Alsberg, also educated at University <strong>of</strong> Berlin, worked for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dept. <strong>of</strong> Agriculture; and Dr. Joseph Stancliffe Davis,<br />

a Harvard pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> economics.<br />

The advisory <strong>com</strong>mittee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original Hoover Library<br />

consisted <strong>of</strong> Dr. James R. Angell, president <strong>of</strong> Yale, and<br />

president Carnegie Corp.; Dr. J.C. Merriam, educated at<br />

<strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Munich, chmn Natl Research Council,<br />

and Carnegie Institution; Herbert Hoover; and Julius H.<br />

Barnes.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Adams was Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hoover Library 1920-25.<br />

He was succeeded by Ralph H. Lutz, who headed <strong>the</strong><br />

library from 1925-44. Lutz had served on <strong>the</strong> Supreme<br />

Economic Council, Paris under Bernard Baruch 1918-19.<br />

In 1910 he received a Ph.D from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />

Heidelberg. He had taken his undergraduate degree<br />

from Stanford 1906. He had served as vice chmn Hoover<br />

Library under Adams 1920-25.<br />

Harold H. Fisher was director Hoover Library 1944-52.<br />

He had been deputy director <strong>of</strong> American Relief<br />

Administration and its chief historian under Hoover 1920-<br />

24. He was pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> history at Stanford Univ. from<br />

1933 on, be<strong>com</strong>ing emeritus in 1955, director <strong>of</strong><br />

Hoover's Belgian American Educational Foundation<br />

1943-64, and chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pacific Council <strong>of</strong> IPR<br />

1953-61 during <strong>the</strong> period when <strong>the</strong> FBI arrested a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> IPR executives and charged <strong>the</strong>m with<br />

espionage. While chairman <strong>of</strong> IPR, Fisher continued to<br />

give his mailing address as Hoover Institution, Stanford
