Baron Julius de Reuter, founder <strong>of</strong> Reuter's, to handle<br />

foreign remittances without <strong>the</strong>ir being subjected to any<br />

accounting. He was succeeded by Sir Roderick Jones,<br />

who says in his autobiography, "Shortly after I<br />

succeeded Baron Herbert de Reuter in 1915, it so<br />

happened that I received an invitation from Mr. Alfred<br />

Rothschild, <strong>the</strong>n head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British House <strong>of</strong> Rothschild,<br />

to lunch with him in historic New Court, in <strong>the</strong> City."<br />

Jones prudently refrains from telling us what was<br />

discussed at this meeting.<br />

Only one member <strong>of</strong> Congress voted against <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />

declaration <strong>of</strong> war against Germany in World War I,<br />

Jeanette Rankin. She was also <strong>the</strong> only member <strong>of</strong><br />

Congress to vote against our entry into World War II.<br />

Opponents <strong>of</strong> Wilson's action were <strong>of</strong>ten beaten and<br />

imprisoned. Eugene Debs was sentenced to a long<br />

prison term. Congressman Charles Lindbergh [Sr.] ran<br />

for Governor <strong>of</strong> Minnesota on a platform opposing our<br />

participation in <strong>the</strong> war. The New York Times regularly<br />

ran scathing denunciations <strong>of</strong> his campaign. On June 9,<br />

1918, it noted, "Rep. Clarence H. Miller denounced<br />

Lindbergh and <strong>the</strong> Non Partisan League as seditious.<br />

'According to Mr. Lindbergh <strong>the</strong> Liberty Loan is an<br />

instrument devised by <strong>the</strong> money sharks. It seems<br />

inexcusable that any person allowed to be at large in <strong>the</strong><br />

United States could entertain or epxress such a view <strong>of</strong><br />

this.'" Harrison Salisbury <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New York Times states:
