Dillon was Ambassador to France 1953-57, later became<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treasury. He was chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Rockefeller Foundation from 1971-75, <strong>the</strong>n chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Brookings Institution. To organize his estate, he sold<br />

Dillon Read to <strong>the</strong> Bechtel Corp. He is considered to be<br />

one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ten wealthiest men in <strong>the</strong> U.S. and one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

three most powerful.<br />

THE W ARBURGS AND KUHN, LOEB CO.<br />

Second to <strong>the</strong> Rothschilds, <strong>the</strong> Warburgs were<br />

considered <strong>the</strong> most important international banking<br />

family <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 19th and 20th centuries. In 1798, two sons<br />

<strong>of</strong> Marcus Gumprich Warburg, Moses Marcus [Warburg]<br />

and Gerson W. [Warburg] founded M.M. Warburg Co. in<br />

Hamburg.<br />

They were descendants <strong>of</strong> Simon von Cassel, a 16th<br />

century moneylender and pawnbroker. They were also<br />

direct descendants <strong>of</strong> Abraham del Banco, largest<br />

banker in Venice. When <strong>the</strong>y moved north, <strong>the</strong>y took <strong>the</strong><br />

name <strong>of</strong> Warburg, after Cassel settled in this<br />

Westphalian town. In 1814, <strong>the</strong> Warburgs became one <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first affiliates <strong>of</strong> N.M. Rothschild <strong>of</strong> London. They<br />

were related to <strong>the</strong> leading banking families <strong>of</strong> Europe,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Rosenbergs <strong>of</strong> Kiev, <strong>the</strong> Gunzburgs in St.<br />

Petersburg, <strong>the</strong> Oppenheims and Goldschmidts in<br />

Germany. Moritz Warburg was apprenticed to <strong>the</strong><br />

Rothschilds in Italy and Paris, and later married Charlotte<br />

Oppenheim, whose family were diamond merchants in<br />

Frankfort.
