generally thought to be conservative, but on examining<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir personnel and directors, we find <strong>the</strong> same old<br />

international crowd <strong>of</strong> Bolsheviks and financiers.<br />

The Hoover Institution was founded at Stanford<br />

University, Palo Alto, Calif. in 1919 with a donation <strong>of</strong><br />

$50,000 from Herbert Hoover. He had been a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first graduating class at Stanford, founded with a<br />

bequest from Leland Stanford, <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Pacific<br />

railroad tycoon. His only son, Leland Stanford Jr. died in<br />

a hotel room in Florence, Italy at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> fifteen. His<br />

grieving mo<strong>the</strong>r became <strong>the</strong> prey <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong><br />

spiritualists, one <strong>of</strong> whom persuaded her to start a<br />

spiritualist university, founded on such mystical Eastern<br />

teachings, as "The balance between night and day is <strong>the</strong><br />

balance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world", and "The mainspring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

movement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world". "Life and death is <strong>the</strong> great<br />

secret <strong>of</strong> immortality."<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> difficulty <strong>of</strong> organizing <strong>the</strong>se doctrines<br />

into a coherent academic curriculum, Mrs. Stanford was<br />

dissuaded from <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> a "spiritualist" university, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> present Stanford University <strong>the</strong>n came into being.<br />

Reputedly "conservative", it has in fact been dominated<br />

by Harvard Liberals for many years.<br />

Herbert Hoover founded <strong>the</strong> Hoover Institution at <strong>the</strong><br />

suggestion <strong>of</strong> three men, Andrew Dickson White, Daniel<br />

Coit Gilman, and Ray Lyman Wilbur, president <strong>of</strong>
