Col. Stewart Menzies, head <strong>of</strong> Secret Intelligence Service (SIS)<br />

An ancestor <strong>of</strong> Col. Menzies had been a notorious<br />

Jacobite double agent during <strong>the</strong> last days <strong>of</strong> James II's<br />

reign. The present Menzies was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Lady Holford;<br />

he married Lady Sackville, daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 8th Earl de la<br />

Warre, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sackville-West family which owned historic<br />

Knole. Second, he married Pamela Beckett, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

J. Rupert Beckett, chmn <strong>of</strong> Westminster Bank, now<br />

National Westminster Bank, one <strong>of</strong> England's Big Five.<br />

Menzies' mo<strong>the</strong>r-in-law was <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Lord<br />

Berkeley Paget, Marquess <strong>of</strong> Anglesey. Menzies'<br />

daughter married Lord Edward Hay, Marquess <strong>of</strong><br />

Tweedsdale, Earl <strong>of</strong> Kinoull, related to Countess <strong>of</strong> Errol.<br />

The present Sir Peter Menzies is a director <strong>of</strong> National<br />

Westminster Bank, treasurer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> giant Imperial<br />

Chemical Industries, and director <strong>of</strong> Commercial Union<br />

Assurance Co. In <strong>the</strong> British Who's Who, 1950, Col.<br />

Menzies noted that he had been appointed "C", head <strong>of</strong><br />

MI6 from 1939-51, but in later editions, he omitted this<br />

information.<br />

Ford states in his "Acknowledgements":<br />

"Lord Mountbatten <strong>of</strong> Burma was a close personal friend <strong>of</strong> Donovan as one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Chief <strong>of</strong> Staff Committee which helped<br />

Donovan in <strong>the</strong> formation and operation <strong>of</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Strategic Services."<br />

The "American" secret service was never anything but a<br />

British operation, directed at all levels by representatives<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Crown. OSS agents received advanced<br />

training for <strong>the</strong> European <strong>the</strong>ater at Bletchley Park,
