who was under orders from <strong>the</strong> British Treasury to<br />

dispatch gold to <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Wellington, grouping to stop<br />

Napoleon. After Waterloo, <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> gold dropped.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> twentieth century, <strong>the</strong> most important name at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> England was Lord Montagu Norman. His<br />

grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, George Warde Norman, had been governor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> England from 1821-1872, longer than any<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r man; his o<strong>the</strong>r grandfa<strong>the</strong>r, Lord Collet, was<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> England from 1887-89, and<br />

managing partner <strong>of</strong> Brown Shipley Co. in London for<br />

twenty-five years.<br />

In 1894, Montague Norman was sent to New York to<br />

work in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> Brown Bro<strong>the</strong>rs; he was befriended<br />

by <strong>the</strong> W.A. Delano family, and lived with <strong>the</strong> Markoe<br />

family, partners <strong>of</strong> Brown Bros. In 1907, Norman was<br />

elected to <strong>the</strong> Court <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> England. In 1912, he<br />

had a severe nervous breakdown, and was treated by<br />

[Carl] Jung in Switzerland. He became deputy governor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> England in 1916, and later served until<br />

1944 as Governor. The Wall Street Journal wrote <strong>of</strong> him<br />

in 1927:<br />

"Mr. M. Collet Norman, <strong>the</strong> Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> England, is now head<br />

and shoulders above all o<strong>the</strong>r British bankers. No o<strong>the</strong>r British banker has<br />

ever been as independent and supreme in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> British finance as Mr.<br />

Norman is today. He has just been elected Governor for <strong>the</strong> eighth year in<br />

succession. Before <strong>the</strong> war, no Governor was allowed to hold <strong>of</strong>fice for more<br />

than two years; but Mr. Norman has broken all precedents. He runs his Bank<br />

and his Treasury as well. He appears to have no associations except his
