power, is a direct descendant <strong>of</strong> King William, including<br />

Queen Juliana <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands; Margaretha, Queen <strong>of</strong><br />

Denmark; Olaf V <strong>of</strong> Norway; Gustaf <strong>of</strong> Sweden;<br />

Constantine <strong>of</strong> Greece; Prince Rainier <strong>of</strong> Monaco; and<br />

Jean, Grand Duke <strong>of</strong> Luxembourg, whose son married<br />

<strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> C. Douglas Dillon.<br />

Lord Shrewsbury (Charles Talbot) had been given places<br />

Bishop <strong>of</strong> London, had been removed by James II; he<br />

signed <strong>the</strong> invitation to William to <strong>com</strong>e to England; he<br />

was reinstated in his see in 1688; his son Francis<br />

became Lord Privy Seal.<br />

John Churchill, first Duke <strong>of</strong> Marlborough, had entered<br />

into negotiations with <strong>the</strong> Prince <strong>of</strong> Orange in Oct. 1687,<br />

and expressed his readiness to support him in Aug.<br />

1688. To allay James II's suspicions, Marlborough <strong>the</strong>n<br />

signed a renewed oath <strong>of</strong> fidelity to him Nov. 10, 1688.
