<br />

Goadby Loew; Cornelius Vanderbilt and his daughters;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Whitneys, <strong>the</strong> J.P. Morgans, and <strong>the</strong> E.T.<br />

Stotesburys; <strong>the</strong> Fricks; Mrs. Bernard Baruch -- her<br />

husband was in Europe on important business; Mrs.<br />

Adolf Ladenburg. These celebrants were also <strong>the</strong>
