Working as a Soviet mole, Philby was financed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Schroder Bank in 1934 to publish a pro-Hitler magazine<br />

him to Spain to cover <strong>the</strong> Civil War. He took as his<br />

Salamanca palace became his Spanish headquarters.<br />

The daughter <strong>of</strong> a Canadian banker, Doble lavishly<br />

entertained <strong>the</strong> Falangist leaders. Philby Frequently met<br />

General Franco <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Philby was recruited for <strong>the</strong> British SIS in 1940. In 1942,<br />

he helped Norman Holmes Pearson, a Yale pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

who specialized in <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> Ezra Pound, to set up <strong>the</strong><br />

London <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> OSS with Charles Hambro, chief <strong>of</strong><br />

SOE. In 1949, Philby was sent to Washington as SIS<br />

liaison <strong>of</strong>ficer with <strong>the</strong> CIA and FBI. J. Edgar Hoover<br />

frequently lunched at Harvey's Restaurant with Philby<br />

and James Angleton <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CIA. While CIA station chief<br />

in Rome, Angleton worked closely with <strong>the</strong> Zionist<br />

terrorists Teddy Kollek and Jacob Meridor, and later<br />

became chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Israeli desk at <strong>the</strong> CIA, helping<br />

Philby to set up <strong>the</strong> lavishly funded international Mossad<br />

espionage operation, all paid for by American taxpayers.<br />

A senior CIA security <strong>of</strong>ficial, C. Edward Petty, later<br />

reported that Angleton might be a Soviet penetration
